Jumpers Notebook

Yet another second after killing the price. So hard to take.

It's been such a tough jumps season and It's looking now unless I have a really good Cheltenham that I might have my fifth straight losing season dating back to the 21/22 jumps. That's very worrying. I've been keeping records since 1991 and the only similar run was 05/06 Jumps, 06 Flat, 06/07 Jumps.

The thing that gets me is last flat season was my worst ever but I had no real income and it affected the way I bet, I was going for doubles and multis rather that sticking with singles. I made so many errors and was either light on winners or didn't back trackers who won at decent odds. Hukum epitomised this in the King George. I fancied him loads and ended up putting him in a double with a Stoute horse in a Goodwood handicap who finished nowhere. Terrible mistake.

This jumps season not tracking Triple Trade and In Excelsis Deo when they were behind the De Bromhead horse at Cheltenham in October so I missed out when the former won his next race was the only mistake I've made, and I'm behind (although around level on trackers). There's definitely been a large slice of misfortune (A horse falling in front of Ned Tanner at Kelso, JPR One falling st the last at Cheltenham and Saint Segal doing the same at Ascot.) No idea how I approach next year's Jumps.

This is what you said , Euro, which was spot on (even down to warning of having mistakes in him - he had one again) and no surprise that he beat the favourite and second favourite, but maybe a surprise that he only started third favourite. So what’s to change?

Over the same course and distance Hurricane Highway off top weight in the novices handicap travelled and jumped like easily the best horse in the race and coming to the straight I was like how does this horse not win this but he landed really badly at the fourth last and sort of sprawled on all four limbs. That cost him 8+ lengths and he did well to pull some of that back. Evan Williams had him in the Silver Bowl at Exeter against Stay Away Fay so he's held in some regard and he did unseat there so he has mistakes in him. Well treated off 125 though imo.

RP Analsis:

Hurricane Highway, who'd surpassed his hurdles best when third over fences at Chepstow last month, ran another solid race in defeat, despite a notable error at the third-last not aiding his cause. He looks a strong stayer and he could develop into a marathon type.

My first thought given the trainer/colours was Welsh Nash to be honest. I really fancied this one and after dutching Theatre Man and Es Perfecto in the novices race at Cheltenham only to be done by a graded horse (in a time two seconds faster than the GA Law race) I felt I deserved a bit of a break.

Apologies for the recent whining, was in a bad place yesterday, was certain HH was winning that. The two mile handicap chase Sat at Sandown I've dutched In Excelsis Deo and Saint Segal for at 7/2 and 4s and the dangers (a horse that benefited from a pace collapse at Donny last Sat and a Venetia soft ground merchant have not been declared). It turns now.

No need to apologise, and good luck.

My two for Saturday are Le Patron who I almost want to get beat so they go for The Plate, but I'll still back him for Saturday anyway. Djelo's the danger.

Plus General Officer in the novice chase at Musselburgh, who pulled miles clear of the third when second behind Tahmuras the last day.

The General is open to a lot more improvement.

That's an interesting race. I can't for the life of me understand why Marble Sands is running at Muss' after jumping left all the way round Kempton before pulling up. I have a tracker (Grozni) running at Sandown and he was beaten by the McConnell horse over this course and distance last time out but I do think the Groz is a three miler (by Saddler Maker) so that sort of has me thinking that horse isn't up to this, a much better race by the way. Pumpkin has the fav in Monmiral but I've always thought that was overrated plus he is due a bad weekend isn't he with the flu jabs? I was hoping it was last Saturday, I wouldn't mind it being now even though I have a price about Hermes Allen (fancy one against his likely fav in the Juvenile on Sunday.) Might follow you in on the Officer.

Winner over hurdles in France and made a successful stable/chase debut at Hereford on return last season. Didn't go on as hoped after but he ran well when third at Cheltenham on return and backed that up when second there 7 weeks ago. Remains capable of better.starstarstarstarstar

Unseated Rider 6/4f - In Excelsis Deo had joined HARPER'S BROOK when unseating at the last, and may well have won given that one's previous for pulling himself up in front. He'll remain one to bear in mind, although his jumping is a bit of a concern (hit the second-last here too and also made late mistakes at Cheltenham the time before).RP

Smart hurdler is yet to fully improve upon that form over fences, having wind op before failing to justify support on return when seventh of 12 in handicap chase at Cheltenham (20.6f, good to soft) 49 days ago. Remains well treated on best form. starstarstar

4th/6 15/8f -Monmiral, who ran well for a long way in a strong handicap at Cheltenham on reappearance, was taken on for the lead and didn't see his race out, a mistake at the fourth-last not helping. He'll have to fare better to win a competitive handicap from this mark.RP

That’s a bit unfair, I think, he was moving well and had just gone odds-on in running when the bad mistake knocked the stuffing out of him - it was not a case of “not helping” but of finishing him

Fairly useful hurdler, including second to Collingham in this race off 3 lb lower 12 months ago. Arrives on the back of a couple of good runner-up efforts over fences this winter.starstarstar

7th/13 13/2 - Parisencore failed to build on his improved chasing efforts back over hurdles, a couple of errors in the last half of the contest not helping. He'll be of interest returned to chasing.

Nine Graces rather tenderly handled at Leopardstown 3.00. Be interested to see where he goes at the Festival.

