Batfair Hurdle

What a silly performance that was at the start, no reason to stop them at all.

No, but next best thing

Can't believe you have Cheltenian bottom of the pile EC , he was a good fourth in this last year and although Hobbs had one who didn't get in, he has pulled a couple of others out and looks to have left this one in by design. More than a social runner I reckon and I think he will be placed again.

Did anyone even mention the winner....apart from the commentator?

I'm sure Roddy told us the horse was fancied each-way.

Strange race and for the second year in a row a prominent runner in soft ground wasn't reeled in. Maybe the pace wasn't that fast. Maybe the ground wasn't that slow. In the first TV race Bygones Sovereign executed the legendary instruction to perfection - 'start off in front and keep improving your position'.

Disappointing.

Looking back at the race, I'd say it was the jockey, rather than Calipto, who disappointed. Certainly sat well out the back for a horse who usually races prominently, and when push came to shove, just didn't have the gearchange.
Maybe STD thought the ground a piece softer than it turned out, as he'd been up in a helicopter, rather than at the track previously.

I wonder if, when they put down the covers, it leads to a track bias. Nothing, apart from Mr Mole whom they allowed to catch up anyway in a small field, came from off the pace all day.

It could be Calipto needed a run and was being prepped for March.

For what race though, Paul?

He had a much better chance at newbury off his handicap mark, than he will in pretty-much any race at Cheltenham, where he can only really go for the Champion or the County......and he'd be a total no-hoper in the former.

Whisper it softly, but the Coral Cup would probably be his absolute metier.

Hmmn....you might be right, reet.....has stayed-on well enough in his outings so far.

Paul kealy made a good point last week about last years Triumph Hurdle form looking rather poor, so it may just be that Calipto isn't much cop.

Not sure about the Coral Cup reet. I would be doubtful about the trip.
I think he's better than he showed. Though could just be like fonz has pointed out, they aint up to much.

I would want a refund on that wind op mind.

Am I right that Festival handicap entries are about now and that weights are towards the end of the month? No bets until NRNB but looking out for Edeymi.

His sprint-sired sibling won over 2.5m in France, and over 12f on the flat. Has been campaigned and ridden like a horse who'd need further eventually, too.
See no reason to suspect the wind-op hasn't worked either, despite my trepidation before the race was run.

Not convinced. But we'll see.

Sorry, only just seen the responses. Yes Coral Cup in my mind. I too had made the assumption that he may need a step up in trip and better ground, and that this may be his target.

Nicholls is pretty good at plotting them up under the radar for handicaps at the Festival, and if I'm wrong with this one he'll have another one.

Can't wait for the handicap entries to be honest.
