On This Day In (Racing) History

Elementary won the 12f handicap the same day for Paul Green and JSB.

You're a man with a great memory, so you may recall this better than I do.

Elementary was once entered in a handicap at the Galway Festival in which there was no upper limit, either in terms of rating or weight to be carried. It wasn't a feature event, and his participation would have made the race very uncompetitive, so the handicapper decided to give him a crushing weight (well upwards of 13 stone I think), and Bolger took him out before the declarations. I'm sure I'm not imagining it, but would appreciate someone else remembering the race!

I can remember him being alloted 13 stone at Galway-I thought it was the McDonagh.
Would I be correct in saying Elementary made his racecourse debut in the Irish Leger.

Probably the Amateur Handicap.
He began over hurdles as a 5yo in 1988 and ran a few flat races end of that season.
His full race record is on the Racing Post.
I remember his Derby Day win as I thought he could not win a competitive handicap off top weight yet he hosed up.
Anyone who worked in Bolgers' 1985/86 will remember him as a big backward type who could run like the wind, hence when debuting at 5 started odds on in a Tralee hurdle

I was 9yo that day. Have a feeling that a Welsh bookie called Gomer Charles ( J M Charles )was involved in this. If not this one an earlier ringer plot. Served his time and was shot and killed on his doorstep when he got back home
