2016 Gold Cuppin

True, fair play. He probably ran to a similar mark than in the RSA.

I think the small field really helped the winner. He wasn't crowded and got into a rhythm. I have no strong feelings about 2017 renewal but would be against him in a bigger field.

I'd like to be a fly on the wall of the GC debrief between Ruby, Willie and Rich Ricci.

So, would Vautour have beaten Don Cossack?

Did Brennan rush him into the fence a little too much? I really like him as a jockey but was just initial impression

pity of it is that we will never know. Can't see cc being at his best at 11.

but main thing is he's fine.

My initial thought was yes he did. Couldn't understand why he didn't wait till after jumping that fence before pushing the button given that it is a notorious fence.

agree Dave although it looked a bit different side on. He's not always the smoothest of jumpers and you would have thought perhaps he needed more steadying before that fence which as you say, is tricky

what's done is done

Again, give the horse a chance. Imagine DC, SM or Djak been held up. Hoe would have they fared if ridden from the back

He would have fallen in a hole had he tried to lay up. Certainly wouldn't have been 3rd.

We all get it wrong, don't sweat it.

reminded me strongly of the gold cup bobs worth won. all the top horses in the market (bar DP) came to the fore 3 out and one fell so we will always have the what if question. sadly i'm not sure CC will get another crack at it in this kind of shape being a 10 year old now.

Well to be fair that's easy to say in hindsight. But I think to be fair from your posts you gave DP a squeak!! You had him bang there in mist of your analysis!! I'd have liked the horse to be ridden as he has been in all of his chases before to give him a chance. Hardly too much to ask!!?

I think you are getting me mixed up with you :D I can't remember saying I thought he had a chance I went DC CC Djak for the first 3.

I did say that Davey Russell would try and nurse him into the race rather than rush him into the race but alas as feared it never worked.
They simply didn't tire enough up front to let him into the race

They were right to be aggressive on CC, unfortunate how it ended.

he just never get off the ground.

Maybe CC will come to Punch for a rematch.

If Vautour decides to do a piece of work at home, he might show up too.

I would have thought they would have to send CC over to punchestown,he'll be probably over the hill next year.side on he just didn't pick up at the fence,in hindsight he probably wishes he got in close and just popped it-not the first time we have seen CC do that at a fence. He looked to be going better than anything and we will never know.
I backed DP and We have seen him for what he is today and I fear when he goes in the national we'll find he needs eight miles!DR thought he was on Lord Windermere or Pegasus but I've no complaints as the best horse won and Don Cossack would have won which ever way the the race was run......... Except if Vautour had run.

Ok Tanlic!! Clearly here you thought differently!! You had DP finishing 2nd!! No mention of Cue Card at all!!

I could prob find another 2 or 3 occasions where you gave DP a shout!!

You are all so involved in whether Vautour stays or not and this is simply not a case of if he does he wins.

I heard some idiot talk about him as being as good as Kauto Star on some preview night that PN was on......Duh!!!

PN never commented but I can imagine what he was thinking. Kauto Winner of 5 King George's and 2 Gold Cups Vautour winner of the Supreme and a f***ing JLT

He must have felt like scudding him round the lug.

The man with the least to say but the most worth listening to was Davey Russell who I thought was going to cry and the thought of not getting the leg over on Don Cossack....He obviously thinks he's a certainty and is praying BC has a rush of blood to the head and rides Don Poli.

My final 3 for the race

1. Don Cossack

2. Don Poli

3. Ruby Walsh

Here's the quote.

Kauto - my impression was that Don Poli was being ridden in the hope that he'd pick them off from a quick pace. It didn't happen & he definitely wasn't good enough to close the gap when Davy asked him to. That horse will never win a Gold Cup no matter how he was ridden. He won a weak renewal of the RSA & scraped home twice this season against animals we knew weren't good enough.

Get your money on Thistlecrack and it'll all feel much better in 12 months time.

FFs Kauto that's a bit tongue in ckeek post if ever there was one. Even if it does mention the first 3 home I would take no credit for such a post.

I have never wavered from Don Cossack and had Cue Card stood up I might have had the first 3 then I would have been more inclined to.

Unfortunately things are going to get tougher for Don Poli now and placing him will become very difficult with the younger talent coming through the ranks.

If I were you I'd find a new hero.

Sorry if I am coming across as a complete dick but did it ever cross your minds to watch the replay before you waste finger power and write complete nonsense
There's a lot of it going about today did someone spike the Guinness?

Paddy never rushed him into anything if fact he read the situation brilliantly well I would say.

Right after the fence was when the first 2 kicked and Paddy has seen it coming switch his horse in plenty time and brought him into a position where he is not going to be left behind with a load of ground to make up when the go for it. It would have been madness to offer the first 2 a start at that point, the man did the right thing but was unfortunate

He was still a fair way away from the fence when he switched and had dropped his hands and looked to be on a perfect stride....he was very relaxed, gave Cue Card no more than a click and a squeeze to come up but Cue Card decided to ignore the commands and walk through the fence........all the horses fault PB in no way to blame.

if you bothered to read on you would see that i said it looked completely different from the side

and it was a question I posted shortly after it happened. An initial impression

do you know what the difference is between a question and a statement???

come to think of it , you don't really ....do you?

Yes you put a question mark but then agreed with the suggestion he should have steadied the horse.......that's not just nonsense it's also a poor piece of bad aftertiming based on the fact the horse fell.

Cue Card cruised up to Djakadam O'F Boy and DC miles before the fence and they all jumped it in a line together at virtually the same speed.........so what the hell you 2 are on about is beyond me.

Yes, you are coming across as a complete dick :) I wasn't saying he was going hell for leather into the fence, but he made up a length or so on the other two going into the fence. He obviously felt he had the legs of them and was going to put the foot down from that point. All I asked was why did he not wait until after jumping a fence with history of taking out fancied runners throughout gold cup history. If he felt he had the legs of those in front of him, they weren't going to get a 'start' on him.

It's just a bloody shame he didn't jump it as we'll probably never know if he was good enough to win a Gold Cup. Hard to see him being in the same form again next season at 11 years of age. You could see in Tizzards face that he had him spot on yesterday.

Hopefully we'll see him at Aintree or Punchestown.

CUE CARD'S crashing fall in the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday is something Paddy Brennan will probably never get over, the jockey revealed on Saturday.

The Colin Tizzard-trained ten-year-old, who runs in the colours of Jean Bishop, fell three out when in contention with winner Don Cossack and runner-up Djakadam, missing out on a £1 million bonus from Jockey Club Racecourses after wins in the Betfair Chase and King George VI Chase this term.
Brennan, who congratulated Don Cossack's connections on their triumph, stopped short of saying Cue Card would have won, but did feel the popular chaser was warming to his challenge.
"He was only getting going and I was confident he'd get the trip," said Brennan, who won the Gold Cup on Imperial Commander six years ago.
"I felt if I had gotten over the fence I'd be able to sit and wait around the bend and gone on to win.
"Who knows if he'd would've - it was three out - but what I do know is when I jumped into that gap in between Don Cossack and Djakadam I felt I was on a very fresh horse."

Brennan, who said he had spoken to Tizzard's son Joe on Friday night and learned Cue Card was fine, added: "It's the hardest thing I've had to put myself through for sure. I'm probably more disappointed for Colin and Jean and her late husband Bob than I am for myself. I've been lucky enough to win a Gold Cup and yesterday I thought we had the horse.
"Everything was going to plan and we ended up on the ground. It's probably something I'll never get over, but I'm racing again at Kempton today and I'm a firm believer you've got to move forward."
