TV coverage

Mick Fitz's jockey angles are hardly astute (he dismissed the big Ffos Las winner as Choc Thornton wasn't riding, for example), and his lack of analysis to go with his C4 tips suggest strongly that they aren't even his selections. Is he still fronting up someone else's tipping service? Jim McGrath seems to get a bit miffed at Mick's approach which is to identify the favourite and tip it, mention that he also really likes the second favourite, and simply describe the silks of any other horse he's asked about. It makes Alan Shearer look a genius, and surely can't last.

Whoever chose Fitzgerald for C4, knew what they were getting. He was hardly too good for ATR. Can only guess his Henderson connections were seen as important. Maybe the better than sex comment....certainly not for analysis.

Have to say yesterday, coming down to the second last, Third Intention looked like vindicating John Francome's bullish opinion of the horse outlined pre-Feltham. Would like to have him still broadcasting.

So, are we to dismiss every angle you don't make a profit on? :)

it wasn't ME..that couldn't make a profit yer dilly..the selections didn't show one..i followed all the big handicaps for a few years noting when a jockey rode at his minimum weight..THEY didn't show a profit.

in fact f00k it..yes i'm a clueless dick that doesn't know the time of day..sorry for posting:)

I've probably looked at that no more than 20 - 30 times in the past. Those occasions will mainly have been during a 4 - 6 week period, which I think was after hearing someone on the TV waffling on about it's significance in the late 90's. Can't say I noticed anything, but at the same time I wouldn't call it a negative and is more than likely a very small positive. I just don't think it worth the hassle of looking, as it wouldn't influence my decision to bet or not.

"this might be a daft question..but anyway..can jockeys hear the racecourse commentary during the race?..so if the commentator said it was a steady pace they would know to move nearer to it etc?"

I was wondering about that a few weeks ago, EC. I thought the noise of them galloping would probably muffle any audio around the stands, especially when they're on the far side. Don't know though, as I've never even ridden a horse, never mind being in a group of them, so not sure how noisy it is in there.

Maybe when the commentator keeps mentioning a steady pace, he's backed a hold up performer. :)

when was the last fatal fall at the last that you can remember on a channel 4 race where they decided to show it unedited?

Its clear they went out of their way to avoid showing the last fence. Had they shown the race live, they wouldnt or couldnt have avoided it.

It happened again yesterday. When Theatre Guide's fall at the last in the novice chase looked like it might be fatal they only showed the duel on the run-in between Grandioso and Molotof. Once Theatre Guide was up on his feet they were happy to show the last fence action, including the fall. It's clearly policy.

RUK were pretty much the same .

Watching the ML today. Worried that Alice is about to mount Jeremy Kyle. Turning off now, let me know what happens in the end.

I watched the Channel 4 coverage of Chelt on Tues and Wed - and (I know Im easily pleased, but even so) I really enjoyed it. Everyone seems FAR more relaxed than they used to.

Tuesday and Wednesday I watched it on the tele and Thursday and Friday I was there. The CH4 coverage I thought was pants to be honest: horses are in the paddock, Rishi is outside a bar talking to whoever, Mick is talking to a starter in the paddock and trying to be tough, someone is talking to a jockey in the weighing room......you never get to see the horses. And then when you are actually at the course they ruin it as well . The winner takes far too long to come in, then the presentations are drawn out, then there's an interview in the winner's enclosure not always shown perhaps, but meantime the horses for the next race are coming in and restricted to walking round only 3/4 of the paddock. By the time CH4 get out of the way, the bell goes for jockeys to mount and a lot of them were getting on outside the weighing room and going straight out. The paddock is packed with people, you can't see the horses as they walk round far side to where you are standing, and then they disappear before they come round with the jockeys.

Horses arriving late in the parade ring is a particular bugbear of mine, and it goes on just as much in Ireland as it does at Cheltenham. Some stables are much worse for it than others and they should be made to clean up their act. It's especially not fair in races for inexperienced horses if some get to do just a half lap of the ring and others have been exposed to the crowd and the build-up for ten minutes and more. And it's not fair to those enthusiasts and punters who pay their entrance money in order to see the horses up close.
