2018 Gold Cuppin'

Mullins hasn’t had a Gold Cup winner yet, despite having the winner in waiting and running it in the Ryanair. Vautour hadvastly better credentials than KV will be able to offer.

He is a complete no-hoper, and any bets struck on the horse are taking sentimentality/hope beyond acceptable extremes, imo.

How much would you like to bet Mullins is scratching his head and having a real good rethink about Yorkhill?

I just watched a video with Ricci and he pointed out something that could be very significant.

Not only did Faugheen run inexplicably badly so did Djakadam, Yorkhill, Caro Des Flos, Ballyward, Epicuris and Meri Devie

I said earlier it may have been the lack of fitness the way he suddenly went out like a light but it's too much of a coincidence that all of the aforementioned ran the same way.

Mullins surely realises he can't make a judgement on Yorkhill about the trip until this bug/virus his horses seems to be carrying has been eradicated

I suspect that's correct but they can't eradicate it until they identify it. There are several others that performed under par but he also had 4 winners yesterday.

The likes of John Quinn has 2 yard one at Bellwood Cottages and one at Bill Elsy's old place and the horses seldom if ever mix. I assume that the size of WPM's organisation he may also have 2 or even 3 yards???? That could explain the others being unaffected but Paul T said Lat's Dance felt flat and wasn't right despite winning...def something going round

Thing with Yorkhill is Mullins never really sounded too encouraged with the idea of him being a GC horse.

Our Duke is the forgotten horse and the brothers grim will probably save Disko for the Ryanair

Depressing. The race I'm potentially most happy about from an AP point of view is the Ryanair as I have Top Notch and Coney Island but it could be a shitshow if Yorkhill and Disko go for it and CI goes for the Gold Cup. ****.

I’m told on good authority Coney Island is Gold Cup bound.

I'd imagine he goes to leopardstown in early February for what was the Irish Henessy???

I’m not sure it would make sense but as I said I was told he’s JP’s Gold Cup horse and that is his target.

Perhaps but for me the forgotten horse who might just outstay all these speed merchants this time is Native River

People tend to forget he was only beaten just over 2 lengths and there's no Gold Cup form like Gold Cup form.

If he has improved for the rest he has got to be the one they all have to worry about if staying becomes the name of the game

Native River is, I believe, due to reappear in the Cotswold Chase at the Trials meeting at the end of January.

You’ve also got to factor in with NR that the GC last season was a bit of an afterthought after a gruelling season. If he’s primed for March this season he could be a different proposition but there’s always the chance they’ll use it as a tune up for the Grand National.

Now that the Gold Cup is looking wide open they may decide to have another crack. The issue I have with him as a Gold Cup contender is that he only has one speed which is good enough to break the will of most but not that 1% that are truly top class.

Tizzard in the paper today regards Native River.
"We don't have a definite plan yet. One run before Gold Cup. Either the Denman or find a hurdle race for him. He's in good nick".

Tizzards' comments suggest to me that Native River isn't being trained for the Gold Cup, and they are going to wait for the National weights to be published, before they do anything with him. Aintree is surely his target this year, rather than Cheltenham.
