The most interesting runner today by far is Yellow Star in the 1.06 at Newbury. It’s a two-mile hands-and-heels apprentice race on soft ground. This trip is going to take some getting — for the jockeys, not the horses.

Toby Moore has had two spins for Charlie Appleby this month, and I suspect his dad won’t have had this race as an afterthought. Whether you bet the horse or not, this will be well worth a watch to see what talent he has, because it’s a perfect opportunity to show it.

Will the handicapper drop the horse a stone now? If so, paying the fine would turn out to be a much cheaper way of dropping down the handicap than sending the horse out for several more runs.
