Cheltenham 2015

Laugh all you like, its all about opinions and only time will tell.

When Champagne Fever won his maiden point to point at Quakerstown he clocked the fastest time on the card, he personally beat six opponents that between them never posted a rating above 108 in any of their subsequent events and that to me speaks volumes for the quality of the rest of the card. Using maiden point to points as a guide to the future chances of a horse producing their best performances over those distances in my opinion is a big mistake, the quality of horses competing in those events is often so poor that a good horse can win without even coming off the bridle, hardly a stamina test but more of a guide to soundness for prospective buyers.

Champagne Fever does not seem to have a definitive turn of foot, he appears to rely more on good crisp clean and accurate jumping coupled with well judged pace by his pilot, one who can also use the characteristic nature of a particular track to compliment his horses strengths. Having stamina present in the pedigree isn’t a definitive rule or a measure that defines distance as the order in a horse, it can equally contribute to a horse being able to last out or having the requisite stamina needed for a very strongly run race. Many 2 mile Champion chase winner’s pedigrees were laden with stamina.

I don’t think he can win a Gold Cup from the front, I say this because if you look at the sectional times he set in the grade 2 Slaney Novices Hurdle at Naas, ok it was notable for the fast early pace he set, but no faster than that of the Supreme yet he stopped like shot from the fourth last and from there he actually ran it 16 seconds slower than the maiden hurdlers did earlier on the card, a result that subsequently saw him resorted to 2 miles. I am more inclined to think that once he fully fills his frame, strengthens up and refine’s his already fantastic jumping technique that he will be a formidable opponent over the minimum trip.

Let’s not forget he only just got touched off in a very good quality Arkle field, historically a relative breeding ground for future QM winners and he did this by using a tactic that his trainer had recognised as one that ought to suit the combination of speed and stamina; from the off, run and jump them ragged.

Let’s also not forget that he was touched off on the line by Western Warhorse, a horse that also has a great deal of stamina in his pedigree. By Westerner a thorough stayer himself and a fairly new conscript to the breeding world, a Sire that saw a few of his other progeny successfully strut their stuff at Cheltenham recently, all be it over much further and seemingly over the optimum distances that the various pedigree balances had suggested to the very astute trainers who successfully campaigned them accordingly.

Finally I would like to mention One Man, after years of being campaigned unsuccessfully at Cheltenham he eventually got to taste the champagne once he was put over his optimum distance at that track.

He's always been regarded as a staying chaser and wouldn't have run in a 3m point as a 4yo, otherwise.
Likewise, the Champion Bumper requires stamina, and is the normal preserve of the staying chaser, and Punchestown is one of the stiffest tracks in Ireland, moreso over 2m 4f, as they have to face the stiff finishing hill twice.
Though intended for races over further he ran in the Arkle purely on Ruby's insistence, as he clearly thought he had the class to prevail anyway. As a stayer, he clearly had little choice but to force the pace from the off, as he had in the Supreme, so judging him as having "no definitive turn of foot" is probably a long way from the truth.
As you say, it's all about opinions, but (like sectionals for Naas novice hurdles) some are just too daft to deserve credence.

I'm more inclined to think he chose between Felix and Champagne in the respective races they took in because they were the races best suited, so why or what should change is pure guess work.

Felix Yonger was prepped exclusively over two miles and his pedigree suggests he has less stamina than the grey. CF went for the shorter race because he has always been seen as their number one novice and they wanted to run him in the more presigious contest.

He took in the Supreme because that was the most prestigious race he was entered in. Same with the Arkle.
If Sprinter Sacre and/or Simonsig go for the QM no way does Willie run him in that. And the Ryanair is a non starter.

What would you suggest then, that he takes on his own horse in all the other races and leaves the QM alone because of who's in it.

He must surely rate CF to be his best 2 miler because he ran him in the best 2 mile novice race.

Kicking king and WOA took in the Arkle.

No harm teaching a staying horse of the future to learn how to jump at pace.

By the way neither of those horses were quite good enough to win an Arkle either.

I bet the owner of Felix Yonger was happy that he had to run in the wrong race when the horse considered to have the most stamina ran in the 2 mile race, two wrongs don't make a right.

Next year I would imagine Felix Yonger will go for the Queen Mother.

I doubt Willie is arsed about the Ryanair.

