Ladbrokes Trophy Chase. Newbury. December 2nd.

WPM interviewed by Matt Chapman on ATR is of the opinion, for now at least , that Total Recall is more an Aintree horse than a Gold Cup horse, reckoning he is 10 lb short of that class .
Whisper is bang there as a GC horse but there has never been so many young 165+ horses at the same time as there is now.
That could all change of course over the next few months.

Tanlic, by your own admission, Native River stopped “idling” and found more. You can’t have it both ways.

And even if Native River did idle, he didn’t do it to the extent that would put him 7lbs ahead of Whisper.

I’m actually fine with the difference of opinion. It’s ths suggestion I’m from fu*cking Penicuik that really pisses me off!!

Ruby on RUK this morning was on about him being a physically small horse who it remains to be seen will deal with 11 stone 10 on it's back if stepped into open company as opposed to 10stone 6 and 10 stone 8 over recent successes

Maybe one that goes on to stardom after winning the Hennessy but I doubt we'll see a horse giving virtually the entire field a stone plus, never mind winning it!

Tizzard is refreshing in that he isn't scared of running em' so that's one possibility if that stable continues to be fed high quality animals.

Horse needs to have the physique to carry the weight, concede the weight, want the test, and have connecfions with balls.

The combination comes along very rarely.

Running off 174 - No.

Note that Granger said running not winning. He was off 182 the year he came 3rd. Over half the field were out of the handicap including the two who finished ahead of him.

Not interested in 3rd. It's about winning.

Fair play to the boy for running.

Does anyone think we'll ever see a horse as top class as Denman running in the Hennessy in future?

Coneygree is as top class as Denman. Whether he is genuinely in decline or has a problem or is being brought along more steadily for something later on only time will tell.

Bear in mind that Denman got to run off a mark 7lbs lower than for his previous run so if any other top class animal is allowed the same generosity there's no reason why it shouldn't run. Coneygree, also 7lbs lower than its peak OR, is proof.

He's not - he may have been for that one season. But not anymore. Its a great run from Whisper though and surely he should be higher in the gold cup betting.

For what its worth I doubt you'll see many of Denmans class run in it due to the Betfair Chase and that Million bonus for the sweep. Some say Paul Nicholls had the Balls to run Denman in this which is fair enough I suppose but would he have run him in it if he didn't have Kauto in the Betfair ? The chance of any trainer having 2 horses where the 2nd best of the pair can win the Hennessy off such a rating is slim to say the least. Most trainers who have one they believe of that quality will go for the money 99 times out of 100 and what is probably an easier option to win the Betfair than it is to win the Hennessy off such a rating.

Not even for that season. Denman would have comfortably beaten Coneygree, I reckon.

Agree, Danny.

Imagine the joys of racing if the Million bonus incorporated a premier handicap race

This is a drum that I have been beating for a long time

Could do it with the 2m race series too and we might finally get to see some clashes of note

A 2m handicap chase to attract G1 performers, run perhaps at a fair track such as Ascot ?

It'd never catch on :ninja

Wouldn't that be brilliant?!
