Thanks GA.

Kirkless though has also won a Group 1.

As mentioned previously in this thread, i'm a really big fan of this horse. I think despite a big weight should go well in the Caulfield Cup, and seems a huge price at 14s. I hope Godolphin think he's then worth his chance in the Melbourne Cup as i think he's the ideal type.

Viewed winning the Caulfield Cup from stablemate, Roman Emperor. A very slow run race. But Bart Cummings truly the Maestro, 13 Caulfield Cups yesterday, and over 255 Group 1 winners.

British quintet in list of 42 for Melbourne Cup

BY AAP RACING AND RACING POST STAFF

7.22AM 26 OCT 2009

FIVE British-trained runners appeared in the list of 42 horses remaining for the Emirates Melbourne Cup in eight days time after the third declaration stage on Monday.

The Luca Cumani-trained pair of Basaltico and Cima De Triomphe, Godolphin's Crime Scene and Kirklees and the Ian Williams-trained Munsef make up the quintet.

However, Cima De Triomphe is far from certain to make the line up. Cumani last week described the BMW Caulfield Cup disappointment as "highly unlikely" to run with Saturday's Mackinnon Stakes the likely alternative.

Godolphin's stable jockey Frankie Dettori could be a step closer to making his mind up on his big-race ride.

"It's not confirmed, but it seems Frankie will come to ride Kirklees and Kerrin McEvoy will be on Crime Scene," Godolphin travelling foreman Tommy Strang said.

Dettori's best resultin the Melbourne Cup so far was aboard Central Park, who finished second to the Bart Cummings-trained Rogan Josh in 1999.

Cummings has six entries, with themaster trainer assured of three runners. Last year's winner Viewed heads the group ahead of Roman Emperor and Allez Wonder with Think Money, Dandaad and Naval Escort not yet in the field as Cummings looks towards a 13th Cup victory on November 3.

Former Ballydoyle inmate Changingoftheguard, who is now in the care of David Hayes, was given a searching solo gallop at the Sandown quarantine centre on Monday morning, his biggest test since he arrived in Australia.
The three-year-old suffered a slight setback last week with a foot abscess which burst on Saturday morning, and Hayes will wait until he works on Thursday to decide whether he runs in Saturday's Mackinnon Stakes or the Melbourne Cup the following Tuesday.

"That was his first decent blow since I've had him, he'll come on a lot for it," Hayes said.

"I haven't made up my mind yet,he's in good order. It was nice work but it's always hard to judge work when you're working on your own."

Final acceptances will be taken on Saturday, with the Victoria Racing Club to announce the 24-runner field and draw shortly after.

Hayes import to run in Cup

AFTER a week of uncertainty, former Irish stayer Changingoftheguard will have his first start for trainer David Hayes in the Melbourne Cup in seven days.

Following a meeting of his new owners yesterday it was decided that the highly rated four-year-old, who was purchased out of Aidan O'Brien's yard in September for an undisclosed seven-figure sum, will line-up in the $5.5 million race.

Hayes was keeping his options open by entering the Montjeu entire for Saturday's Mackinnon Stakes but by early afternoon yesterday, it was the Melbourne Cup or bust for Changingoftheguard as it emerged that he is almost certain to be balloted out of Saturday's weight-for-age race.

Despite being 10th in line for a Melbourne Cup start, the horse is 24th in line for a Mackinnon run. As there are only 18 starters in the 2000-metre race, there was only two options left for Hayes - the Cup or the paddock.

''I had a meeting with the owners this afternoon and we had been leaning towards the Melbourne Cup anyway and it sounds as if that's the only option left,'' Hayes said.

''I think he's a weight-for-age horse with a handicapper's weight (50.5 kilograms) and so we had been leaning towards the Melbourne Cup anyway '' Hayes said.

''He's coming along very strongly and he's really impressed me the way he's progressed since the abscess [burst].''

The four-year-old galloped strongly at Sandown yesterday only days after suffering a foot abscess.

''He's actually got a great foundation on him and I don't think the foot is a factor at all because he only had one morning when he didn't do what I wanted him to do," Hayes said.

Working by himself with Cox Plate-winning jockey Glen Boss in the saddle, Changingoftheguard worked over 1800 metres in winkers, running home his last 600 in a tick over 36 seconds, convincing Hayes that the Melbourne Cup was indeed a reality.

"It was nice work. I put the winkers on so that he didn't look around the whole way and he was a little bit keen for the first half of the gallop, but he went nicely and then stargazed late. He had his first decent blow since I've had him but he'll come on a lot for it I think. We're pretty happy," Hayes said.

But instead of completing his warm down under the weight of Boss or track rider Lizzie Jelfs, Changingoftheguard was walked by hand while Hayes and Boss dissected the work, raising some doubt about his wellbeing.

Boss has pinned his hopes of riding in the Melbourne Cup on Changingoftheguard but admitted that the horse's preparation had not been ideal.

"It hasn't been an ideal prep but there's no issue (with the abscess) now,'' Boss said. ''He's thriving in the environment and he's a real nice horse, I like him. I had another option [for the Cup] but I had to let it go to focus my energy on him so I hope he stands up to be counted on Thursday."

In a blow for South African trainer Herman Brown, Singapore Cup placegetter Bankable will not be entered for the Mackinnon Stakes as he struggles to overcome a hoof problem.

"He's got some heat in the off-fore hoof and we suspect an abscess is forming. We're going to nerve-block him this afternoon and try to identify the problem," Brown said.

