Tattersalls Gold Cup

Conduit and North Light were both turned over in the Brigadier Gerard on their 4-y-o reappearance for Stoute with a Group 1 penalty. Don't look to have much running for me, but I imagine I'll be against Workforce in the week.

I'd agree, he doesn't look a certainty. I'd guess he's about a stone better than these, but has to give them half a stone. Clearly best on the numbers but won't be busting a gut.

Interesting booking, DJ.

What do you make of Elusive Pimpernel? Heard you on the radio the other day saying that the Dunlop horses tend to come on a bundle from their first run; with that it mind his run in the Earl of Sefton was pretty promising. I've always had it in my mind that 10f would be just up his street as well.

That has certainly been that pattern with them so far this year. Think he's a really interesting horse and should be better around 10f than at 1m the way he races. With doubts about Workforce because of the trip/penalty, Jan Vermeer because of the absence and Sri Putra because of his attitude, Elusive Pimpernel looks a solid place proposition. Will need to improve, but should do at the trip I think.

A really good card all told with Magic City out against against the Johnston 2-y-o that beat him at Windsor.

Jan Vermeer was able to win first time out last year carrying a seven pound penalty.

He might be forward enough to give Workforce a race of it especially in receipt of seven pounds.

Hills Go (So enjoy your £12.50 EWs)....

Workforce Evens
Elusive Pimpernel 6/1
Jan Vermeer 6/1
Afsare 8/1
Cavalryman 12/1
Black Spirit 14/1
Sri Putra 14/1
Distant Memories 20/1
Poet 25/1

I can get on to reasonableish levels (not as good as Paddys or Lads) in shops but Online and on the phone, they are beyond a joke.

I do most of my betting in shops. It is the best way to keep myself disciplined. I work close to a Lads, Powers, Boyles and Hills. I live close to Hills, Boyles and Lads.

I have just a couple of internet accounts to pick up Corals and VC prices. I try not to use them.

Most of my bigger bets are in bigger races anyway; I can count on one hand the number of times I have been refused a bet in person (15 years' punting).

I agree dirty great wedges of wonga is by far the best way to conduct business. Stuff all of this matching bits and pieces in cyber.

Also very easy to get on in London shops, particularly in the City.

Don't agree to be honest, the referral limits seem a lot lower in the city. Think this is because a lot of commission agents and syndicates used to bet in the city to move live money and it's scared the firms a bit.

Areas with large cash businesses such as Chinatown, Edgware Road and Tooting tend to let you get on to larger levels than the city.

Indeed, there's only a Ladbrokes and a Coral near my office and they're both over a ten minute walk away (in seperate directions) and when one of us from our office goes in there, they basically sound a claxon!

Irish shops are easy to get on in - British ones less so and Brighton ones impossible.

Online's not too bad - surprised at how long by Bet365 account has lasted despite being a ridiculous amount up whilst my Ladbrokes one is down to zero online and they wouldn't even lay £10 each-way at 16's last time I tried to use it for a horse race (not tipping line, Curley, Byrnes, Martin etc.) whilst my Skybet account is cut to a ridiculous amount as is the Boyles account.

Can't beat betting in cash when it comes to getting weighed in but on the off chance you get it wrong and it cops the idiots safety net is always helpful when betting online (though more and more firms are removing it now) whilst Betfair offer ridiculous win odds when people start pushing them out.

To be fair, if Steve is referring to the Paddy Power right next to me, then I can't see anyone getting refused unless they are in there every single day winning fortunes. Not sure about the other shops but this one does seem a bit different.

City and West End at Ladbrokes etc will take four (and five) figure bets without blinking an eyelid (at least the flagship branches will), perhaps bigger (I've no experience of anything bigger). When I backed Montjeu to win the Irish Derby I averaged about 5/2 after being limited to 11/4 and 5/2 and having to take some 15/8. But that was the biggest cash stake I've put down either on or off course, with the return big enough to pay for Down To The Woods at the sales plus change.

Usually most London branches will give me all I want at an advertised price. However, I don't make a habit of making very big bets every week. I usually tend to build up ante-post positions in the 50s and 100s rather than anything much bigger. like Barry says I can count on the fingers of one hand the times I've been refused and I'm always able to get on somewhere else if need be.
