Flat horses to note for the season

After the first two days of Goodwood without a runner from our stable we are making up for lost time tomorrow :D. Unfortunately, four of them are in the same race!

CANBERRA LEGEND - (Goodwood, 15:00)

timeform
AW debut winner in February. Took the jump up in class in his stride when following up in Feilden Stakes at Newmarket (9f, good to soft) in April. Disappointed in the Dante but straight back on track when fifth in the Hampton Court at Royal Ascot (1¼m, good to firm). Shapes as if he'll stay 1½m.

HAVE SECRET - (Goodwood, 13:50)

timeform
Improved with each start last year, winning 2 nurseries, and has continued on the up this term too, very good fourth of 15 in Golden Gates Handicap at Royal Ascot (10f, good to firm) 40 days ago. Enters calculations nudged up 1 lb.

MAN OF EDEN - (Goodwood, 16:45)

timeform
Irish import who landed the odds on debut for this yard in a Newcastle maiden (1m) in January and has been shaping up well in handicaps of late, again conceding first run when a staying-on third at Haydock last month. Cheekpieces replace blinkers and big-field scenario will suit.

PERFUSE - (Goodwood, 13:50)

timeform
Progressive Lope De Vegas colt who impressed with his 2 novice wins before shaping very well when fifth of 19 in King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot in June, travelling best long way and faring best of those ridden close to the pace. Big shout off an unchanged mark.

PROMOTER - (Goodwood, 13:50)

timeform
Ready winner of 7f Chepstow novice last September and has taken his form up a level this season, very good fifth of 13 in 10f handicap at Epsom in June. May do better still so needs considering.

THEORYOFEVERYTHING - (Goodwood, 13:50)

timeform
Created a taking impression when making a winning debut in 7f Doncaster novice (heavy) in April. Yet to build on that though and came in only third of 4 in handicap at Yarmouth (8f, good) 34 days ago. Up in trip with cheekpieces on now and more needed.

WILDFELL - (Goodwood, 16:45)

timeform
Highly progressive since joining this stable, completing the 4-timer with a degree of comfort in 11-runner handicap at Doncaster in June. Set a stiff task but excelled himself despite finishing last of 6 in listed company at Newmarket. Assessor reacted but hard to know his limit.

Canberra Legend just lacked the pace of the first two but it was a sound effort up in trip. His trainer is pleased with the way the colt is maturing and is likely to run him in the Great Voltigeur, a race connections won last season with Deauville Legend.rap

Have Secret had iust a distant view of the winner at the finish but has now made the frame in a trio of hot 3yo handicaps this term, and on a variety of different ground. He deserves to win a good prize.RP

3rd/17 10/1
Midfield on inner, good headway when not clear run repeatedly and badly hampered over 2f out, soon switched left, rallied and pressed leaders inside final furlong, did well in the circumstances (op 12/1)RP

PERFUSE - (Goodwood, 13:50)

timeform

2nd/17. 28/1
Dwelt start, towards rear on inner, good headway from 3f out, not clear run against far rail over 2f out, soon in the clear going best, led over 1f out, headed final 110yds, kept on (op 25/1 tchd 22/1)

As above - I have not linked to SL race replays this time because I’m not sure anyone uses them. If anyone wants I’ll continue to put them in.

Perfuse was dogshit, as was Moore honestly on him.

Man of Eden I nixed from my tracker after his Newmarket run but his next outing behind Nails Murphy at Haydock was franked by Bajan Bandit in a big way at York last weekend. I hovered over the back button and I think my upset over the French filly's defeat just stopped me adding to the misery. Would have been awful if he'd won.

Have Secret sums up why this has been such a **** season for me. Nice tracker horse, always double figures - just keeps finding one too good. In good years horses like this win for you.

Tomorrow:

SHANROE - (Galway, 20:10)

timeform
Smart gelding. 16/1, unseated rider in listed race at Limerick (12.5f, good) 42 days ago. Beat only 2 rivals when winning this last year.

AWAAL - (Goodwood, 15:00)

timeform
Excellent second of 22 in Lincoln at Doncaster (1m, heavy) on reappearance. Likely found race coming too soon when last in French Listed race 19 days later and quickly back on the up with a brace of excellent placed efforts in high-end handicaps. Return to 1m no issue and cheekpieces now on.

BALANCE PLAY - (Goodwood, 17:20)

timeform
Progressive sort who wasn't hard pressed to open his account at Chester a month ago. More to come but he's likely to be pestered up front this time.

FLAG OF ST GEORGE - (Goodwood, 16:45)

timeform
Opened account at Newmarket in May and improved on that form when second of 6 in nursery at Windsor (6f, good, 10/3) 11 days ago. Can race off same mark and should go well again.

