Rolling Stones at Glastonbury

Oooh, that's a reminder.
Great album that was, Sticky Fingers. Those four albums really are a rock solid canon -- Exile, Sticky, Beggars and Let It Bleed.
L.I.B. is my own personal favourite -- only track I skip is the overlong Midnight Rambler.

Tanlic, respectfully I reckon the point that you're overlooking is that the Glasto performance was a poor effort by old men trying to reprise the rock 'n roll classics of 40 years ago. Nobody's dissing the heritage of the Stones in their magnificent prime, but tha6t performance last month was an embarrassment. Simmo said that he would be angry if he had paid a decent wedge to see that effort; I cannot disagree.
 
they were an embarassment live in the late 60's Icebreaker...they even had to scrap showing the Rock & Roll Circus film in late 68/early 69 as the Who blew them clean away on that show.

they were well overshadowed in the 70's by a number of bands

they have longevity going for them..thats all really

I caught a number of reviews in the press of their Hyde park performances the other week and they were raving about them. That's heir opinion and being someone with just a passing interest in rock I'm not going to judge.

You can say that ec but their music is not really in the same category as zeppelin and so on. Hard to believe that tastes in some of that prog rock stuff would overlap with exile on Main Street. Bit like comparing genesis with Springsteen or something

when the stones audtioned for a guitarist to replace Brian Jones..Richards asked Jeff Beck to audition...Beck went along and played with them...afterwards Richards says to him..what do you think?...Beck answered...give me a ring when you get a rhythm section.

Aah come on, EC man. The Who ( R.I.P. Keith and Ox, btw) as a live act could blow anybody away -- as evidenced so many times from Live Aid, Live8, Concert for New York etc. Yer setting a high standard when using The Who as a benchmark, fella! :)

I do agree tho', that the Stones as a live band -- even back in the 70's tours did not cut it as being the "greatest live band in the world" (what a sham claim that was). Jagger is imo a poor vocalist and always was ( there are cryptic stories of the rest of the band being downright angry with him for being more style than substance when on stage).
But, the issue is that the Glasto performance hit an all time low in the context of the Stones other and earlier concerts.
I thought they were dire. It was a kind of travesty, and a caricature of their fabulous vinyl heritage.

Okay, it's a half-right ........... Watts is as useful and as animated a drummer as a dressmaker's mannequin. :)
But it's half-wrong in that Bill Wyman is a very, very under-rated bassist.
Tracks like Tumbling Dice, Sympathy For The Devil and many more demonstrate Bill's bloody fine contribution.
 
Opera is loud and string quartets are not. Doesn't make opera better :)

Vic reeves is loud. Colin Murray is loud. Russell brand shouts

And they are all cnts
 
Who else would have made a greater fist of their material than jagger? He's no marvin Gaye but most rock vocalists are ordinary IMO. Not a form that lends itself to range and subtlety admittedly. Bowie is terrible.

Watts is a top class jazz and r&b drummer.

Must admit if there's one rock guitarist who had clear wonderful talent it is Clapton. You posted a clip a while ago which was real swinging blues stuff . Was good even if its far from my fav instrument

And icebreaker. Marcus is a superb bassist.

But don't so many in that business think thing this fella was the most brilliant talent of them all? I think this is an absolutely beautiful track. Not a wasted note and not a more too much and wonderful subtlety

Rock & Roll is a loud genre Clive..Rock music even more so... being loud doesn't make someone good...i never really said it did.

I grew up listening to the Stones Beatles...all the Liverpool scene from 63 onwards...loved it...I love a lot of Stones songs...but imo the best rock n roll band title has never belonged to them imo...they were too sloppy live for that to be the case. They got well left behind from 74 onwards as well

Icebreaker...in 1968 The Who were just on the cusp of morphing into the band you saw at Woodstock...they weren't the best live Rock band then imo...Cream were arguably the best live rock act..musically in 67 & 68.. in the world. The Who were always about power chords and energy...visually probably the best for sure..and from Woodstock onwards they were possibly the top band...although imo Zeppelin ruled the 70's with 4 or 5 of the best Rock albums ever made.

I listen to a lot of Stones songs...but won't entertain live versions..i just have never rated them...am surprised you didn't rate Glastonbury but assume you think Ya Ya's album is better.

that Clapton stuff you liked i think was the South Bank stuff from the 80's in Ronnie Scotts club..he really tore it up with Buddy Guy on stage with him...a lot of his other stuff from the last 40 years i can take or leave. His best was with Cream and Derek & The Dominoes imo.

Peter Green...what a talent...the album with John Mayall...a hard road is superb...and early Fleetwood Mac is really raw stuff...what a shame. I saw him live in the early 90's when he was first playing again in a small venue with his Splinter group..it was really sad as he had another guitarist helping him out...the drummer was Cozy Powell that night
 
Kids i knew at school who were into genesis always seem to be fat bastards


Reminds me of a very tubby young bloke who i worked with a while ago. He always bought designer gear (or so he thought) a size too small so his gut was always spilling out

His fav brand was French Connection and he bought this tee shirt with a big FC on the front

so did everyone else..its an old chestnut usually grabbed at by people who ignore the that fact bands they like did the same

zep changed the face of music and themselves created complete genre's of music..very few bands will ever get near them...and they did it with very little publicity...unheard of an industry where people will do anything for exposure...they did exactly the opposite.

Really? I can think of an awful lot of music that was complteley untouched by zep. I know rolf Harris covered stairway to heaven but thats about it

Only group whos influence went right across boundaries is the the beatles of course.

And were zep all that original? in the sense that James Brown, beach boys and bowie were say?

Not knocking them because they were clearly good at what they did
