The Cheltenham Festival 2025

I don't know about everyone else, but it's the only thing on my mind (apart from the National (lol)).

I don't think I have ever been so excited by Cheltenham. Well maybe there was one year 1988, my sister's boyfriend Trevor took me. I will try and keep this story short, but I think it's worth telling. I was on the dole when Trevor paid for me to go, and we stopped off for a drink in Cheltenham before going to the course. We sat at a table with Irish race goers, the guy next to me was busy studying his RP. I asked him if he had any tips, he gave me a selection for each race.

Kribensis 6/1
Certain Light 9/1
Charter Party 10/1
Aquilifer 9/2

I could not remember his other two selections, so I don't know if he tipped these two.

Private Views 7/1
Cashew King 9/1

Nethertheless it goes without saying, I was able to pay Trevor back 😃. If only I had done a 4 fold bet on those first 4 🤔 😁.
I backed Private Views -he turned into a total psycho after that race.

I was born and grew up in a post-war council scheme 3-bed semi just north of Clydebank. The immediate area was called Goldenhill but really only the local primary school, the park (where the Antonine Wall remains are located) and the pub are known by that name. To us it was always [the] Hardgate (pronounced locally 'The Hargit') and I went to school in Duntocher (home of the famous Duntocher Hibs, for whom Pat Crerand played before moving to Celtic) so when people ask me where I'm from I usually say Duntocher (locally 'o' as in 'fore' and 'ch' as in loch, although my old man always insisted the 'o' should be pronounced as in 'for'). His family on his mother's side was original Duntocher stock, his father from 2nd generation Irish immigrant stock who came during the famine via Toxteth. I think his father may have been born there. My dad always insisted I was 1/8 English. I think that was to annoy me.

Moved to EK when I got married and came to Strathaven in 1996 after fluking the purchase of a self-build plot which allowed us to build this on teachers' wages. (It's actually a photo of the Jag taken when I was selling it but it gives you an idea about the house.) I have other photos of the house on file somewhere but can't locate them right now.)

He was trained by Nick Gaselee? He ran up a sequence of wins and looked very good then started to refuse to race? I’m pretty sure he had a physical issue and broke down which was probably a reason for the refusing to race as before he’d looked a serious horse.

Fairly sure it was Nick Gaselee who trained him. He definitely started a race at Lingfield sometime in the 1980s and then refused to go round the tight left-hand bend after the stands.

Well it had to come Brighterdaysahead already confirmed for the Champion Hurdle.
I had her in a few of my accies all NRNB...so I cashed them out and replaced her with Lossiemouth NRNB which increases all my returns on those accies if she wins

He looked like a serious machine when winning the Cathcart. The following season he started to sulk in races -getting hopelessly tailed off before sometimes running on from impossible positions.I think he was killed at the following seasons festival.

Yeah I think IIRC he had a physical problem which resulted in a fatality. I'm a big believer that horses that are winning well like he was, don't just suddenly become dogs. He had a reason for not wanting to run and that was born out by his injury?

Are they really going tun Fact to File in the Ryanair - surely he must run in the GC ? JP has Spillane ‘s Tower who has a much better chance IMO of winning the Ryanair than Corbetts Cross does of winning the GC - it’s looking like a good to soft meeting for once . You cannot be afraid of one horse . Though I am hoping it is ground that suits Banbridge as I suspect this splendidly versatile horse would give GDC a race on goodish ground .

I always have suspected there must have been something physical with Bregawn.
Possibly -After winning the Gold Cup he had a spell with Paddy Mullins and managed to win a two mile flat race for Qualified Riders at Listowel.Maybe jumping fences was hurting him -I think he also ran in the zSweeps Hurdle for Paddy.

Hi Andross, my view regarding the Gold Cup, is that a horse ideally needs both pace and stamina. Having both attributes is rare, hence when a horse has both they can win this race on a number of occasions providing they stay fit. Galopin Des Champs is such a horse, but I don't think this year there is another. Most the fancied horses are doubtful stayers of 3 1/2 miles, perhaps Corbet Cross will get the distance but I think his lack of pace will mean he is too far behind. I can't see an upset unless the fences get in the way or the ground becomes heavy. I also have not got a clue who will finish 2nd. I can see why trainers might choose the Gold Cup, but I don't think it's because they think they can win it, but because the Ryanair looks like being more competitive.

The chances of Fact to File going Gold Cup are slim.to none.
Willie Mullins hasn't even considered it since Gallopin kicked him into touch.
He would have to be crazy to let them clash at the Festival it simply is not going to happen

I’ve been listening to a few previews over the last couple of days. Haven’t been giving them my full attention ( and have to admit that, with so many of the fancied horses being Irish I can’t picture many of them). But one thing did stick in my mind. Someone ( not sure who) said that, brilliant as Brighterdaysahead has been she had ‘cocked her jaw’ in a couple of races. Can anyone tell me if they’ve seen her do that and would it put anyone off backing her?

She's 8 from 9 her one defeat came at Cheltenham in the Mares Novice when she was beat fair and square with no sign of her cocking her jaw.
Her recent win in the Hotel Hurdle could just have been one of those flukes never to be repeated again.
I am not convinced by her as a superstar cocked jaw or no cocked jaw. The Champion Hurdle is about whether Constitution Hill is as good as he was or not...Not about her.

There’s a great new Paddy Power video doing the rounds on Facebook atm. With Connor Moore doing impressions of trainers. If anyone can post it on here, it’s very good.

Willie Mullins talking about his chances next week.

Hi Simmo, they have been repeating these stable tours on Sky mix which is free on my virgin media tv. The mullins conversation was what I hoped, except for Kiss Will, who I had presumed would be running in the Supreme, but Mullins said they had not made their mind up (3 weeks ago). Kiss Will is 20/1 for both the Supreme and Turner's, does anyone know or have an opinion on which race ?

Agree regarding Banbridge and decent ground.
