On this day in 1997, One So Wonderful stayed unbeaten when winning the Atalanta Stakes at Sandown. A year later she won York’s Juddmonte International.

On this day in 1991, Sir Mark Prescott saddled his first Group-race winner in Britain as Chicmond landed the Solario Stakes at Sandown.

30th August 1969 Henry Cecil saddled his first Goodwood winner, Rohays, in the Wills Embassy Maiden.

Welcome Gift was left at the start in a Gatwick race. A hot fav, after a Stewards Inquiry 21 yr old jockey Charlie Smirke was warned off and did not get his licence back for 5 yrs, even though Welcome Gift acquired a reputation for delaying at the start.
Shades of Snow Queen ! C Smirke on his return won 1934 Derby on Windsor Lad, repeating the dose in 1952 "What did I Tulyar! " and 1958 Hard Ridden

Got my first and to date only taste of Laytown races.
Some experience by the sea with crowds,hurdy gurdys and horses.
Feature race won by Nina claiming 3lb on Rockazar.

Saoirse Abu follows up her defeat of Henrythenavigator in Phoenix Stks by winning Moyglare at 13/2 from odds on Listen from Ballydoyle.
Benbaun defeated Dandy Man in Flying Five.
Baron D'El won his second Curragh handicap in a photo from stable mate Eight Up.
On my way to the races I encountered Paul Carberry at 11.40 at pedestrian lights in Johnstown, Looking pale and wan wearing two or three jackets it was odds on he would make the first at Killarney.
He got there, won the first and won at least another: some jockey.!

On this day in 1986 Phil Tuck equalled the record of 10 consecutive jumping winners when G W Richards Doronicum won at Southwell.

Classic Fame wona 2yo maiden for Classic Thoroughbreds plc, a new owner/cash cow for Ballydoyle. i believe he was their first winner; he won National Stks to become their 1st Group 1 winner a few weeks later.

Polonia showed she was really a sprinter by winning Flying Five at Phoenix Park ridden by Stephen Craine. He teamed up with JSB 5 years later on St Jovite in King George VI and QEII Stakes.
Noora Abu won her 11th race.
Sweet Charmer won the Bumper for Pat Flynn at a time when Bumpers were added to flat race cards to guarantee a good betting turnover. (They could reintroduce that idea)

On this day in 1991, Arazi justified odds of 1-5 to slam the field in the Prix de la Salamandre at Longchamp.

8th September 1970 2,749 racegoers turned up for the final day's racing at Alexandra Palace. George Duffield rode the last ever winner there, Acrostole for trainer Bob Smart.

One of the very best races ever in Ireland as Fantastic Light and L Dettori just defeat Galileo and M J Kinane in Champion Stakes.
To my eyes MJ thought he had Frankie covered all the ways up the straight but Frankie had a little up his sleeve; a truly wonderful race.

Henry Cecil's Connaught Bridge wins the Twickenham Stakes (£7015) at Kempton on her final outing to round off a hat-trick of wins (adding to the earlier Nassau Stakes (£17,730) and Yorkshire Oaks (£28,620) wins). Sold relatively cheaply as a yearling by the Burton Agnes stud, this filly was bought by Mr H Barker who enjoyed 4 wins with her (2 as a 2yo). Prior to this last race she was bought by Mr P Harris and became one of the Pendley Stud foundation mares. She was the Champion Filly of 1979.

She went on to be the granddam of Overturn, Dora Carrington and Primo Valentino.

On the 9th September 1882 racing took place for the first time in the 1,000-acre setting of Gosforth Park better known as Newcastle Racecourse.

On this day in 1988, Minster Son, ridden by Willie Carson and trained by Neil Graham, upset the odds-on Diminuendo in the St Leger.

In 1990 the Paul Cole trained Snurge became the first maiden to win the St Leger in 77 years.

On this day in 1969, Ribofilio completed a quartet of Classics in which he started favourite and failed to win when second in the St Leger.

On this day in 1982 Touching Wood proved stamina was his strong suit when he ran on strongly to win the St Leger.

In 2002 Tim Easterby's Bollin Eric won the St Leger to become the first Yorkshire trained St Leger winner since Peleid in 1973. Bollin Eric was Tim Easterby's first classic winner, at only his second attempt. Mark Johnston's Bandari was 3rd.

Cut Above won St Leger at 28/1. Odds on favourite Shergar finished 4th but resealed his place in history by being kidnapped in 1983.

User Friendly won St Leger for Bill Gredley/Clive Brittain/George Duffield to follow wins in Epsom/Irish/Yorkshire Oaks. Just pipped in Arc next start.
