Exotic Dancer heads Grand National weights
By Racing Post Staff10.32AM 10 FEB 2009
EXOTIC DANCER heads the weights on 11st 10lb for the John Smith's Grand National at Aintree on April 4.

Jonjo O'Neill's Lexus Chase winner has been promoted to the top of the handicap after PaulNicholls officially scratched Cheltenham Gold Cup victor Denman from the race.

The champion trainer had informed the BHA's senior handicapper handicapper Phil Smith on Sunday night to give him to adjust the weights.

Star De Mohaison would be a possible too Mel. Nice weights for my three fancies - Southern Vic, State of Play and Musica Bella, think they'll shorten up over the next few days.

Stamp - you've taken my 2 against the field:) Southern Vic and State of Play, the latter being my main fancy at this stage..

Possible non-stayer I guess but given his stablemates have the Gold Cup sewn up between the three of them they'd be stupid not to have a go - if Sir Robert will run Fadalko etc. in the race then SDM must be worth a shot.

I hope you two have a good record in the National ;)

Dreaper seems happy with Notre Pere's weight, I can't see why myself. 8lbs worse off with Cornish Set and no "top of handicap allowance". I'd be surprised if he turned up and absolutely stunned if he won. With all the stats and hoopla about the Grand national, the one thing you do need to be is well handicapped.

Notre Pere's weight would put me off him for sure.

I got on Big Fella Thanks at 50`s end of last week ,and very pleased I have. 20`s now and hardening. The jock was very impressed when he rode him last. Fancy this one guys, novice or not.

Are you a trader Roddy?? Would you be tempted to lay off even at this early stage,..or wait till the price shortens a good bit more?? A free bet at 30-1 or thereabouts isn't to be sneezed at:confused:

My fancy needs about 40 to come out. I've got work to do! Do you get a penalty for winning anything in between to get up the weights in the national ?

Yes of course it is better to trade some off,but not yet. I can see this being well bet now. Got my Betfair screen open though.

If they send him to the 4 miler I can't see him taking in the National/having a serious chance though Roddy - would trade out now at 22 or so if possible.

Silver Birch and King John's Castle look the standouts for me on a very quick look

Also Butler's Cabin has got in off a very low weight but I'm not convinced AP is ever going to win a GN - his riding style just doesn't suit the race either mentally or physically (imho!)

I didn't pay enough attention when Harry Findlay was talking about it on ATR yesterday, but I'm sure he said the GN was the target and it might mean missing Cheltenham. Could be wrong though, anyone else hear it?

I expect this one to be very well backed in the run up to Aintree, can see it going off single figures, I wouldn't be laying off just yet.

He spoke to Lydia on RUK yesterday afternoon and said that he probably wouldn't run him in the NH Chase as he didn't feel the horse was a suitable ride for an amateur.

Willies "shrewd" campaigning of Snowy Morning didn't reap the benefits he expected.I would still expect him to run out of his skin but possibly he has too much weight.
Southern Vic is very interesting.Talented on his day-his runs since injury haven't told us much.If Ruby rides him his price will shorten dramatically but you couldn't really see him winning with anyone else in the saddle.I do believe a certain forumite tipped him to win a Grand National on the morning of his first novice chase.

PN on Big Fella Thanks:

"Big Fella Thanks won at Doncaster and will run in the Racing Post Chase before Aintree.
Being at the front in small field novice chases wasn't suiting him so I think the National might suit him and he has a nice weight."

Would anyone like to guess or give some basis for working out what the lowest numbered horse to get in will be?
