What are you watching

BBC4 have are showing lots of Thomas Hardy documentaries and adaptations which will keep me occupied for a while, especially as I’m avoiding all news programmes ( and probably will continue to do so for the next 4 years). I haven’t seen The Mayor of Casterbridge or Wessex Tales before so will watch them before bracing myself to rewatch Tess of the d’Urbevilles which I absolutely love even though I well up just thinking about it. I used to live in Boscastle in my hippie days and used to walk along the Valency Valley where Hardy met his first wife, Emma and I used to imagine them walking there.

I'm watching a documentary called Hitler's Gold. Just listened to a description of him saying he voiced his opinions as if they were incontrovertible truth.

Sounds like a good percentage of people on here (and the internet in general)!! 😁

Had a near disaster tonight. A nice black and white Christmassy film called Holiday Affair starring Robert Mitchum was on the tv. I flicked to another channel momentarily but then couldn’t find the film and I was going to crash out on the sofa and watch it. Thankfully found it on catchup. Still not sure what channel it’s actually on. In my new life of not watching the news because it’s so awful I’m going to start watching Christmas films early. Especially black and white ones.

Plenty of cheesey Christmas films available from August onwards these days, on the dedicated Sky channels. Channel 5 start their own festive countdown from October onwards. I’ll starting watching from 1 December.

The Outlaws on BBCiplayer is worth a look

Also Long Strange Trip on Prime which is a six parter on The Grateful Dead (RIP Phil)
It's a small world I just got in touch with Mary and Matthew Kelly last night. Matthew played with the dead several times on stage and on one of their albums. He formed Kingfish with Bob Weir and Ratdog....told me a few years his album Sundown on the Forest sold over a million copies but when I suggested he must have made a pretty penny he said no way it all went up the Grateful Deads mangement's noses. They should have been called the wild bunch

I am so bored trying to find something really good to watch. I did watch Jack Ryan movie with Kevin Costner and Chris Pine which was excellent but now I am struggling.......I action/spy type movies or TV series if anyone knows of any???

New series of SAS Rogue Heroes is starting soon on the BBC.

Living in Thailand I had never heard of it till now Moe
I found the full first tv series on Capt. Jack Sparrow's Island🤑

Downloading it now sounds exactly what I was looking for thanks

Jack O’Connell is a local lad made good. He was ( probably still is) patron of our local indie cinema so I’ve always followed his career closely. I assume he will be in the second series. If I remember right, when I watched the first series there was a documentary about them too which was actually as good as the series but I can’t remember what it was called. They were a fascinating group of people! I watched the documentary several times because there was so much to take in. Jack was in a film called, I think, Unbroken which was based on a true story. But it came out at the same time as a less gritty Colin Firth prisoner of war film which got more publicity so was largely ignored. It was based on a book by Laura Hillenbrand who wrote Seabiscuit. But unlike Seabiscuit I found it a hard read and gave up on it. The film was good, though.

Watched The Westerner again this afternoon. Superb stuff with Gary Cooper and Walter Brennan (as Judge Roy Bean) both in brilliant form.

For those who might not have known, Cooper's character is called Cole Harden, as in the son of Westerner who was a smart staying hurdler a few seasons back.

And Mrs O is watching Wolf Hall so I'm in the cave watching Sleepless in Seattle again. Haven't watched it for at least a year.

I followed Cole Harden in his Stayers year as we saw him at Wetherby on Charlie Hall Day.( similar thing happened with Iris’s Gift although that kicked off at Bangor and ended at Punchestown). I got to watch Holiday Affair on catchup which was quite good ( I’ve never really watched Robert Mitchum films) but it had weird ending. I’m loving Wolf Hall and have discovered an excellent BBC podcast called History Extra which isn’t as dry as In Our Time or as light as The Rest is History. It had a very informative episode which explained how Cromwell fell from grace so quickly. It seems there are 2,000 previous episodes so that should keep me occupied for a while.

I’m also watching my newly installed smart meter monitor. Bloomin’ scary. Even with me freezing cold and unplugging everything ( I read that even when switched off anything plugged in uses electricity) I’m using £6 worth of energy a day. And that’s also with me having cake for breakfast and salad sandwiches for my other meals. Heaven help me when I need to do some washing…I’ve been told that, after a few days most people stop looking at it. Which is what I intended to do right from the start but it was strangely fascinating and just drew me in…

We tend to use £3 - £4 a day

Wow! I've missed this thread. LOL

I've just finished watching "Temple" on Netflix (two seasons) - it was pretty good - a bit
unplausible at times, but entertaining.

If you're into family crime drama, I'd recommend "Bloodline" on Netflix - an engrossing plot twist fest with some absolutely brilliant acting. It's worthy of a second watch.

I also just finished Brian Cox's Solar System series. What an awesome production! Besides the jaw-dropping special effects, it was refreshingly cerebral with some brilliant explanations on physics and the cosmos. Even I learned something. lol :p

Our house is coming up for three years old and has a smart meter (for electricity, not gas) but it's in a cupboard so I've never looked at it. The house came with large solar panels and obviously a number of things are on all day (fridge, freezers, TV, some lamps, fireglow, etc) so we know that there will be charges (plus the standing charges) but we're still only about £400 a year for electricity.

I’ve been watching Brian Cox but, even though he explains everything in simple terms for non scientific people like me I still can’t understand anything he’s talking about. I just don’t get how people can work out what happened millions of years ago. I struggle with understanding what I did yesterday.

It’s now telling me that I have to do a tutorial. It’s like being back at school. Going to make my self a cup of coffee and be prepared to take notes….

Started watching Until I Kill You but had to stop part way through episode two as I was getting too scared. It didn’t help that, thanks to my smart meter, I’ve stopped having the landing light on at night. So I watched the documentary about Delia to find out what happened. I’ll finish off the series tomorrow in daylight. The landing light will be staying on from now on.

It’s excellent although my mother has decided she can’t watch Morse anymore in case he shows up! Superb acting by both and while Anna Maxwell Martin got a lot of criticism for her accent, when you watch the documentary on Delia, you can see she was pretty close.

It’s one of those stories that, if it were fictional you’d say how that couldn’t possibly happen in real life. I think that British crime drama has improved massively ever since The Killing was on BBC4 (followed by The Bridge which was even better) and it had to try to be as good. I don’t usually watch murder stuff so it takes something really good to draw me in. I’ve liked Maxwell Martin ever since I saw her in Bleak House ( which I must rewatch; I was gripped by it given that it was a Dickens story that I didn’t know).
