Christmas Songs

Just thought I'd extend this topic to Christmas films.

Obviously, for me, It's a Wonderful Life is the daddy but I tend to hold off until nearer the big day before watching it.

Invariably I start with The Bishop's Wife (Carey Grant, David Niven, Loretta Young) followed by Die Hard then work my way through our collection of DVDs.

So far I've watched the likes of Miracle on 34th Street (the original) among others and am currently watching Holiday Inn (which you have to watch before White Christmas) and loving it.

For the record, I'm not a great fan of Home Alone and I've never seen Elf because I just know I wouldn't laugh at it.

No shortage of other great ones.

I watched Lost at Christmas the other night which was awful. But then I watched it again. It was quite sweet. I’ve been tied up with getting rid of a mouse which had decided to live in my kitchen so my plan to embrace Christmas in a big way this year has met with a set back.

I’ve never seen the big three that DO has mentioned.

Best Christmas film by a mile is The Muppets Christmas Carol.

I quite enjoy a lot of the hallmark schmaltz - and last year Amazon did one called Your Christmas or Mine,
That was nice.

Last Christmas was quite sweet too, even though the twist was pretty obvious early on.

I have a big pile of Christmas films and tend to watch 4 or 5 a year so that I'm not watching the same ones every year.

My favourite few would be, in no particular order:

It's a wonderful life
The George C Scott version of a Christmas carol
Scrooged
Bad Santa (I think DO would be better avoiding this one!)
Polar express

And I quite enjoy Christmas chronicles on Netflix.

In that case you might like one called A Christmas Visitor (starring William Devane), Trudij. It's usually on TV at some point but might also be on Prime/Netflix/Disney or whatever. You'll need a hanky.

I know I shouldn't like it but I can't help it with this film!

I’ve just bought the DVD’s of The Box of Delights and The Children of Green Knowe, the latter being our favourite tv series when the children were little. I’ve bought my granddaughter the books, too. I’ve wanted to rewatch them for years. There was a very sweet Canadian film that used to be on tv round Christmas time, called The Last Winter ( another film that features a little white horse, something that seems to be in a lot of these in Christmas/Winter films). One of those rite of passage films that the Americans and Canadians excel at. Very sweet and sad but suits someone like me that loves wallowing in melancholy!

I have the DVD of the Box of Delights having been enthralled with it as a child. It hasn't aged well and I shall just have to cup my hands around the gentle flame of nostalgia.

Ohhhh - I vaguely remember the box of delights, it was that little bit too grown up for me when it was on tv but I remember watching it.

The Bishops Wife is on tv over Christmas. I’ve never seen it so I’ll check it out. I’m excited to find that there are going to be Homes Under the Hammer celebrity specials for Christmas.

Songs

I Believe in Father Christmas
Fairytale of New York
Little Drummer Boy (Bing & Bowie)

Movies

National Lampoons Christmas Vacation
Wonderful Life
The Holiday (would have put Die Hard but didn't want to create too much contention)

I have somehow managed to go through life without hearing Dana's It's Gonna Be A Cold Cold Christmas. Very pleased that this is now rectified.

In the last couple of days I've watched:

Meet John Doe (Gary Cooper & Barbara Stanwyck, another ace Frank Capra film)
Going My Way (Bing Crosby, Barry Fitzgerald, a Leo McCarey film)

I watched Your Christmas or Mine 2 yesterday [emoji16] if you saw the first one ( probably only me on here!!) and liked it, you’ll like the second one…

Isn’t it? Even post problems she’s got a fantastic voice and she delivers it brilliantly. ( credit to Jimmy fallon too - he’s a lot better than people think)

Just started watching Lethal Weapon from my Christmas film list.

I'd totally forgotten the open theme is Jingle Bell Rock, the brilliant Bobby Helms version.

They sang Fairytale of New York at Shane's funeral last Friday.Incredibly uplifting -well worth checking out on YouTube.

Yes, it’s great:

My favourite Christmas movie is very short, less than three minutes. The Drifters’ White Christmas:

Like moehat, I enjoy carols by the likes of Maddy Prior, Mediaeval Babes and many others but this one, God Rest aye Merry, Gentlemen, by Loreena McKennitt is a favourite:

Thanks. I liked that Loreena McKennitt song. I’d never heard of her. It also threw up lots of interpretations of Christmas songs on utube. Currently enjoying the Christmas songs concert from the Albert Hall concert in 2017 on Sky Arts. Wouldn’t normally be my cup of tea but it’s good fun.

Just relistened to 'Bring your daughter to the slaughter' by Iron Maiden and to my embarrassment had never realised that this was a Christmas song.
