Road to the Gold Cup 2011

Would love to see them grasp the nettle with Tidal Bay and front run him on Saturday as think this could do the trick with him. I'm always a fan of folowing horses at certain times of the year and he won the cleev last year on the same card beating Time for Rupert if i remember correctly so he will certainly be carrying some of my each way money.

He's got such a clear opportunity here that I think they'll give him every chance of running over his field (albeit not necessarily from the front). There will be no excuse for bad positioning here.

Tidal Bay is horse that can be beaten in any race any day, he is not one I would bet.

...which is presumably why I've got 5/1 on him. :)

He's much maligned and a very clear and straightforward option on this particular occasion. You would in fact be a bit silly backing anything else in the race, especially at shorter prices.

Use of the terms "Tidal Bay" and "straightforward" in the same sentence (except when separated by the word not) isn't actually legal, is it?

I hope Time for Rupert does not run in the Gold Cup this year . I know he looks a super jumper of a fence but so was Gloria Victis ( even if Beefy wasn't ) and look what happened to the last pair of top novices to run in it .

:) like I say Rory... "much maligned". He'd been unlucky and had rounds of jumping where he has had lapses of concentration, to be sure. But he still has a great engine and receiving weight in this he'll be able to boss the competition and not be taken out of his comfort zone (which is when he does make bad blunders).

I backed him in the Arkle and the Cleeve (in which he also received weight and in which he thumped TFR) so he doesn't owe me anything.

At 5/1 I can sit back and watch him prove the point.

But the RSA price factors in the chances of getting injured in the next 7 weeks, and the chances of him being switched to the Gold Cup if he pisses up.

Is 6/4 not skinny when he has to give horses rated up to 5lbs his superior 3lbs and though although Punchestowns gives him 2lbs, he must have as much scope for improvement as TFR. If he wasnt such a monkey Tidal Bay should be the 6/4 shot.

If my Auntie had balls etc, OTB.

Tidal Bay was a horse to back at 14/1 when returned to hurdles for the first time in an age. Ignore his staying-on effort against Imperial Commander last time out, and you're looking at a horse that hasn't even been competitive in a steeple-chase since 2008. The last horse he beat over fences was Rimsky, and he is 3 wins from 14 in the last three seasons; two of them over hurdles.

6/1 Tidal Bay my peachy arse. Backing him is tantamount to sleep-walking over a cliff - never mind doing it willingly.

PS. Good man, Steve - just having the craic.

Grasshopper - I am not for one second disputing the fact that Tidal Bay is a bet for the deranged - TFR is not a 6/4 shot - 5/2 you could consider a bet but 6/4 no way!!

In fairness to Tidal Bay he is most probably a hound as something is hurting him somewhere - he certainly jumps like he's buggered somewhere and the way he carries his tail is often an indication of the same. I know connections have given him all sorts of treatment for this and that but I'm sure there's something wrong with him, most probably in his back.

Tidal Bay in a small field where he can boss these others is a stone cold sober bet with a better chance of a return than the two ahead of him in the market. What would be "deranged" is to bet against him on these terms with two short priced horses that are no value.

Tidal Bay has won 11 times and been placed 11 times in 27 starts and he's won four times at Cheltenham and been runner-up twice. The question really is - when he is also clear best on the terms - is it not more deranged not to back him at around 5/1!

Using Nacarat who has run 4 very consistent races and The Tother One 3 consistent races

Charlie Hall
Nacarat 158
The Tother One 154

Betfair Chase:
Imperial Commander 168+ – wasn’t 100% as 1st run of the season and gold cup main aim
Tidal Bay 166 – matched his career best
Planet Of Sound 158
Nacarat 156

Hennessy
Diamond Harry 168+
Burton Port 167+
Denman 178 was trained to peak for this race but worrying signs for me it was one hard race too many for a horse his age.
The Tother One 152

King George
Long Run 177 I’m not giving either of the Henderson runners plus’s as they both love Kempton and trainer had them at their peak – the question is can they produce that form or better at Cheltenham?
Riverside Theatre 163 – see above
Kauto Star 156
Nacarat 156 distance was exaggerated because he set a suicidal pace for his ability and jockey wasn’t hard on him after mistake at 2nd last I think had he of paced himself better he would have finished upsides a very under par Kauto Star

That’s how I see it – not really done this before so feel free to correct it – but my minds made up and it's way past my bedtime.
