Something I've been meaning to do for some time is a brief review (or not so brief depending on the day's racing) of previous days' racing. Due to a lack of belief on my part about the commitment involved that I needto show and the interest to other forumites I have put it off until now. Well here goes.

Saturday Aug 23.

Curragh 2.00 8f. Maiden

Found, the winner, is beautifully bred being by Galileo out of Red Evie. The dam was very good on the racecourse winning the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown as a 3-y-o and the following season won the Lockinge at Newbury. Until now her offspring haven't been up to much but things may change with this filly. Making her racecourse debut, she missed the break and was out the back early, she made smooth progress over two out, went third and then quickened in the last half-furlong to win nicely.

Back in fourth there was a promising debut by the Big Bad Bob filly, Bocca Bacita held up and keeping on late.

Curragh 2.35 6f. Maiden

The one to note from this event was the second, Clutchingatstraws. C Un-fancied at 33/1 this daughter of Showcasing was making her debut, not the quickest from the stalls she raced towards the rear of the field making headway halfway and then showing some speed when quickening up inside the last furlong and closing on the winner at the line.

Curragh 4.20 5f. Listed

AP O'Brien knows a hell of a lot more about breeding and racing than I but I'm not convinced that The Great War is a five furlong horse.

Goodwood 2.20 7f. Group 3

The winner Malabar was given a lovely ride by Hughsie and the third Zifena caught the eye recovering well from an awkward start, her trainer Eve Johnson Houghton does well with her 2-y-os.

Goodwood 4.05 6f. Maiden

Flashy Diva a nice winner for first-season-sire SHOWCASING but had to show plenty of determination to hold the challenges from Penny Pepper (Eve Johnson Houghton again) and Mystic Jade making her debut. The last named was racing to the rear and near the stand rail early on but when Hughes started riding she had to be switched to the outside and ran on nicely.

Newmarket 2.10 6f. Maiden

Astrophysics a PACO BOY colt having his third run won this in good style making practically all but the one that might be worth keeping an eye on is the second Encore D'Or. By Oasis Dream he is a half-brother to Equiano, he looks to have some size about him and seemed well prepared for his racecourse debut, he went off 4/1 in an open betting race, he raced prominently throughout and should come on for the experience. Two others worth making a note of are Rahmah a slow starting staying on VALE OF YORK colt in third and Waady an APPROVE colt who was green being slowly away and then pulling hard but showing to have hopes of winning soon.

York 3.15 6f. Group 2 Gimcrack

A very close finish (a nose) between the well-bred Muhaarar (by Oasis Dream and a half-brother to three black type animals) and Jungle Cat. Not sure that the form amounts to much with the third and fourth quite exposed and seemingly well off Group 2 animals. The run of Glenalmond in fourth another good run by a Karl Burke 2-y-o.

York 4.25 5f. Listed

For once the Spencer drop-out tactic worked well, Mind Of Madness just getting the better of the unlucky STARSPANGLEDBANNER colt, Moonraker. The fourth home Lightscameraaction showed great early speed.

What did you make of the Pivotal colt of Cumani's at York on Friday? Not known for two year olds especially first time out but White Lake looked eye catching under Ryan Moore in the UKs richest maiden to me!

Nice enough debut in a strong race. Dam has produced plenty of winners but nothing decent for some time, starting price suggests he hadn't been showing a lot at home.

Winners yesterday for STARSPANGLEDBANNER (Rotherwick) and SHOWCASING (Clouds Rest).

Runners today for: FAST COMPANY(2), MAKFI, ZEBEDEE(2), APPROVE, ARCANO(3), RIP VAN WINKLE(2), PACO BOY(3), LORD SHANAKILL, HELLVELYN, SHOWCASING, EQUIANO(2) and ALFRED NOBEL.

Sunday Aug 24

Curragh 3.30 7f. Group 2

Raydara surprisingly allowed to go off at 16/1 showed a nice turn of foot to take this.

Curragh 4.05 7f. Group 2

Gleneagles justified the short odds and won with a little in hand. Vert De Grece, in second place, ran well again.

Yesterday there were winners for FAST COMPANY (Paddys Motorbike) and PACO BOY (Azraff).

