And, believe it or not, I bet it ,as did many of us working for Holst in South Wales having been given a solid tip by some itinerant workers. Miracles happen. Ridden by Roger Poincelet.

Amazing that. Harry Wragg ran two in the race and had Psidium left in almost as an afterthought. He offered Lester the ride and Lester believed he would not stay.

Mme Plesch the owner had many horses in France so Poincelet got the ride.

A big day in Epsom Derby history.
1840 Little Wonder, the smallest horse to win the Derby was victorious. It was the only time Queen Victoria attended.

1874 George Frederick won at 9/1 on what was Prince George Frederick's 9th birthday.

1908 Signorinetta won at 100/1 for breeder/owner/trainer Chevalier Ginistrelli.
He was taking the dam to some fashionable stallion at Newmarket but she did not keep, only having eyes for a teaser stallion. Taken by their apparent romance, he let the teaser cover her, the foal being Signorinetta. She wonthe Oaks 2 days later.

1970 Nijinsky won from Gyr and Stintino on his way to Triple Crown fame.

1992 Dr Devious, named after Demi O Byrne won. He had run 2nd in Coventry Stks at 2 and had run in Kentucky Derby 3 weeks previously.St Jovite 2nd

2006 Sir Percy won in a terrific finish from Dragon Dancer, Dylan Thomas and the very unlucky Hala Bek

My father was sitting his final vet exams and had Swallow Tail backed to win Derby.
Swallow Tail was runner up to Nimbus in 2000 Gns and reckoned ST was better bred to stay Derby distance. So did Wm Hill breeder of Nimbus so he told his betting managers to take as much as they could on Nimbus. After the race Wm Hill reckoned the result cost him £250,000 but was delighted he bred a Derby winner. It was a double photo and the print showed a perfect example of "over extension of the knee " of the horse nearest to camera.

4/6/75
