Newbury Hurdle entries.

Don't know if it's just Scottish but 'wide' attributes similar traits those of a 'Bengal Lancer' (ie chancer).

Once on holiday up north, we were at the breakfast table when the waitress came to take our order. My mother-in-law said that rather than the full Scottish, she just wanted egg, bacon and beans. I said, 'Give her the full Scottish and I'll have the rest of it,'to mutterings from Mrs O and Orchidette.

Sharp as you like, the waitress said, 'Ach, you're just a wee wide-o!' which was met with howls of laughter from the rest.

I've never been allowed to forget it.
 
Don't think he's been mentioned yet here, but fully expect Favour and Fortune to run a big race. Nowhere near the sort of price I'd be looking for, indicating too many already in the know. Shame.

Aucunrisque winked at me in the paddock pre-race 2 years ago.
L'eau Du Sud whispered ' something will do me at the last' last year, but I ignored him and went on the nose (at something like 34 (I think, memory is not what it was) on BF. How couldn't you! a ridiculous price.

What 'clues' will Favour give on the walk around, I wonder.

He might just (rather elaborately) say '2 miles, you're having a laugh. That Ayr form was an anomaly. I'm a Soldier Of Fortune. A good one mind, and that's why I got away with it last season. But my day will come, possibly in the Coral Cup or maybe further. But...if I can win here..and win well...you'll half wish you'd got on at around 20s for the County, Chaumi.'

Updated going Soft gd-sft in places going stick 4.0 so which is it ? Rain and snow forecast would you be looking for a mudlark for this ? I reckon you could do worse.
 
Needless to say I am the world's leading authority on the true meaning of going stick readings at different tracks and I'm 16 miles south of Newbury as the sober crow flies - I will believe there will be appreciable rain (4mm max, I'd say) when I see it.

So put your umbrella away, Daniel, "chillax" (check me out with my 21st century terminology) and await further developments - if any.

I don't know whether else would of noticed but if Gary Nutting flags up one of Alan kings it's always really well backed beyond the bits of tipster puts one up money. I'd bank my left goolie that he has a good connection at the yard.
 
Favour reportedly had a setback some time before the Ascot race. I don't think they were expecting fireworks there. The Betfair was always the next most logical target. And (so far) no rain. I'm in Feltham right now, not a million miles down the M4 from Newbury, slightly damp this morning but generally dry. Might be good to soft if nothing changes, AK has always thought Favour might like it more on better ground.

Then he turns up in the County off 137, hacks up and goes up to 151 for it and eventually 156. Irish runners filled the first four places and were nearly four lengths clear of a Hendo job.

There's no going map graphic so far at Turftrax but a current going stick reading of 4.0 points to heavy ground. They're also using frost covers which won't allow it dry out much and in any case drying ground tends to be more holding, according to racing lore. I think it might be quite a test of stamina at the trip.

I've just had a closer look at the final field and the intrigue of the race deepens with the card showing Freddie Gordon not riding any of his father's three but last year's winner Iberico Lord instead, with Freddie Gingell claiming three off old Aucunrisque and Charlie Maggs (5) still on King William Rufus.

I think what the big handicaps last weekend at Leopardstown showed was that the form book can sometimes be thrown out the window with well backed winners like Perceval Legallois, Backtonormal and McLaurey either making considerable improvement or being brought out of the woodwork and this race has a history of similar outcomes, especially where JP McManus is concerned.
 
The RP cards had Rex Dingle riding both earlier (very flexible). I see they’ve changed that now with the other Freddie G (Gingell) up on Aucunrisque. Freddie Gordon rides Press Your Luck for his father earlier at Newbury so a bit puzzling that he’s not on one of the three alright. I guess the chance to ride last year’s winner for JO and NJH is hard to pass up
