Don't know if it's just Scottish but 'wide' attributes similar traits those of a 'Bengal Lancer' (ie chancer).
Once on holiday up north, we were at the breakfast table when the waitress came to take our order. My mother-in-law said that rather than the full Scottish, she just wanted egg, bacon and beans. I said, 'Give her the full Scottish and I'll have the rest of it,'to mutterings from Mrs O and Orchidette.
Sharp as you like, the waitress said, 'Ach, you're just a wee wide-o!' which was met with howls of laughter from the rest.
I've never been allowed to forget it.