Today there are runners for FAST COMPANY, RIP VAN WINKLE, MAKFI, PACO BOY, ZEBEDEE(5), EQUIANO, ARCANO, LORD SHANAKILL and ALFRED NOBEL.

The MAKFI runner Granola (Ripon 2.30) may be of interest. A filly out of Common Knowledge who has already produced three useful animals in: Astrophysical Jet, Coral Wave and Coin Of The Realm all of whom achieved RP ratings of 100+.

Newcastle 1.45 7f. Maiden

Grey Sensation continued the good form of the Karl Burke 2-y-os winning this in good style by three lengths and a bit. Yeenaan, a son of Rip Van Winkle, reportedly was very green and coltish pre-race his run was interesting and this report on www.b2yor.co.uk probably sums it up:

" Watching Yeenaan being hauled to the back of the field, and out of the race effectively, after an ok start brought back the usual thoughts about 'Schooling in Public'. Clearly a Grey Area with inexperieinced 2yos where to draw the line with the 'Schooling' issue. But the Rules of Racing do say each horse should be ridden in such a way as to enable the best possible placing. Many 2yos are clearly not ridden in this way and instead are working to trainer objectives about how to run a race.

But, if you thought Yeenaan had a solid profile and looked ok in PRev you were actually wasting your time going into any analysis whatsoever. The horse wasn't going to be ridden in a way that would enable the Best Placing. How about a compromise given the enforcement issues? Trainers are allowed to go in for 'Schooling In Public' but must declare it in Advance. We can then argue about whether any wins or placing attract any Prize Money, including the horse in the betting, etc. Even better, can we have 'Schooling Races' instead which are not 'real' racea as such and no betting. But, we can't carry on with multiple horses every day, including many at shorter prices, ridden in definace of the basic rule that underlies all Racing integrity."

Newcastle 2.15 7f. Maiden

Bravo Zolo, another son of Rip Van Winkle, ran a race very similar to that of his stable companion and the above comments could easily be appropriate for him.

Newcastle 3.25 8f. Handicap.

The official handicapper seems to have underestimated the ability of Azraaf, the winner of this. He was winning his second nursery despite being raised 10 lbs. for the previous effort. On the evidence of this race, always travelling like the winner and pulling away nicely before perhaps tiring in the last 100 yards, there is more to come.

Warwick 1.25 6f. Maiden.

From what I could see from the video Terror isn't very big but this daughter of Kodiac (having a great season as a sire of 2-y-os) certainly has an engine. I see that Gigilo has flagged her up from a time angle as well.

To finish today's piece another quote from www.b2yor.co.uk:

Also a good example of an irritating practice with Twitter. Connections of horses - trainers, owners, breeders, sales houses, etc. etc. - popping up with "Boy can I train/own/breed/auction ...." Tweets every time they stumnle into a win. Qatar Racing's Bloodstock advisor and Prince Frank's Boss soon, David Redvers on Twitter after Terror's win with a "oy that was impressive, boy can I bloodstock..." type Tweet. But no worthwhile insight into Terror's background, what quality the win actually was, etc.

But, the really irritating thing is the terrible cherry-picking & positive confirmation. The Redvers' Tweet would be acceptable if he ever sent Tweets lie - "Jeez, but that Total Domination is stinking the place out..". Or, "Why did we buy Thumper? & when is ruddy Cowell ever going to get him fit??". "

Now, I don't use my Twitter account very often but I have read stuff similar to this on forums and it can become very irritating.

Posted this on Aug 14:

"Very expensive (2.85 million euro) colt Ol' Man River makes his debut in the Leopardstown 6.45 this evening.

A son of Montjeu out of the very good race mare Finsceal Beo, winner of the English and Irish Guineas in 2007. A negative though is that her only previous runner, a filly by Sea The Stars didn't have a run as a 2-y-o and her only run has been in a 10f. maiden at Salisbury in May of this year where she went off 3/1f. but could only manage 8th. in a 12 runner race."

Taken out that day runs this afternoon at the Curragh 2.05.

Indeed. Reminds me a little of St Nicholas Abbey.
Very well behaved before saddling and parade, so much so that you would question his parentage but one of the better ones for sure.
The placed horses were fine lookers also.