Brown said veterinary investigations would determine the extent of the injury and whether Bankable would press on to the Emirates Stakes on Saturday week.

The international raiders will be represented in the Mackinnon by Luca Cumani's Caulfield Cup flop Cima De Triomphe, who is certain to take his place after a strong gallop under Damien Oliver yesterday.

Wearing blinkers for the first time, Cima De Triomphe impressed Oliver with his sharpness during the 1000-metre hit-out. The jockey said he was hopeful that the horse would perform on Saturday with the blinkers on.

Oliver also confirmed that he would ride imported stayer Warringah for Sydney trainer Chris Waller in the Melbourne Cup, but he will declare half-a-kilogram over the horse's 52.5.

He has run well in his trackwork. But personally I'd be worried if he is sitting at 24th place. Yes based on paper he is a guaranteed starter, for the moment. But the winner and runner-up of the Lexus Quality over 2500m and the winner of the LKS Mackinnon Stakes are automatically exempt from the ballot.

If he was mine, he would have headed to the Lexus Quality, to try and get an exemption.

Oh and forgot to mention the stewards do have the final say of who does and doesn't make the field for the Cup. So its at their discretion, whether Changingoftheguard will run Saturday night.

Galileo - I think that is factored into his price. Was around 30s yesterday on Betfair.

GA - Thanks for that information. I think I'll wait until after Saturday's races before I place any bets on him.

Unlikely that Zipping will be there after a really nasty incident in the stalls prior to the Mackinnon Stakes this afternoon (or the early morning as it would have been in the UK).

Miss Cumani (suny's fav) was part of the presentation team on the telly and Cima De Triomphe was a bit disappointing.

Just reading that Kirkless misses the race so Godolphin will rely on Crime Scene with Kerrin Mcevoy on board.

Yes, seems that after inspecting him, bin Suroor doesn't think KIRKLEES is the same horse he was in England. Was Charlie Mann in charge of getting him onto the plane?

Bart has his 13th Cup at his mercy, after yesterday.

His main chance, and last year's winner, Viewed, ran one of the best Melbourne Cup trials in a long time in the Group 1 LKS Mackinnon Stakes yesterday. He was coming back to the 10 furlongs from 12 furlongs, and also back to WFA. His run over the final stages, not being touched with the whip was just beautiful. All I could think as I watched the stallion glide easily and hitting the line fastly in the final 1/2 furlong was "Bart you really are a GENIUS!"

Last night at the barrier draw, the horse drew in 9. I really think Bart would be having the last laugh over this :D

Bart's second horse, and the horse I believe will carry him to victory, is the beautiful Montjeu 4yo stallion, Roman Emperor. Although he is drawn in 15, his form this spring has been strong, despite not winning yet. His major victory, to date, came in this years Group 1 Australian Derby over the 12 furlongs at Randwick. We know he likes a big track, and loves to come from the outside. So barrier 15 might work better in his favour, as he will come straight out, and unlike barriers 1 to 4 having the traffic come across like a tornado, or barriers 19 to 24 where the horses have to either go forward and waste energy by having to be pushed and shoved from pillar to post. Last start he was 2nd to stablemate Viewed in the Caulfield Cup, and running on late. The only query is whether he can run the trip of 2 miles. I reckon he will, and Bart is the Maestro.

Bart's third and final horse is the beautiful mare, Allez Wonder. She comes into this race as a dark horse, having won the Toorak Handicap over the mile, giving Michelle Payne her first ever Group 1 victory. Seven days later, the mare backed up to run 5 lengths 8th to her stablemate, Viewed. Last start the mare had to back up over 4 furlongs within 7 days, which was a major ask. She goes into this race at odds of 30/1, which look to be well over considering she is a Cummings galloper. There are concerns with her over the distance, however she is trained by Bart Cummings, did run 3rd in last years VRC Oaks over 12 1/2f at the same track, and her dam won the Group 2 Perth Cup over 2 miles at the same age, 4. I rate her strongly, considering the mares have dominated this race over the past decade. Bart has trained several mares to win and Michelle Payne is VERY hungry!

They weren't overly complimentary about the chance of Allez Wonder on the preview show I watched on Channel 7 this morning but most of the tipsters expect the other two to finish first and second and yesterdays' performance certainly suggested that a follow up for Viewed looks highly likely.

I was quite taken with the run of Master O'Reilly in the Mackinnon, too. Ran a similar sort of race to Viewed - lovely prep for Tuesday.

I was wondering about Allez Wonder, knowing nothing about Australian horses; she's got a good draw, too. Interesting to know that she has stamina on the dam side.

Was taken by two horses in the preps - both C'est La Guerre in the Caulfield and Basaltico in the Geelong made monster moves mid-race but flattened out, looked like their trainers had left quite a bit in the tank so those two at 20s and 50's will do for me :)

Raining quite heavily in Melbourne this morning so bear that in mind as the ground may change.

A lot of controvery over Mourilyan and his connections. If he wins, I know there will be immense displeasure from the crowd.

The weather is shocking there at the moment. I know one horse who swims in the rain, Fiumicino. Not sure though he can or will be able to run a strong 2 miles. But then again, the horse LOVES the wet and he was dour earlier this year in winning The BMW over 12f.

Invincible Spirit filly wins the first ( good sign of a stallion when he can get them down there too) Anything drawn high didn't have a chance.

Looks like Coolmore sold a banger. Changingoftheguard ruled out by the vets, lame.
