Kauto Star

Not even the best in his own yard!

Ruby & Paul Nicholls would strongly disagree.

Good to know you’re still with us! How are you?

Good to know you’re still with us! How are you?

TBH The last year has been hell and I spent most of my time in bed with shortage of Breath due to Tuberculosis.

Usually you are on Meds for 6 months which cause all sorts of side effects like the aforementioned Nausea and lack of appetite.

It's took 10 months for me to get to the stage where most people start treatment now the Doc says I should finish around February....fingers crossed.

Last December just before I was diagnosed I was given a contract to build the biggest single house I have ever tackled

Luckily my Thai friend is a very good builder so I stayed in bed after discussing each stage and he ran the job for me.

I finished the house in August and profit in hand came straight up to my girlfriend village to finish our house.

The doctor I have is a TB specialist and I get more info from her than I did in the big hospital in Chonburi/Pattaya

Apparently I have a 2cm cavity in one lung which stops me from doing too much but I feel 100 times better than I did back in April

I am still 30kg lighter than I was but I expect I will gain some weight after treatment stops. My BMI is ok so I am not worried.

I sincerely hope no one on the forum ever gets TB. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

Thank you very much for asking Moe it's great to be alive

sorry for the Rant:lol:

You rant away, although a long side one of mine in comparison...... :)
Glad to hear you are coming out the other side even if it has taken longer than would have hoped, or expected. A grandfather died of TB so glad you're feeling better and back with us. :)

I was actually thinking of you the other day, Tanlic, so it’s a relief to hear from you. With the pandemic and stuff it’s a worry when people don’t post for ages. Take care. ( I think it’s because Sprinter Sacre is now available for hiring out for events etc and I thought to myself ‘I know someone that would like a visit from him but it’s a bit of a long way to go!’)

At Punchestown Festival on RTE Ruby and Davy were talking two mile chasers.
Davy just said he had never ridden any of the greats ,Ruby or Barry the men to talk to.
Ruby was adamant Kauto was the best two miler he ever rode, quoting his Tingle Creek victory when Voy Pur Ustedes was beaten at the Railway fences.
Some praise indeed.

That's interesting and probably true but I'n surprised Ruby would want to go there, had he been drinking:lol: Kauto actually achieved very little over 2 miles in comparison to the best 2 milers. Granted he won 2 Tingle Creeks but he beat Ashley Brook who won the grand total of 4 races over fences and Voy Por Ustedes who is credited with winning the worst QMCC chase in history.
Kauto's overall form at 2 miles was just a stepping stone to greatness and what he achieved at around 2 miles was pretty ordinary losing 7 or 8 times and nowhere near as good as Moscow Flyers or Sprinter Sacre.

Good to see you back and on the mend, Fist.

Was about to post something very similar. I'm not disputing Kauto's greatness but the long quoted comments that he was brilliant at 2 miles and 3 miles, alongside Ruby's about him being the best 2 miler he's ever ridden are hard to fathom.

Ruby knows infinitely more about riding a horse than I ever will but his form over 2 miles doesn't support the claims.

He won a class C novice chase from the good but not top class, Foreman in receipt of the weight for age 11lb allowance - something that Nicholls was a master of exploiting
He then fell and was infamously remounted to finish 2nd at 2/11 in a 3 runner Warwick Novice chase
On his reappearance in open company he was beaten off 149 when receiving lumps of weight in the Haldon Gold cup
He was then driven out to win from Ashley Brook in what is one of the worst Tingle Creeks I can ever remember
Then fell when favourite for the QMCC
He then put in an admittedly great performance for his second Tingle Creek but Arkle winner Vor Por Ustedes aside, it was a terrible renewal.

That second Tingle Creek is the only one which stands up to claims of grandeur IMO and I find it highly surprising that a man who rode Azertyuiop would say Kauto is the best 2 miler he's ever ridden

Douvan was rated higher than Kauto Star over 2 miles....He went off 2/9 fav for the qmcc when he broke his pelvis.Kauto Star went off at 2/1 for the same race and fell

Is that the one which McCoy heard Ruby saying 'steady steady whoa' or something similar, when McCoy's mount and everyone else's were flat out or gone?
Kauto may not have run at that distance as much as others, that doesn't mean he wasn't the greatest that either Ruby or anyone else had sat on. If he had not been so versatile, maybe he would have.

I tend not to take too much notice of what riders say about horses they ride/rode.

Piggott probably started it off when he said Sir Ivor was the best he ever rode. I watched the Sir Ivor DVD. He must be one of the most over-rated horses ever.

Every horse that passes through Ballydoyle seems to be the best they've ever had.

It's probably a bit like football fans remembering their own teams from down the years, claiming one side would have been the best then a while later saying the same thing about a different one.

The difference with racing is that the idea of ratings is to make it more possible to allocate a numerical evaluation to their ability and, if the methods are sound, they should enable comparisons across decades.

I'm still happy to accept that Arkle was significantly better than any other chaser before or since.
