Aintree - Other Races

Strange race which did nothing to enhance or affect his reputation.

It's not like he suddenly picked up and left them all for dead it was safe and workmanlike without ever looking in danger of losing.

Job done next race? 100/1 it will be over fences and that is the last time he'll ever jump a hurdle.

Before BMG's withdrawal I had written:

I’m firmly of the belief that Shishkin (11/4) bounced last time but I also believe he’d have to put up a career best to beat A Plus Tard’s best form, and I’m not sure I can see that happening. Bravemansgame (5/2f) needs to find a fair bit more to justify his price and I think 4/1 APT is huge, and 7/2 to three places with Coral even ‘huger’.

I wasn't going to be able to access Coral here in Spain so the third place was never an option for me but I'm happy to hammer APT at 11/4.

Haven't seen the race yet but if I'm not going to win a race then I'm glad Shishkin won it.

Spoke to Chris Barber yesterday about Famous Clermont in the Foxhunters and they are very much looking forward to him running there. He failed to stay in the soft ground at Cheltenham but if you review the race, until he hit the hill and emptied on the ground, he looked all over the winner. Over the shorter trip, the ground shouldn’t be a problem (I did ask). I also asked if he had schooled him over National type fences but he said he hadn’t as he’d rather let the horse work it out himself which surprised me...apparently it’s not considered so much of a “thing” to have to familiarise themselves now the fences are easier. He’s done plenty of showjumping schooling though to focus him so perhaps he’ll be heading to Hickstead next...

I did tell ya’all!

The horse was very tricky as a youngster and they have done an amazing job keeping a lid on him and getting him to this point. And Chris Barber, the trainer is only 25! Incredibly talented lad and so nice. And I just love Will.....they’re just such a great bunch of people. Happy days!

Reasonable day all round, with the confident bets hitting in the main, and the haymakers nowhere.

Onwards and upwards.

The Melling Chase looks very open today.

Minella Drama has found the form that saw him go off fav for the Pendil
but he folded 2 out behind Pic D'Ohry after holding every chance 2 out.

Back to his best and given a possible soft lead he looks worth an EW bet at 28/1.with Bet365

Though the two Nichols horses ran poorly today, do think his Complete Unknown will run well in the first race Friday despite having a big hotpot to beat

Each Way....currently 13-2

I’m not keen on either of the Irish horses at the head of the Top Novices market, as I reckon both want a stiffer test than this sharp 2m. Luccia reportedly didn’t work well before the Festival, and being in a forgiving mood - plus her getting 7lbs from the geldings - the 9/2 has been enough to tempt me into a bet.

I’ve also stuck her in a double with Pic D’Orhy.

At least I will get to actually watch the races tomorrow and not surreptitiously look at my phone under the desk at work!

Fortunately I’m working from home still so not a problem for me although I did have a MS Teams meeting while the Zenta and Shishkin races were on. Everyone else was a bit puzzled why I was so keen to rush through the agenda [emoji3]

The 2019 Festival was the first one I had to 'work' in the office, since I first got into racing in 1992.

I'd backed Klassical Dream in the opener, and ducked into the bogs to watch the Supreme. I can only imagine what the guy having a slash outside must have thought, when he heard me saying "Get in there you little beauty" from my Trap 1 perch.

I often think it's a crime to students that I didn't become a teacher or lecturer

But the three months summer holidays in peak flat season and lack of March holiday is enough for me to stay corporate

Gerri Colombe impressive

That's as good a round of jumping ive ever seen from a novice, never touched a twig

He’s won on good, soft, and g/s so not sure about that.

Was thinking more that it would be on quicker side, and therefore suit Fakir more, but doesn’t look that way going by the first race.