INTRICACY - (Goodwood, 17:20)

timeform
Already developing a consistent record and found improvement to score readily in first-time cheekpieces at Ascot 3 weeks ago. This is tougher and he needs to prove he gets this far, but his racing style should lend itself to this type of event.

KERDOS - (Goodwood, 15:35)

timeform
Two from 2 over 6f last term and cracking effort in the 3-y-o 5f handicap at Royal Ascot, beaten only a neck (possibly would have won had he not drifted left). Not ideally placed when well backed at York last time (Nymphadora first, Silky Wilkie second) and retains potential.

MAKAROVA - (Goodwood, 15:35)

timeform
Strong at the finish when gaining her listed breakthrough at Ayr in June and took a step forward from that ridden closer to the pace than usual when second to Equality at Sandown 4 weeks ago. Bit more needed again.

NADER KING - (Goodwood, 17:20)

timeform
Chased home Derby runner-up King of Steel at Nottingham on latter start at 2 yrs before landing maiden there on return. Right back on track when a clear second at Salisbury last time and, with more to come, he's worth backing to resume winning ways.

I have just had a count up

We’ve had 129 runners: 26 winners: 33 placed: RUNNING P/L - 6 points. **

** That’s win only, but we’ve had plenty of places which I’ve assumed will break placed horse even (had some big prices) if not better. And we just wouldn’t have backed everything blind. Can’t think of anymore excuses

Perfuse was dogshit, as was Moore honestly on him.

Even I wouldn't be panning Moore for Perfuse. Having backed a few against him in the race I was feeling quite good at halfway because it looked like he wasn't running his race. Ascot probably took a lot out of it. Hope it hasn't bottomed it but I doubt Moore could have done much about it.

It wasn't a very positive, proactive ride. Unlike the one on Above the Curve. Hoping for better on Nader King who is too short now really but 5s were available when prices came out.

Loyal Touch (5.20 G) was close up in the L.G.C. , bombed nto and gelded as a consequence.
Interesting that Frankie renews acquaintance, but it's in the lap of the gods whether he'll stay.
Small ew @ 16/1 4pl.

Well, he rode it positively and proactively at Ascot and it didn't work so it's understandable that he'd try and hold it up this time.

Maybe he just isn't that good a judge of pace

Seriously, though, all jockeys get it wrong when it matters at times. BRC's jockey and Hollie Doyle fvcked up big time in the G1. It just angers all the more when the money's on.

Doom is back! 7.30 Newm.

Not backable at 2-1, with the likelihood that injury kept her away from all early season targets. Plus there are half a dozen that could be anything. But this promises to be a race that will be worth analysing/following.

I thought that Vandeek looked rather special yesterday and it’s a shame the race cut up so much. Think he will be ok against much stiffer opposition and can’t wait to see that.

Completely agree. He looked special when I saw him in the paddock beforehand, just the way he walked around with a beautiful fluid action.

And back with quite a bang, too. All over the place in running, but kept straightening up and only beaten by a flying finish from the hot favourite.

Yeah, nice comeback.

Hannon on Purple Love before the race, not a million miles away from turning over both of them...

"Purple Love will get a Handicap rating after running in the 7:30pm."

I'd expect he didn't quite mean in that way!

BALANCE PLAY - (Goodwood, 17:20)

timeform
Progressive sort who wasn't hard pressed to open his account at Chester a month ago. More to come but he's likely to be pestered up front this time.

WON 7/2jfav
BALANCE PLAY came from a hot handicap on Derby Day at Epsom and has now won both starts since, taking a 5lb rise in his stride for Chester. He was helped enormously by the runner-up being trapped for almost 2f, but may still have won and is clearly a fast-improving 3yo. His trainer continues in red-hot
formRP

FLAG OF ST GEORGE - (Goodwood, 16:45)

timeform
Opened account at Newmarket in May and improved on that form when second of 6 in nursery at Windsor (6f, good, 10/3) 11 days ago. Can race off same mark and should go well again.

8th/12 9/2
Flag Of St George had shown improved form on his nursery debut at Windsor but he was a long way below that level and may not have appreciated the ground.RP

4th/12 6/1
Intricacy, up 6lb and back up in trip, had to wait to launch his run but briefly hung and couldn't get on terms with the leaders.RP

5th/11 33/1
Kerdos kept on again having been outpaced but doesn't yet look up to this sort of level.RP

MAKAROVA - (Goodwood, 15:35)

timeform
Strong at the finish when gaining her listed breakthrough at Ayr in June and took a step forward from that ridden closer to the pace than usual when second to Equality at Sandown 4 weeks ago. Bit more needed again.

