The 2011 2-y-o thread.

Are you sure he's worth such high Marx?

The horse should go very close in whichever race he contests this week and I sincerely hope Her Majesty is in and around the winners' enclosure afterwards as I'd love to read this report: "The Queen patted, stroked and generally made a fuss of Frederick Engels at Royal Ascot yesterday..."

Two excellent 2-y-o races at Ascot.

I can see about 10 winners of the Coventry and almost as many for the Windsor Castle.

Reckon it should 8/1 the field for the Coventry and 5s in the last.

After Fred's success yesterday SHUMOOS looked nailed on today but not good enough to hold off BEST TERMS with CALEDONIA LADY (100/1) a very close third.

A result that will surely please the bookmakers.

i've not been watching today..but the 2nd race at Ponty shows that MY PROPELLER looks aptly named..won her maiden by 17..yes 17 lengths..is that possible?..1.4 seconds faster than the other division

.............they wouldn't do that would they?.............well not intentionally...........Charlie Mann or Alan Berry? well yes they have been known to send the wrong horse to the races!!

Matthew Tester's (BHA 2-y-o handicapper) thoughts on the 2-y-o scene after Ascot:

FROM SMALL ACORNS...

Matthew Tester on how the two-year-olds shape up

On May 13 a couple of two-year-oldraces got disappointingly small fields, but then again, size isn't everything.

The maiden race at Hamilton that day attracted only four runners and three of those had never run before. The winner, Bapak Chinta, went on to win the Norfolk last week in good style by a length. The second, Frederick Engels, went on to win the Windsor Castle by two and a quarter lengths.

A conditions race for fillies at Newbury only saw three runners. The winner, Best Terms, went on to win the Queen Mary in a thrilling finish and a three-way photo. The second, Dijarvo, won the first Listed race of the season in France.

And you can find top class horses now at every track. The second and third in the Coventry came there from winning Leicester maidens. The first four in the Windsor Castle had each won one race - at Musselburgh, Newcastle, Beverley and Folkestone. The Albany winner was a maiden and the second and third had won their races at Redcar and on the all-weather at Lingfield. It was a fascinating Royal Ascot for the two-year-olds.

All their races came up to the usual standard of recent renewals. There were some hugely promising types but none of them are yet rated head and shoulders above the rest. However one loser caught the eye more than any other. Do have a look at the run of Gatepost in the Coventry Stakes if you get the chance. The horse covered himself in glory to finish so close and he must be considered value for much more than the bare finishing position suggests.

After seeing SHUMOOS win in breathtaking fashion at Haydock I wouldn't have believed that she would be beaten in her next two races.

A narrow defeat by BEST TERMS in the Group 2 Queen Mary at Royal Ascot has been followed up by a third place this afternoon at Newmarket in the Group 2 Cherry Hinton. The race was won by the twice-raced maiden GAMILATI (Al Zarooni) and RUSSELLIANA (Stoutey) winner of her only race at Leicester.

In the July Stakes on Thursday FREDERICK ENGELS confirmed that he was a very decent sort with a smooth victory over the more-fancied ROMAN SOLDIER.

Given that she's 5/1 fav in some books and no longer than 7/1 anywhere for next year's One Thousand, it's worth noting that the form of Maybe's Chesham win is looking worse by the day.

Good performance by ROUGEMONT (only just seen it). Interesting to see how he gets on in better company - Gimcrack on the agenda I believe.

Same ownership as Strong Suit

From the Racing Post site:

RICHARD HANNON is considering some lofty juvenile targets for July festival winner Rougemont, who was introduced into the Classic markets following his victory last Friday.

The trainer, renowned for his expert handling of two-year-olds, appears to have unearthed another exciting prospect judging by the manner of the Montjeu colt's 25-1 success in the 7f maiden.
With previous winners of that contest including Alhaarth, Dubai Destination, Rio De La Plata, Elusive Pimpernel and Native Khan, Hannon admits the Julie Wood-owned juvenile "might be a bit special".

On his website, he added: "Though he had worked well, we did not expect him to win so well as he did first time out at Newmarket.

"Obviously, we will now be thumbing through the Pattern race book, and, while the Dewhurst and Racing Post Trophy could be on the agenda later on, we will take it one step at a time, and races like the Vintage at Goodwood, Solario at Sandown and Acomb at York could all come into the equation."

Rougemont is a 33-1 shot with William Hill for the Qipco 2,000Guineas and 25-1 for the Investec Derby.
