Departures 2009

Curtain Call brings home the ups and downs of of owning racehorses, how fragile and precarious, that fate plays a good hand to some and a cruel one to others. So much promise shown .... and then losing their life like this. A real shame.

Nasty incident in the last at Dundalk today. Johnny Murtagh and his mount took a really heavy fall, while another horse - Queen Althea, I think - also came down. ATR had to switch before details could be given.

Any news? The first faller looked really bad and Johnny Murtagh was down for a long time, too. Hope all are ok.

Moonquake died of a heart attack last night while in Doncaster course stables prior to his intended engagement today.

Farinelli suffered a fatal injury on Sunday on his first start in the UK. He was owned by Byerley Racing who are competition to Winning Ways in Ireland so always kept an eye on how their horses were doing. Farinelli had done well for them but he needed fast ground so wasn't surprised to see him transferred to the UK. Shame he was killed as he was running a nice race and could see him being a nice handicapper for some of the UK festivals. They also have Aspectoflove who has won and been placed for them this year.

SHANBALLA confirmed dead. FARINELLI was indeed running a very good race and in an excellent pozzie to challenge - bloody shame. That said, one or two took some stonking falls at Downpatrick today, but all got up and cantered on. It's so much sod's law at times.

That is sad news, commiserations to the Candy yard and Thurloe Thoroughbreds. He was pretty lightly raced, must have been quite a fragile horse but talented, 4 wins and 2 seconds from only 10 runs at 4.

SAUCY, 8 y.o. mare owned by Bernadette Quinn, trained by Tom Dascombe. Modest but honest, won the Quinns a few thousand and some good bets landed with her, too. John Quinn came into Lingfield yesterday and told me she'd died since her last run, which was also at Lingfield in February. A daft accident on the gallops - her work rider came off and the saddle slipped. Somehow, the girth became entangled in her legs, and badly cut into a tendon. It was too traumatic, and she had to be put down. Very sad as, lowly though she was, she was a good little trier.
