Even worse, imo, was Gallagher then labelling that "someone" as a criminal and a terrorist which of course prompted the question of "wtf did you invite a criminal and terrorist to a £5,000 per-head dinner with Brian Cowen?"

I was probably wrong about Gallagher and Fianna Fail; certainly wasn't aware of the fundraising business.

I didn't see it, but by all accounts he came off very poorly in the debate.

I thought McGuinness was as spectacularly good as Gallagher was spectacularly bad. Micheal D sort of paled into insignificance. Norris was at his jolly vibrant best. Dana looks like she actually has stopped campaigning but turned up because she likes to be on telly. Mary Davis is getting harder to like every time I see her. I only noticed Gay when he got indignant about the Dennis O'Brien question.

Gallagher will lose votes big time, but I'm not sure Michael D will be the main beneficiary. I'd guess many who would have voted for Gallagher just won't vote now. I think it might be enough to put Michael D over the line.

A complete own goal from Gallagher. I don't see what was wrong with admitting from the off he was involved in fund raising and more for the country's biggest political party - the association with FF was always going to be somewhat damaging but controllable with a competent PR campaign. The single act of mentioning the word "envelope" in the final debate shows such a poor level of judgement that he should be disqualified from running for any public office indefinitely.

The money was just resting in my account father

Granger - will you do the poster campaign for Bar The Bull in the next presidential election??

If Gallagher were to win and more embarrassing stuff is raked up from his past (there is bound to be more) is there any precedence for a President stepping down or can he / she be asked to resign?? What is the protocol?? We need to be ready at a minutes notice. Slimchance is appointed our "getting on" man as there has to be a punt landed!!

Is there any poll between here and the election. I still think Gallagher will top the first count.

He is strong favourite to get the most first preferences yet the market suggests he is likely to lose on transfers to Michael D. There is a lot of guessing going on here and here's another one, I have a nagging suspicion that Martin McGuinness could go very close to finishing second here at the expense of Gallagher. Is there any market on this where I can lose my money??

The pundits were saying on Sunday that it's extremely rare for the polls taken on the weekend before an election to be overturned, and all of them showed Gallagher with a big lead. He seems to have been well and truly done over last night, though, with about 750,000 people watching.

There won't be any more polls, Slim, they're banned in the final days of a campaign.

The more I think about it the more I think he's doomed. He came through as the stereotypical dodgy FFer who destroyed the country and are now objects of hate. He's probably lost enough of his vote last night to cost him. Any further issues, or hints of further issues and he wont even be second.

I think Gay Mitchell knows a little more about the money resting in the account thing than he is letting on. It would be very brave of him to pipe up with a mention of tax evasion unless he had something to base it on. Maybe he was just fishing. Or maybe, if need be, Seanie will have another bomb to face tomorrow.

For McGuinness to finish second he would have to get a higher first preference vote than Gallagher, given that he is not likely to do well on transfers from other candidates. In that case you could back the Higgins/McGuinness forecast at 11/1 with PP.

But I think you'd be mad to do so.

I really don't know. Polls never lie and I'm not convinced last night will have cost him that much ground.

Why didnt he laugh it off and start ranting on about dirty politics and making mountains out of molehills etc. He handled it very badly.

Because he seems to be a fucking moron, with more skeletons in his closet that he was probably praying wouldn't come out.

An example of what was going on in this country in the last decade or so;

My uncle was chairman of his local GAA club. The club was applying for a grant for construction to do with the clubhouse/centre at the pitch. So he was given the task of putting together the applicaiton. He is an intelligent man, so this application was put together well. He even spent a week going around the parish getting signatures from everyone, and had other people put together proposals as to things that would they might use the centre for outside of GAA.

Long story short, application went in, they were refused. When it emerged that nearly every neighbouring club had been given a grant he was disgusted, so rang up to ask where they had gone wrong. He was told his application hadnt scored highly enough to get into the grants. Fair enough, but he also asked could he have it back so he could see where he had gone wrong.

Out of 100, his application scored 0. It hadnt been so much as looked at he felt. He spoke to the other clubs and they told he had failed badly by not getting a consultation with, SEAN GALLAGHER. A few years later, oppurtunity came around again, exact same forms needed filling in, he approached it in the same manner, done everything the exact same, with one exception. At the final stage, it was sent through Mr Gallagher. €75,000 I think they recieved.

Del Boy unless they paid him there doesn't seem too much wrong with that.

He handled it badly last night but doing political fundraisers for parties is not illegal, although it probably should be. Sinn Fein showed themselves to be the snakes in the Grass that they are. I might vote for Michael D now just because Gallagher didn't handle himself well . He has done nothing illegal.

Spot on; I fully agree.
It wasn't the crime-of-the-century for anyone to be a grassroots member of Fianna Fail pre-2010.
All he had to do was play up and emphasize his association with the "non-toxic" wing of FF rather than allow himself to get bogged down with accusations of being an envelope-collector for Brian Cowen.

Except it's the land of the noon-time night there .....

It stinks.