Inis Oirr
looks a staying chaser to follow. That was a very good performance at Musselburgh following a step up in trip. Given he’s trained by Lucinda Russell, I’d be very interested in his future.

Aftertiming again - by me - but I backed both. I agree about Nine Graces which was my main bet in that race. Inis Oirr was also my main bet in the Musselburgh race (I also backed BMcQ, for the sake of full disclosure as well as the 66/1 shot) on account of its potential relative to its hurdles mark. It will go up 10lbs for that so might target the Scottish National this year or next. Lucinda Russell is one shrewd operator.

Probably Scottish this year and the Nash next? Via the Ultima?

Yes, probably.

It was a 122 first season novice hurdler despite being brought along gradually. I would have thought it would then become a 132 second-season novice hurdler before going on to be a 142 novice chaser then a 152 second-season chaser. After that, who knows.

They've gone chasing with it straight away and seems to have been well plotted up for this. A 10lbs rise will take it up to 129, which would get it into the Ayr race. A win there would probably take it up to the mid-130s for its second season over fences but it would need to go up to the low-mid-140s to have any chance of making the cut at Aintree, and to win off that mark it would probably need to really be a 155+ horse. That might not be impossible.

Useful on Flat in Germany and has been very quick in getting the hang of hurdling, winning extended 2m Taunton novice and running well from a good prominent position in Cheltenham handicap in December. Let down by jumping when the headgear was left off here last time so can get back on track. starstarstar

WON 11/2 - PANJARI, disappointing in a handicap over C&D on New Year's Day, hacked up in the first-time cheekpieces returned to a novice. Clearly helped by the added headgear, he wouldn't be anywhere near good enough for the Supreme but could be a likely type for the County Hurdle if connections can get his rating up enough before the festival.RP

Liari looks a horse to follow after impressively taking the Scottish Triumph at Musselburgh. He’s quite a big horse so Cheltenham may not be ideal at this stage of his career and possibly Aintree instead. But v likeable type and one to follow.

I backked Ballyburn and he's now favourite for the Supreme but I am in no hurry to back him.

I think the commentator may have been blown away by his perfomance but personally I thought by Festival stamdards it was pretty ordinary.

Fairly useful form shown when landing bumpers at Taunton and Fontwell in the spring and bolted up on hurdling debut at Kempton despite pulling hard. Excellent second in Newbury conditions event since. More to offer so he's a big player.starstarstarstarstar

2nd/10 11/10 - Secret Squirrel may look like a Palomino pony, but he's a pretty useful novice hurdler who gave Jeriko Du Reponet a race last time. He went down narrowly here after neither he or the winner had jumped the final flight well.RP

Had a productive 2022 over hurdles, winning 4 times, and better form when off the mark at the third attempt over fences at Uttoxeter before Christmas. Back up in trip now but stayed this far over hurdles. Has to be taken seriously up only 2 lb.starstarstarstarstar

WON 16/5 - SURE TOUCH was only raised 2lb for his win in a tactical race over 2m4f at Uttoxeter before Christmas. Ridden differently this time, he only began to get into the race towards of the back straight and went on to win pretty comfortably. He likely appreciated this better ground and is steadily progressive. RP

Hurdles winner who looked potentially smart as he made a winning return/chase debut at Newbury (16.4f) in December. Made little fuss following up in a match at Warwick last month, jumping boldly and going clear quickly. Big player in hat-trick bid. starstarstarstarstar

WON 4/6f - ETALON has created a fine impression since switched to the fences, clearly a natural, and this latest emphatic display is a strong indicator that he can hold his own outside of handicaps. He travelled and jumped with bags of enthusiasm and readily went clear when asked. He'll reportedly go for the Grade 1 novices' chase at Aintree in April.RP

3-3 over hurdles and has quickly made up into an even better chaser, winning Aintree novice handicap in November. Outstayed by Stay Away Fay in a 3m Sandown Grade 2 next time and possibly found Grade 1 test at Kempton on Boxing Day coming too soon. Obvious claims back in this company. starstarstarstarstar

WON 4/11f - GIOVINCO, who'd had an off day when last seen in the 3m Grade 1 Kauto Star Novices' Chase 51 days earlier, showed his class in this match and will surely be back up in grade soon, with the 7yo holding two Cheltenham entries. Plans for that meeting remain fluid for now.RP

QUOTES: We entered thinking we'd get an idea of whether GIOVINCO should run over two and a half miles or three miles at the festival and what we've ended up doing is setting him up perfectly to run in whichever race we decide. What I didn't want was for him to have a hard race at this time of year so it was perfect, although it hasn't answered the question! I like Choosethenews, I know he's well regarded and he looked very fit in the paddock so we weren't counting our chickens. But Giovinco has a lot of class and I was really pleased with him - Lucinda Russell, trainer.

Fell 11/4 - Ned Tanner, a Kelso regular, looked the principal danger to the winner when taking a heavy fall at the penultimate fence. He's capable on his day, but worryingly has now failed to complete in two of his last three starts.RP

Runner-up both starts in Irish points and looked a good prospect when making a winning hurdling debut at Ayr (16f) in November. Well below that level at Haydock since but remains with potential. starstarstarstar

4th/9 13/8 - Primoz, perhaps flattered by his opening Ayr win, again proved disappointing. He was returning from a break here though, so that was a possible valid reason for this seemingly below-par performance.RP
