Road to the Gold Cup 2011

I thought he was going to win by a street turning in so the wining distance for me was disappointing.

.
"I wasn't very pleased with my riding towards the finish. I would never want any young jockey to do what I did," he went on.
"I put the race to bed, but when I sat up on him it was like a car going into neutral - he really pulled up.
"I stopped riding about 100 yards from the line and was looking after the horse, but we should all learn and push out more to the line.
"On soft ground like that as soon as you drop the accelerator they can go down in gears very quickly."

I think what it looked like was exaggerated by the terrific speed at which TIDAL BAY closed on him, though. Makes one wonder if TB had been a weeny bit closer at the last, if he'd have nicked it, or whether IC would've found enough to have staved off the challenge - given that he was fully ridden out. Fascinating little finish as it throws up a couple of questions about those two meeting again.

Tidal Bay will only beat Imperial Commander if they stick a photo of his nice warm stable in front of him a la carrot. I find it hard not to love a horse like that! [Given that he supposedly eats people for breakfast, you think he'd have the sense to run really well for as long as possible; he is not going to be a childs hack when he retires....]

I've moved in for the 12/1 on Denman for the Cheltenham Gold Cup. As it is likely to become apparent following the Hennessy that the Gold Cup is again wide open to him, this is the one to be with. Impressed as I was with Imperial Commander in the 2010 Gold Cup, they will all be more worried about Denman than anything else if he does a job on them at Newbury on Saturday... He can lose the Hennessy and still win at Cheltenham. The largesse of Paddy Power is overwhelming.;)

"The largesse of Paddy Power is overwhelming".

and they'll allow you up to £3.50 at the price.

Subtantially more than that Laurence!... and if you still can't get enough on Ladbrokes and a couple of others are offering a similar price. You will have no trouble in placing decent sums at double digits, I assure you.

He just has to hope the real Kauto does not turn up .

The better horse at Cheltenham is the bigger odd. It rarely happens that bookmakers give it away... have what you like at these prices... he'll be down to single digits after the Hennessy.

Is the better at Cheltenham though - Ks has 2 GCs to his 1 . He also had a very genuine excuse last year - that mistake would have finished most horses long before he crashed out .

The question is are they both just getting on a bit now .

Well its 2 - 1 to Denman vs Kauto in the Gold Cup. Denman was of course busy winning the RSA by 10 lengths when Kauto won his first Gold Cup.

Yes they are both not getting any younger, but they are not too old for Gold Cup horses and 12/1 is very big.

12/1 is indeed a price; if Denman runs a big race (which is very likely, I think he can win it again) then his price will be cut by a fair bit for the Gold Cup.

Incidentally, by hovering over the i on the betslip which will give the maximum bet they will allow me, I've discovered that Paddy Power will lay me a maximum of £35.74. On the Gold Cup. In November of the previous year. Bookmakers or dressmakers?!? SteveM - you must have an A1+ account to be able to get a load on!!

I can get exactly ten times what you can get on SL. So they'll lay my account to lose £4289.04, it seems a very strange amount, how do they calculate it ?

God only knows - you'd have thought that in tossing around with pissy amounts (74 pence????) they'd have an exact maximum liability worked out so it would work out as being a maximum liability of, say £400, which is the system most bookmakers software works to. I was a maximum liability of £250 with Stan James for a while and the office manager told me this whilst I was trying to back something ante post (for the Gold Cup again, on Denman, the week before the Hennessy, strangely enough!!!) - after a banter (he was my old boss) he laid me a tenner and pointed out that "I'm being reasonable - strictly speaking, according to your tag, I should only allow you a fiver......."

there is a difference between fitness FTO and fitness after a couple of months though

they aren't going to have him GC fit today as they don't need him to be..he had 2 stone in hand today..so leave a stone or so of hardening up for the next few months

i think its really hard to judge these top horses in November...a couple of seasons ago folk were saying KS were done with when he just pipped Monets in the handicap..a month later and he was a different animal

it was tiring ground today..and the jockey wasn't exactly hard on the horse..it would have been difficult to be hard on him when jockey was looking behind so much

Agreed EC1. He should improve if all is well with him.

He got a little warm on his neck beforehand and his coat was quite dull when compared with how he looked there last year.

Apparently, he cut his near fore and will miss a bit of work because they don't want it to get infected. If he misses no more than few days' work he will go to Kempton but any more than that he won't. (Personally, I would rather he didn't, but that's not my call, thank Heaven.)

I don't have an account with Powers after a dispute over a customer service issue.I had won a couple of hundred off them in a month or so and got the message that they didn't really want my business.
Apart from Betfair the only account I have is bet 365.I know they get seriously slagged off but they have laid me some decent bets on an account that is profitable.

Crikey, they've always been abysmal for me - then again, two of my former colleagues are traders there! That said, I've done the 'bet max' test with them and they'll lay me a maximum of £75 @ 10/1 on Denman for the Gold Cup - more than double what Powers will accomodate!

Any winner I ever backed with them was in a high profile race and I avoid snide ew bets these days as it doesn't seem to work for me.
The best punter I know reckons they are grand until they decide they don't want you.

I walked into the shop where I work in the City (they rarely restrict bets there... unless very big). Ladbrokes also will freely lay him.

Went back into the same shop on my way home tonight. Denman was still easy to back at 12s for cash.

I'd take a different way home from now on Steve - did you see his run at Punchestown this year - I know McCoy was up to his usual theatrics but this horse is not in love with the game anymore - a wonderful wonderful specimen but his reserveless courage in doing what he has done has left a mark on the horses soul! The new King will not be dethroned!
