Holiday Suggestions

Vienna is stately, clean, safe and definately not a young persons place

I warmed to the place more after a few visits though (some cities have opposite effect)

I see you are located in Brussels.... talking of small towns

Of course, it is a stupid remark to claim it is "patriotism".

But as is ever the case, you cannot counter the point and prefer a somewhat creepy remark instead

I used to be dead against London until I moved there, it is a fantastic city with lots to do. I prefer Berlin myself in Europe but as a tourist city, it'd be top 5 I expect.

Someone living in Brussels can't knock London, it'd be like someone in Middlesbrough knocking it! I've got a few Belgian friends and it's horiffic. There are nice towns in Belgium though, Leuven for one.

Where have you and clivex got the idea I'm knocking London? Sense of humour, please.

I didn't mention London myself because Galileo told us late last year he was already going there to watch tennis.

Ok You are excused

London has probably transformed itself more in the last twenty years than any other city bar Berlin. The south bank from Borough market to the london eye is now one of the great city walks.

It has its faults but the best cities do. The supposedly perfect cities that always come out tiop in the surveys can simply be very nice but a bit dull and forgettable

Vancouver being a good example

Geneva an even better one.

I lived there for over a year and never again.

No life in any way.

Been there Hamm. Dated, boring and dull....

Zurich is a little more interesting (fine art gallery), but everyone goes to bed at about 9

Agree about Hamburg, a city I will never tire of. It rarely gets too warm, and if it does, just take a boat trip round the harbour. A day-trip to Bremen, or the stunning medieval town of Lubeck -- in an air-conditioned, double-decker high-speed train -- is well worth doing.

I like all the Spanish cities but my favourite is Seville. Too hot in the summer of course but April/May is fine.

You're right, Zurich is better. Main reason for me is that it actually has its own population - Geneva is nearly 50% expat and has no identity.

A very good friend lives there and I've been there a lot. Do you mean the Kunsthaus? The collection is really great but an ex-gf has done various museum courses and would have a field day there in terms of re-organising it, and making different movements more distinct and the flow is a bit all over the place (maybe because they have art from all ages). Great musuem though (should emphasise that more!), and the best I've been too outside Paris and London.

Just as nice (though smaller) is the gallery in Winterthur (half hour from Zurich) - I think it's called the Oskar Reinhardt collection but I'm probably thinking of something else. Cool little town as well.

Indeed.

Ideal day can start in Borough Market at that Chorizo stand - 20 minutes queuing more than worth it; eat a month's worth of cheese inside an hour; lots of nice cafes around the market; Tate Modern next but stay away from burnt out cars and all the contemporary stuff!; lots of options further up at South Bank then such as Royal Fest Hall/South Bank/National Film Theatre etc.

I didn't think Zagreb was anything special but Split and Dubrovnik were excellent. Both cities are really beautiful with some lovely places to eat.

I thought that Amsterdam, Bratislava, Prague and Krakow were among the best city breaks I've had. I was a bit disappointed with Vienna, but I wouldn't want to put anyone off visiting it.

You're probably right - I only spent a day there and main memory was the architecture was interesting and should go back.

Dubrovnik is a little piece of heaven.

Yes and careful how you say it...

interesting point about lay out. Had similar thoughts. its a great building but a little confused. lots of Giacometti, whos stuff leaves me a bit cold too. but fine collection otherwise

Borough market chorizo stand! know it well. and Neals yard cheese etc. The whole place is a marvel. one of londond best attractions and that whole area has a unique appeal. The coffee at the monmouth coffee house is outstanding too

As for "burnt out cars" you should see the two aircraft at the Tate britain. A stunning installation...i promise you