He is desperate to win the Gold Cup after all his near misses and CF and Sir Des Champs will both be aimed at the race with leading chances I would think.

I know and I agree and the lesser distance doesn't tax them as a young horse whilst they are learning to race. It's well documented he likes to try his stayers in this.

But the point I'm making isn't that, My point is that it's my opinion that I think Champagne Fever is a out and out 2 miler and I am fully entitled to that. I think he will be a champion at that distance and I will only be proven wrong or right in the years to come ...and anyone else who has an opinion, same or otherwise is guessing just as much as me, irrespective of what they may believe just because a trainer that can say white is black and talks a riddle that only his genius can fathom says.

It would seem the general consensus judging by the betting is that he will go QM....for now!!!

:lol:I hope anyone who backs him enjoys the agonising lead up to next years festival, when all Mullins horses are still entered in all the races right up to the Sunday and beyond...

Just look at his pedigree. Not a chance.

Six Previous winners of the QM all that have similar staying pedigrees to Champagne Fever, and then there's Monets Garden, he stayed and won twice over 3 miles in hurdle races but couldn't manage it over fences. He is almost a half brother...his Sire is the Dam sire of Champagne Fever...I urge you to look and then tell me "No Chance"

Find me a Point to Point course that has races less than 3 miles:
Toomebridge
Dromahane
Durrow
Monksgrange
Limavady
Downpatrick
Rathmorrissey
Liscarroll
Borris House
Maralin
Down Royal
Every race on every card is over 3 miles

Check out Betfair.

Champagne Fever jumped superb in the arkle.

I think they will take the Queen Mother route next season, and maybe later up in distance, but willie doesnt have other horse of interest in the division.

What is worrying is that after such a round of jumping with this as his tarjeta and he was beaten by horse in blinkers once raced.

Also note I have him 158p
So he has to improve a stone to beat Sire de Grugy (173) ,and who knows what will happening with Sprinter Sacre. (Better than 190).

will all depend on opposition imo. they'll have an eye on what goes down in england. i don't think sire de grugy would scare anyone off but if one of the two henderson horses comes back healthy and into form they're going to put a few off such is their talent.

suspect we'll be in for a season of guessing again. one point that someone made is a good one. it appears mullins has no taste for the ryanair. can't even remember any of his better horses going for it.

Isn't anyone concerned that the Irish drew a blank in the novice chases at Cheltenham?

Yet they won a couple of the big handicaps with Spring Heeled and Savello?

Are we seeing a change of focus? Could the better novices be getting targeted at the handicaps? Holywell is technically a novice too.

Something to keep in mind for next year?

Djakadam will be Mullins number 1 in the Gold Cup if he runs. It's whether he feels it is a year too soon for him.

As for Felix. It would help if he ran in the right race. Would have won the Arkle.

Ffs Bar, he's making it up as he goes along.
Ask him where the Naas sectionals are he begged us all to look at.

champagne fever was beaten how far? short head? if he was beaten out of sight, fair point but unsure if it represents any kind of trend...don cossack, djakadam significant fallers, ballycasey a non-stayer....the 2 and a half miler looked like a hot race though and taquin is exciting.

no real sign of any change of focus at all, savello an experienced enough horse anyway, and spring heeled a national type..

champagne the horse to take from the year though..while djakadam will mop up some prizemoney next winter if he stays sound

Champagne Fever is by a son of Slip Anchor out of a Roselier mare. Huge stamina pedigree.

VPU - poncey American sire
Piperton - never even heard of this one
Flyingbolt - not interested in pedigrees from that era
Fortria - same
Remittance Man - Can't see much stamina in his pedigree, esp from the sire
Monet's Garden - Only tried twice over three miles and beaten both times before stamina was an issue. Didn't act at Cheltenham

The man's a total fantasist, Euro.
Spoofed us about the respective markets, and had Willie Mullins from 'very astute' to abject liar within the space of an afternoon, also.
Joined us around the same time Bruce's alter ego got the boot, too.

So he cant be very astute and tell lies. It would seem you are a fantasist too, you have no hard and fast evidence you just fantasise with ifs and buts and throw out insults as you back ups.

You will be telling me he's a crap trainer next and that you can work him out.
Oh you got Champagne Fever worked out haven't you...not.

Your no wiser than anyone else just a Tit
