On This Day In (Racing) History

Thanks Gareth. It looked like that. Having it on the 1st really compressed May, with Irish Guineas only a week before the Derby. The first Saturday after the first Wednesday was a better idea. Few horses run in the big Epsom Races and then go on to Ascot, those that do seldom run well.

Indeed DG.
My first taste of Royal Ascot and Pimm's No 1.
The St James Palace a 4 horse race and Cash was made sweat!
Speaking of sweating, it used be a long walk up to the parade ring and there was Big Mac, topped and tailed with a VERY Big Cigar ( to camouflage BO no doubt) holding court but making a very nasty noise when breathing.
He certainly would not have passed the vet!
Some intro to the best flat meeting though.

15/06/2008
The first day of a wonderful week for me.
I had little shares in 5 racehorses that year and 4 of them ran in a 6 day period. I got to all the meets and the final runner won at 16/1. Happy days !

In the final furlong of The George V handicap Greville Starkey fell from Ile De Chypre when leading. A high pitched sound from an ultra sonic gun was blamed.( Evidence given at a drug smuggling case some months later )

Day 2 at Royal Ascot. It had rained so heavily the under passage at the Railway Station was flooded so to alight from the train we had to pass through the train going the opposite way .

Henry Cecil won Royal Hunt with a Robert Sangster owned Pat Eddery ridden Imperial Ballet that did for Sangsters bet on his jockey John Reid being RA champion. Pat Eddery rode a treble to add to Placerville's defeat of Urban Sea the previous day.

1979: In an emotional Gold Cup in which Le Moss, ridden by Lester Piggott, beat stable companion Buckskin (ridden by stable jockey Mercer) to win his first Gold Cup. Trainer Henry Cecil showed in the winner's circle that his heart was with Buckskin.
Mercer gained some compensation in winning the Windsor Castle Stakes (Rollahead: Jeremy Hindley) and the Britannia Stakes (Welsh Chanter: Cecil).
He, later in the season, rode Le Moss to win the other 2 legs of the stayer's triple crown, and won all three races again in 1980 (despite having to give weight to the mighty Ardross in the Goodwood and Doncaster Cups).

Buckskin, Le Moss and Ardross! All giants of the staying world.

On this day in 2002 Sophisticat gave Aidan O’Brien a first Coronation Stakes, reversing French form with Zenda.

I loved Le Moss and the first horse I bought, Freddy Owen was by him. But generally not been a great line. But great horse, he was certainly that and have influenced my love of staying races, although I prefer the jumps