4th/11 22/1
Makarova reversed last-time-out Sandown form with Equality, getting impeded by that one early but keeping on.RP

NADER KING - (Goodwood, 17:20)

timeform
Chased home Derby runner-up King of Steel at Nottingham on latter start at 2 yrs before landing maiden there on return. Right back on track when a clear second at Salisbury last time and, with more to come, he's worth backing to resume winning ways

11th/12 7/2jf
Nader King was another notable disappointment at the meeting for the Stoute yard, fading on ground that should have suited with a representative for the trainer unable to offer any explanation.RP

Tomorrow:

CHARTWELL HOUSE - (Goodwood, 16:10)

timeform
Didn't always look entirely straightforward at 2 yrs but there are no concerns in that regard on this season's evidence. Impressive from the front at Haydock in June and found just one too strong from 9 lb higher in a stronger handicap there since. Good shout.

FREE WIND - (Goodwood, 15:00)

timeform
Very talented mare who enhanced her fine strike rate in the Group 2 Middleton Stakes on return at York in May. Reportedly ran flat when fifth in Hardwicke at Royal Ascot next time but no surprise to see a much better showing back up in trip.

MR WAGYU - (Goodwood, 15:35)

timeform
Admirable sprinter who was a good third to Badri at Epsom in June and beaten less than 3 lengths when seventh of 27 in Wokingham at Royal Ascot later that month. Well below par at Thirsk last time, though, and likely to find a few too good here, too.

ORAZIO - (Goodwood, 15:35)

timeform
Low-mileage 4-y-o who looked a sprinter going places when landing 6f handicaps at Newmarket (good to soft) and Ascot (soft) during the spring. Ground may have been too lively for him when sixth in the Wokingham and may well resume his progress now back on an easier surface.

TIME LOCK - (Goodwood, 15:00)

timeform
In the frame in good company this year, not beaten too far when fourth in Lancashire Oaks at Haydock (11.8f, good to firm) 14 days ago. Return to this slower surface rates a likely plus and unlikely we've seen the best of her yet.

Balance Play was nice although I preferred Nader King and had the bigger bet on him Why? Because I thought the race was the full 12f and slight stamina concerns for BP. Winner is a winner though.

4th/8 10/fav Free Wind was the class act of the race but looked vulnerable conceding weight all round, stepping back up to 1m6f on ground this deep, and she couldn't cope. She's in the Yorkshire Oaks but that may come too soon.
Races such as the Prix Vermeille and Park Hill (2021 winner) are suitable autumn options.RP

4th/26. 14/1 Mr Wagyu hasn't been altogether predictable since his last win just over a year ago but he returned to form for a trainer who has enjoyed a fine time here this week. He'll reportedly head to Ireland for the Bold Lad, a race in which he finished a close third from an 8lb higher mark last year.RP

18th/26 100/30fav. Orazio, an unexposed sort who seems to like soft ground, attracted plenty of support through the day but got bogged down in these extremely testing conditions (confirmed by the trainer). He'll be worth another chance.RP

EHRAZ - (Chester, 15:38)

timeform
Smart sprinter who ran close to his best with blinkers added (retained) when 1¼ lengths fifth of 10 to Commanche Falls in Group 3 Hackwood at Newbury (6f, good) 15 days ago. Placed on heavy on reappearance. Thereabouts from the inside stall.

NATHANAEL GREENE - (Haydock, 18:45)

timeform
Useful handicapper who won here last season. Fine fourth of 19 in the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle (2m) at the beginning of July and not disgraced in another warm race at Newbury since. Acts on soft. Tongue tied first time. Much respected in this lower grade.

NOBLE STYLE - (Chester, 15:38)

timeform
Unbeaten in 3 outings at 2, including the Gimcrack. Failed to stay in the 2000 Guineas on reappearance but his 2 efforts over 6f since have been underwhelming. Too soon to suggest he hasn't trained on but needs a recent gelding operation and change of headgear to have a positive effect.

SECRET ANGEL - (Deauville, 13:33)

Tomorrow - will do both lots of results after.

SHAHBAZ - (Chepstow, 19:00)

timeform
Visored for 1st time, unlucky not to win when second of 9 in handicap at Yarmouth (8f, good to soft, 15/8) 2 weeks ago, never nearer after forced to switch 1f out. Back up in trip. Merits consideration.

Reckon he has ground, trip and jock in his favour,BJ but has a tricky draw to overcome.
Had a small ew on Feel The Need @ 16/1 myself.

3rd/6 5/1 -Ehraz ran only respectably, being pestered for the lead perhaps blunting his finishing effort.RP

timeform
Useful handicapper who won here last season. Fine fourth of 19 in the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle (2m) at the beginning of July and not disgraced in another warm race at Newbury since. Acts on soft. Tongue tied first time. Much respected in this lower grade.

3rd/11 9/2 - Nathanael Greene hasn't won in 13 months but this was a rock-solid effort in a new headgear combination.RP

4th/6 5/2 - Noble Style, gelded since the Commonwealth Cup, has major questions to answer after this display, keener than ideal in the first-time blinkers (replacing cheekpieces) but not to the extent that his response to pressure should have been so limited.RP
