Re Twitter:

I've made it a personal mission of mine to highlight to all and sundry O2 customers and potential customers in Ireland a very serious issue concerning that carrier and Twitter.

A couple of months ago O2 made a policy decision to discontinue the routing of Twitter SMS's. As a result, you cannot access Twitter or receive tweets via SMS (text). O2 will only facilitate web-based Twitter data transfer via WiFi or GPRS (3G).
This is scandalous ........... and something should be done about it. But the watchdog authority in this country is a toothless tiger. Twitter has become an essential communication tool, and yet O2 won't forward Twitter feeds to you via SMS.

Here's the thing; I have a super-duper, rinky-dinky, top-'o-the-range Samsung GalaxyS smartphone on contract to O2, and I cannot receive Twitter SMS with it; I have had to go and buy a Vodaphone PAYG cheapie to enable me to collect my tweets. Carrying around two phones at all times is stupid, but I have to do it if I want to keep up with bookmaker enhanced offers that are exclusive to Twitter.

I'm bloody angry about this ! I contacted O2 cust-serv but got no satisfaction. I raised hell on their own O2 forum, and I have sent a formal complaint to Comreg. (In my opinion, O2 are in breach of agreement/contract ............. when I contracted with them a long time ago Twitter SMS was available, now they have arbitrarily suspended that facility yet I am still paying the original contract fees).

Anyone thinking of signing to O2 should really re-consider in the light of their non-relay of Twitter SMS's.

Apologies for the rant, but on the very rare occasion a particular issue raises my passions to a fiery level.

When you say you want to keep up with bookmaker offers, how is this effected by not receiving texts? I thought the text messages would only include tweets that you're mentioned in?

Hi Slim,
No mate, you can receive the tweets of anyone that you "follow" -- be they individuals or companies/organisations.
You then tick "turn on mobile notifications" to get the tweet(s) sent by SMS (text) directly to your phone.
At the present moment I only have such "allows" for two sources -- PaddyPower and Betvictor -- otherwise you would be overwhelmed with tweets; your phone would be ringing non-stop.
I need Paddy and Vic direct to my phone because they are the only two making those ultra sweet enhancements exclusive to Twitter (usually one offer a day). A recent one was MCFC v Wolves at Evens .............. 1.24 on Betfair .

Why are you using SMS for Twitter? Bad data coverage?
Instant notifications. :)
If using Wifi, one doesn't get informed there is a new tweet unless you log into Twitter itself and check all the tweets in your timeline. Paddy's enhancements, for instance, only last for five minutes on average before they are pulled -- you need instant notification when the offer is made ............... if checking on Twitter via Web you'll miss 'em.

Should have added too, Gareth, that my contract isn't inclusive of data transfer, I don't require it since I have landline broadband at home. To access t'internet away from home on my smartphone I connect via Wifi in a WiFi-enabled pub or suchlike. If I am out of of range of such a WiFi hotspot I am dependent on SMS to receive the bookie SMS's.
My contract is for a certain amount of free call-minutes per month and unlimited texts -- yet O2 won't forward my Twitter texts.

Fair enough - my iPhone's Twitter client gives me a notification when I get a mention, but I can't say I've tested to see just how instant it is.

Yes, when you get a mention ................ but will it notify you when there is a general tweet sent out by, say, PaddyPower ? No. :)

Right - but there are clients available that support that. Its just a case of whether the notifications are sufficiently quick vs the SMS service.

Apologies for the double post above. :o

Gareth, this is all very well ......................

But if I'm out of range of a WiFi hotspot? I then cannot access twitter dot com.
And SMS becomes the only mechanism whereby I can receive my tweet.

Look fella's, I'm sorry if I seem to be making a "big issue" out of this.
Honestly, I only put it up originally as a forewarning to anyone who might be considering O2 as a service provider that there is a matter of non-availability of Twitter sms's to be considered before signing the dotted line of a contract.

I'm on O2 as well.

This might explain why Jessica Alba stopped texting me. There was me thinking it might have been something I had said...

Those with a bloodstock (or general racing in fact) interest should follow @Hugoshair - Hugo Merry's twitter alter ego..

"He's a nice type and the ultimate aim is the champion bumper. Saeed will pre-train until I'm ready for him" J Ferguson on the 500k colt
- this is the sort of gem that pops up

That was one of the funniest tweets I've seen on Twitter.
