More Corruption?

Their "industry" if you will is "property development" - basically they buy traveller sites (with caravans, travellers etc. on them) and use physical intimidation to force them off the site, they then sell it on to housing firms to build houses on etc.

Look East (BBC news program) did a feature on them a few years ago and if you google them there's some very interesting news stories on the subject.

Heard the rumours and the exact jockeys names as G called them but still surprised that Greg Fairley and Jimmy Quinn could be involved...

They continue to work, Bar. Or, more correctly, they are allowed to continue to work. The Witchfinder General won't require them to appear before him until October this year.

Most evidence seems to be volunteered by exchange companies, where they notice curious patterns in the betting, tie up who owns what and note that the owners themselves aren't laying their own horses, but see that certain names/accounts appear to be fronting them. They flag up their interest to the BHA and their Security Dept can then ask - as it just has with another gambling owner who runs a telephone tipping service unofficially - to see phone records. You tie the owner to the front man or woman or plural thereof by phone trails, and review video clips of the rides in question several times. You call in the jockeys and ask them for their own phones, from which you might find a crossover trail between the fronts and the riders. You interview the trainer/s and see if their phone records show any trail to the fronts.

It takes forever to pull a big case like this together due to the multiple fronts for the owners.

The BHA Security arm does encourage anyone with a suspicion of wrongdoing to contact them. What's not to say there could be such intelligence coming in from other parties?

How can you call the fines hefty?

In any other profession they would be facing 4+ years in prison.

Er, what is not nice? The bans? The corruption? The fact you misquoted and then criticised SteveT for something he didn't write?

I've been involved in going for a touch by brining one along slowly and haing a good bet when the horse comes to himself. You don't have to stop a horse to do that. You may know he needs the race but there's no law against it plus horses can imrove out of all recognition after 1 or 2 runs. You won't get a straighter trainine than Richard Hannon's and his 2 yo's are a classic example of that..

So I'm all for owners having a go when the trainer says todays the day. The fact is more of these touches go astray than win so there's still a gamble involved. That to me is all part of racing.

To blatantly not try and lay a horse is not only about most stupid thing you can become involved in, it is also exactly the same as stealing , from me you and anyone else who bets.

It's well known companies like Betfair will not have their name tarnished and will stick in anyone in they think is at it. It doesn't need to be for large amounts either.

If laying a horse on course someone is sure to open their mouth and people being people it spreads like wildfire and it's only amtter of time before someine from the BHA is tipped off. So there's no way you get away with it in the long run.

As far as these lot go stupid as they are 2 years and 6 months? I don't know why the difference and don't care if they are found guilty then they should be warned off full stop and never be allowed near a racecourse or a horse again.

You could have been sitting at home and decide to have a life changing bet on one of those horses they rode and you didn't stand a chance.

They are greedy scum who care nothing for anyone but themselves and should be in jail.

Interesting point, G-G. I don't know the answer to that, so if you haven't found out in the meantime, I'll ask a contact on Monday at Plumpton, who is BHA Security-retained. Of course, if you don't hear from me, it'll be because having told me, he's had to kill me.

As Steve M says, the only way they can have access to content is through illegal means. They need the parties to submit records of calls and texts made and received, but not the content thereof.

If they really wanted to they could nab 60% of all jocks at some point,i could give dozens of examples but obviously on such an open forum could never go into detail.Racing would be in tattters it can't and will never happen, all you will ever see are these pathetic examples they will use occassionally.
In saying that its always been there and if your betting 100 races aweek then it in all probability won't have much effect on your living anyway!!
Just for the record DEFT was one of the most set up races i've seen for a while!!!!:lol:

"... all you will ever see are these pathetic examples... " - that's because, gigilo, they have been proved to have broken rules. There are loads of people who break all sorts of rules all the time, but who cannot be brought to book or announced to the public until their behaviour is investigated and proven. It's called due process, not conjecture.

If you know the 60% of jockeys you say are bent, you should be telling the BHA's Security Dept of your information, rather than implying you have some special insider knowledge. To encourage you to help clean up racing, the number for Integrity Services is 020 7152 0000, and you should ask to speak to Tom Astley or Sam Morris-Warburton. Let us know how you get on.

I gather there are some or have been some owners on here,at least a small % would know something of certain jocks or trainers which they themselves would never disclose. Not unless you want your legs broke anyway.

You can discuss the issue of the 60% bent jockeys you say you're aware of in complete, anonymous, confidence. I've yet to hear of anyone's legs getting broken these days - of course, it happens regularly in Dick Francis and John Francome racing thrillers, but we are talking about real life, aren't we?

What I don't get, gigilo, and this is not arguing with you at all, is why you would want to be such a dedicated full-on punter when you're pretty sure that the majority of jockeys are bent? How can you be sure that they aren't going to throw your money away most of the time? Or are you saying that you're in on the game with them, and that's why you're still punting regularly? ;)

No fella not at all,i don't use any info or contacts but just watching races and using times the way races are run when you're betting in a hundred races a week i'm willing to except that i've been given a non trier. If truth be known i would think 99% of jocks at some time or other have been on non triers,it would be a major surprise if they hadn't.I've said this to quite a few people who try to be selective that the majority of races form does stand up and while most punters think they're non triers there are infact other reasons.
What amazes me are the amount of people who must know about jocks/trainers etc and the scams they've got up to and yet they themselves won't speak up.I think that says it all really, most will have been involved with the betting side of it or like i said wouldn't want a good hiding.
