Aintree - Other Races

Before BMG's withdrawal I had written:

I’m firmly of the belief that Shishkin (11/4) bounced last time but I also believe he’d have to put up a career best to beat A Plus Tard’s best form, and I’m not sure I can see that happening. Bravemansgame (5/2f) needs to find a fair bit more to justify his price and I think 4/1 APT is huge, and 7/2 to three places with Coral even ‘huger’.

I wasn't going to be able to access Coral here in Spain so the third place was never an option for me but I'm happy to hammer APT at 11/4.

A cracking day's racing today, where I'm quite strong in some races, but taking wild swings at the others. My thoughts, for what they're worth:

I generally like to oppose horses who ran at Cheltenham at this meeting, and whilst I respect Stage Star, I thought he had a hard enough race at the Festival. For all the talk of "an extra week", I think it's a big ask for him to beat a fresh horse like Banbridge, who will be much better suited to this test, than he was in the Irish Arkle (that form franked emphatically at Cheltenham). I took 2/1 earlier in the week, and think O'Brien's horse has a massive chance. Saint Roi winning would be a kick in the spherical, but I'm not inclined to have any sickness insurance on him (not entirely convinced he will stay, tbh).

14:20
Zenta would appear to have a ton in hand here, but again, it's a quick-enough turnaround after the Festival, and she didn't appear to leave anything on the table there. Race conditions are in her favour though, and she probably has enough up her sleeve to go in here - though I'm not keen to take a short-price. Those immediately behind her in the betting don't appeal greatly, so have taken an each-way chance on Stuart Edmunds' Chaos Control (28/1), who was a fair handicapper on the level, and appeared to be getting the hang of things over hurdles at Market Rasen last time. There's a chance he has a preference for a right-handed track (been kept that way over hurdles), but equally, there's a chance - perhaps a small one - that he will improve for going this way around. Either way, he has to improve a bundle to worry the places, but is at least coming here off a decent break.

14:55
The race has lost some lustre after the withdrawal of Bravemansgame, but it hasn't really changed my opinion on the outcome. I'll be backing Shishkin with a fair bit of confidence here, and laying APT in the Win and Place markets. Ahoy Senor clearly goes well here, but in real terms, I think his level is some way lower than the others, and will instead put Conflated (an under-rated horse, imo) into a forecast with Shish.

15:30
I would really love to see Nico let Constitution Hill loose today, smash them all up, and push that hurdles-rating to the place it really belongs. Perhaps, if they're going to go chasing next season, today will be the day they decide to really go for it over hurdles. I certainly hope so, as it would be some sight to behold.

16:05
As per the Longshot thread, I've had a fair each-way cut at Envoye Special - though it's a bet borne more out of intrigue and (I hope) the price being wrong, than any real confidence. I'd be delighted if he could hit the places.

16:40
As per Lee's mention earlier in the thread, I'm hoping for a big performance from Grey Diamond, who I think is probably well-in today, despite a 7lb hike for his last run. He would have hacked-up at Sandown the time before but for falling, and a mark of 142 doesn't seem at all punitive to me.

The Bumper is a complete mystery. Will probably have small bets on the four outsiders for an interest.

APT has had issues, is out-of-form, and was already beaten in the Gold Cup (imo) when meeting some trouble. Can see him being PU'd again.

Ahoy Senor is a Grade 2 horse rather than a Grade 1 horse. A steeplechasing version of The New One.

Conflated; admirable, but an open book. Fundamentally, not as good as Shishkin.

Ga Law - out-classed.

I should be doing the Spotlights in the Post!

I never looked at the form. was doing it all by memory and got my horses mixed up and thought APT was Allaho which worried me.

Penny had drippoed and I doubt if APT would win if he set off now he's a has been wannabe now.

More concerend for Brian Hughes having to ride that maniac Afyerheid Senor than the horse actually putting his best foot forward and not straight through a fence.

Wouldn't think of underestimating conflated he's a very good horse at this level.

GA Law was a one time future star of mones. Hasn't worked out that way,

Nicky Henderson wouldn't be sending Shishkin if he showed any signs of distress after Cheltenham.

He'll be able to cruise round here cant see him getting beat..way too much speed for the others

Looks like Bold Endeavour doesn't run in the 3M handicap hurdle Saturday.

Looking forward to seeing him next season now anyway, in races especially over 2M5F or thereabouts over hurdles and fences. I reckon he has a good race or two in him.

The guy simply has no right to run the horse as he no longer owns it.

It would be like you going bankruput but you can keep your rolls royce

The horse was going to run in the sole ownership of Bryan Drew so I don’t understand your point

The guy owes money, this horse is a significant asset and by running runs the risk of being worthless, its pretty simple really!

Simon Rowlands suggest hurdles track riding a little slower than the chase track, going by the Anniversary time.

Thought he jumped fine, but he didn’t do a lick for 22 furlongs…..they should at least try headgear.

Ahoy Senor behaved himself very well today but was put firmly in his place by a better horse....10/10 for determination from both Shishkin and Nico.

Furthest thing from my mind would be the Gold Cup for Shishkin he's good but not that good and I am convinced he hates the place.

Just realised Constitution Hill who I have backed for distance has to win by more than 10 lengths not by 10 lengths or more.

My lack of concentration since I stopped gambling heavily is getting worse:blink:

A Plus Tard also doesn’t look happy.

I wonder with Shishkin he’s still conscious of that bone condition that apparently did for him last year? I mean who knows when it comes to Hendo giving an explanation....I wouldn’t exactly stake my life on his complete honesty!

That wasn't terribly impressive from CH, to my eye, though he got the job done readily enough. Did Nico make too much use of him early?
