Just watched Gallopin Des Champ who won like you would expect but he'll need to improve his jumping next year......looked really awkward at the last

Tom Segal:

Novices have an outstanding record in the best handicap chases, as Noble Yeats proved at Aintree earlier in the month, and they have a great record in the BoyleSports Irish Grand National Chase at Fairyhouse (5.00) too.

Consequently, it is not surprise to see the Brown Advisory third Gaillard Du Mesnil at the top of the market and given that he finished hot on the heels of Ahoy Senor at Cheltenham, he could be extremely well handicapped off a mark of 154.

The step up to a marathon trip shouldn't pose a problem and he is the one to beat, but he hasn't won a race over fences and at the prices I would rather suggest Velvet Elvis for Thomas Gibney, who won this race with longshot Lion Na Bearnai back in 2012.

Velvet Elvis is only a six-year-old but that hasn't stopped Burrows Saint and Organisedconfusion winning the race in recent years and he's barely put a foot wrong in his opening four starts over fences.

He chased home some top novices over trips way too short on his first three runs and then hacked up in a competitive handicap at Navan when stepped up to 3m last time.

The extra distance was clearly a huge help to him and I like the fact that he tends to race prominently, which is always a big help in this race. Hopefully the forecast rain will arrive to take the sting out of the ground but even if it doesn't, Velvet Elvis looks primed to run a career personal best by quite some way.

The JP McManus owned pair of Ten Ten and especially Early Doors look to have been targeted at the race and should run well but the other horse I like the look of is Noel Meade's novice Lieutenant Command.

He beat one of the favourites, Max Flamingo, at this track giving him 7lb on his chase debut and he will be receiving 9lb here if you take Eoin Walsh's claim into account. That day Lieutenant Command jumped like an old hand and after a couple of poor runs on heavy ground against Bob Olinger and Master McShee, he was in front when unseating his rider at the second last in a competitive Grade B Handicap at Naas in February.

This ground should be perfect given that his half-brother stayed extremely well and if he gets into a rhythm near the front, Lieutenant Command could be as well handicapped as anything in the race.

I was struggling for a valid reason not to have something on Fakir D'Alene, so good to see you have a high rating for him, DO.

I respect GDM's chance - though I missed the price advised by Slim - and his form certainly stacks-up (154 is fair enough, I'd say). He also has a reasonable chance of getting the trip, being by Saint Des Saints (broodmare has only had one other runner).

Mount Ida

Has to be a better proposition going right-handed...

Frontal Assualt for the F/C

I have no strong fancy for anything in the race.

My approach is no more than trying to get some value on a spread of contenders so I've 'done' quite a few of them.

Mount Ida carries sickness insurance because I had money on her in both the Mares' Chase and Grand National. Likewise Farclas because he was definitely a long-range fancy for Aintree.

Fakir d’Alene seems to come out on or near the top of every system I use ( and there are many!). And I’ve had to back Samcro even though I can’t make a case for him. It saddens me when a horse touted for greatness in it’s early career never quite makes the grade. Not that the horse is aware of it but I kind of want them to win something that will give them immortality.

GDM
Mister Fogpatches - has run some big races this year and 6th in Kim Muir was sound.
Smoking Gun - seems to love the course.
Interesting, too, that Robbie Power is on Jonjo’s (JP’sj Time to Get Up.

I don't think Samcro runs.

Well, I've had another look at this impossible race and it looks like I'm following the Gigginstown route.

The final three for me are:

Farclas.
Well handicapped with RWF and looks certain to appreciate the trip. Missed the National, where he ran well last year, for this.

Run Wild Fred.
It's my opinion that Stattler is a Gold Cup horse for next season and if so then RWF could be well in here.

Frontal Assault
Breeding suggests that the trip will suit and I wonder why connections have been running over 2.4 ish when that is always going to be too short

Anyway, I never get the winner of this race and wouldn't be in any way confident of breaking that trend here.

Fun guessing, though lol.

Good luck

Odds on in running in both Nationals for ******* fortunes. Christ what do I need to do.

Off you go 25s
Velvet elvis 25/1.....6th
Time to get up 25/1
Frontal assault 33/1 2nd
Streets of doyen 66/1...NR
Mister fogpatches 20/1

If Velvet elvis wins I will put on my blue suede shoes on get all shook up.its now or never.

Better than normal in this race.2 good places.

Well done to DO. The winner had a lovely low weight and had never fallen.

I find as I get older I have less enthusiasm for studying all the form of these type of 30 runner races.

Years ago I actually enjoyed it.

Now I am like 'christ do I really have to do this'.

I think I will pack in my own form study and just follow DO and Outsider blindly from here on in!

The bigger the race the bigger the buzz for me. I thoroughly enjoy getting stuck into these big handicaps. To be honest, I get a wee bit deflated if I end up strongly fancying something at a single-figure price because I want the time and effort to be rewarded with a winner at a big price.

So often these longshots end up just getting a place, and that's okay, but when they come in the buzz is bigger for me than the financial reward. But I wouldn't put anything up on here unless I had already backed it or fully intended to.

Anyone know if Ronald Pump is ok?

Been to Wolverhampton races today and have just watched the recording, looked a bad fall

I can also confirm that Gaillard Du Memsil 14/1 punters are being administered high doses of cider.
