On this day in 1984, Habibti landed the odds in the King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot, but only just.

22 June 1934 the great Brown Jack (Steve Donoghue) won the Queen Alexandra Stakes for a record 6th successive year.

edgt, yes I almost put Sagaro in as the fourth. Just didn't overlap with the year or Le Moss, but that horse deserves to be up with them.
I have the Le Moss/Ardross Gold Cup on video. Wonderful race.

Shangamuzo wins Ascot Gold Cup for M Stoute and G Starkey, who is only the 3rd jockey to win Epsom Derby, Oaks and Gold Cup in the same year after Lester 1957 and Geoff Lewis 1971 (GC on Rock Roi disq)
Daniel Wildenstein peeved off with ride by P Eddery on Buckskin, saying he was "weak as Picasso" (lost in translation). He ended up removing all horses from P T Walwyn after.

24th June 1970 Brigadier Gerard (Joe Mercer) won on his racecourse debut, in the 5 furlong Berkshire Stakes

Today would have been Fred Rimell's 100th birthday.
 
A year ago today, June 25th 2012, Campbell Gillies and his friends made their way to Gatwick to fly out to Kavos. They arrived at the hotel around 3.30am, went out on the town and he died about 7.30am the next morning the 26th June, his birthday is the 27th.

On this day in 1935, Steve Donoghue landed the Irish Derby on board Museum, who was also a 100-1 winner of the Irish 2000 Guineas.

The last time a dead-heat was run off was on this day in 1930 at Newbury between Ruby's Love & Walloon, which was won by Ruby's Love.

26th June 1982 Busaco won at Newmarket to give Willie Carson his 2,000th winner in Britain.

Charles J Haughey's colours carried by Aristocracy, trained by R J McCormick. He was the sire of Limestone Lad. (Incidentally his filly Innocence is great grand dam of Cape Cross, sire of Sea The Stars so the Haughey influence is still about!)

On this day in 1993, Henry Cecil's Commander In Chief followed up his Epsom Derby win with victory in the Irish equivalent at the Curragh.

One of the few top Irish horses I never got to see in the flesh, due to appendicitis, lectures,practicals and frost!
That her main rival Buck House died of colic in a field 3 weeks earlier made life no easier at a time when Ireland had few top class horses, flat or NH.

St Jovite with the aid of 2 pacemakers, smashed course record under Christy Roche.
J S Bolger wins 5 races on the day. Peter Chapple Hyam speaks ruefully of being beaten "by the man who runs Irish Racing".
As Agriculture minister Joe Walsh spent 1992 at the races congratulating winning connections and JSB won more races than anyone else he may well have had a point.
This was the time Joe created HRI !

In 1990 Willie Carson rode 6 winners on the card at Newcastle including Al Maheb in the Northumberland Plate.

One year later Martin Pipe landed the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle with Tamarpour in the hands of Ernie Johnson.
 
Nowt to do with racing but June 29th is the day of the Haro Wine Festival in the Rioja region of Spain.

Everyone goes to mass and then throws copious amounts of red wine over each other.

Beats Glasto hands down.;)
 
In 2003 Alamshar beat the odds on Dalakhani in the Irish Derby.

In 2004 Les Arcs won a class 5 classified stakes race at Hamilton.
Two years later and he won the Golden Jubilee and The July Cup. What a transformation.

I attended my first Irish Derby.Troy won easily from Dickens Hill and Bohemian Grove, the latter ridden by Willie Shoemaker who rode a treble on Nazwa, Welsh Captain and Bishop Of Orange. He was some jockey. I got his autograph as well as Lester's.
A Jim Bolger filly broke the 5f track record the same day.
As Slinky Shorts would say "Jim was always a hoor for the speed "

On this day in 1974 trainer Harry Bell's Traffic Leader won the Edinburgh seller and was then saddled up again to finish 2nd in the ladies' race.

1st July 1992 Epsom racecourse held its first ever evening meeting. Local trainer Reg Akehurst won the first race with Mahfi.

The Spindrifter Stakes at Pontefract today is in commemoration of Spindrifter winner of 13 races in 1980, 3 of which were at Pontefract.

1st July 1987 Classic winning trainer Mark Johnson sent out his first winner as a trainer when Hinari Video won.

On this day in 1990, Salsabil scored a memorable victory over some smart colts in the Budweiser Irish Derby at the Curragh.

On this day in 1989 Henry Cecil's Old Vic led home a British 1-2-3 in the Irish Derby beating Observation Post and Ile De Nisky.

There was a scare about Old Vic having what looked like a warble breaking out in the saddle area. They used a large foam pad with a hole cut out so as not to discomfort the horse.
Elementary won the 12f handicap the same day for Paul Green and JSB.

Mozart won 7f 2yo maiden from Speirbhean.
Damien Oliver won Railway Stks on Honours List for Ballydoyle while on a busmans holiday.
Meanwhile at Saint Cloud Montjeu wins Grand Prix ridden by Cash who was memorably quoted saying the last time he travelled that fast was sitting on Concorde!

Dylan Thomas riddenby Kieren Fallon run away with Irish Derby from Gentlewave, to maintain an unbeaten record together, a record they maintained through to Prix De L'Arc.
Railway Stks sees Holy Roman Emperor win from Drayton, Excellent Art and Creachadoir with Espartano toiling despite the assistance of C Soumillon.
Celebration Stks won by Mustameet, a smashing Maktoum/ K Prendergast horse by Samh (USA) who won a string of Group 2 and 3 races that year.
