The 2016 Betfair Hurdle Newbury Sat Feb 13

That's me 3 pts down already on the race with 2 days to go!

I really thought they'd wait until the morning to take out JC as it seems to have been dry for a few days but I only just got home within the last few minutes to an email from bigeeps informing me of the withdrawal just as I was trying to get online to lay off the bet.

I might leave the race completely alone now. I'm well and truly pished off after all that work.

If it's heavy everywhere I might just leave the entire weekend alone.

The fact that Barry is prepared to get down to 10-4 again (did it for the win on Cup Final last w/e), which is his lowest weight in the past 12 months is surely indicative. It's not like his other main choice was a 33/1 no-hoper.

There's no value left but there's a hell of a lot of positives for this horse.

It's hardly a negative for Sternrubin that his trainer has compressed the weights for him, either. :)

I've mentioned this on the history thread.

Anyone mad keen to back Blazer should note that Vicario Di Bray was regarded as much more leniently handicapped when sent off 4/7 fav - yes you're not seeing things - for the race but could only finish second (to Grey Salute).

And I thought I was stealing money backing him at 15/8 :(

Very different DO. I was all over him too but we know translating graded race form to handicaps can be misleading

Bad luck DO - perhaps you will get your money back in the County .

I am not convinced by Blazer - that was a shocking race at Leopardstown . I remain a Sternrubin fan . Why is STD not on Modus ?

Not sure how keen Mullins on on the rest if Ruby us staying at home

If anyone can tell me how to upload a document (Word) I'll post my figures for the race so you can all have a good laugh.

Cleary JP has gone off STD since he fell of his last runner.

Do you know the Irish form or are you allowing Barry Geraghty to lead you up the garden pat because it's in his best interests to do so?

Copy and Paste it in....or you need to link it to a website.

I’ll look again at the race on Friday evening but probably will wait now until Saturday morning before having any more – if any – bets. The plan was to leave the race alone but the table suggests there’s still plenty of value to be had and that those just behind Blazer in the betting might not be much value. Of course, poor value prices don’t mean the horses can’t or won’t win but I’ll be bodyswerving them. I’ll probably concentrate on the market without the favourite but of those in the first half-dozen of the betting I much prefer Sternrubin.

For those of you not used to seeing these figures, I should point out that in my head I add 5lbs to horses rated on their OR in handicaps and the MON column is my own ratings. The figure in brackets is the target rating for an average winner.

Jockey bookings put me off Zarib and Ivan Grozny even though the latter ran a lot better than his final position last time, and to a lesser extent Agrapart.

Kalkir and Buiseness Sivola carried the money in the big Irish race so might carry some sickness insurance here at much bigger odds.

Other runners that hold some appeal at big prices are Chieftain’s Choice and Flying Angel.

Some points to add

jockey bookings always important but in this case some significant ones

Mullins running 4 and the favorite, Ruby not riding and Townnend neither, bad sound a for the other four

war sound without Richard johnson another negative.

Gerathy on the favorite ahead the former favorite and 3 more of his owner.

Zarib, another negative on jockey bookings

hutchinson not riding for king,

I wouldn't read too much into Johnson not being on War Sound. Gethings has ridden him 4/5 times - the only person to win on him - and takes off a valuable 5lb.

Hobbs thinks he's a Champion Hurdle horse so he'd have to go close in this off an adjusted mark of 143 and for me is the biggest danger to the jolly.

I spent a lot of time the other night checking the Mullins jockeys and decided that apart from Blazer, the only likely trier is Buiseness Sivola. Ruby is a fan of STD.

Hutchinson is out injured, is he not?

FWIW, John Constable was joint top on 167+p, which I'd worked out the week the weights came out and as I said elsewhere I reckon he can find 10lbs. That's why I was so keen on him. I'll never get 33/1 for him again in these circumstances. He'll be no more than 16/1 when the betting for the County opens.

Edit: writing the above prompted me to check if there was any betting fo the County. To my surprise there is and JC is 33/1 in places so I've taken that. If I'm going to be dogmatic I might as well be right or wrong in style :D

Not for me
the first 2 chances go to mullins nephews
business , a negative for me even Jacob is not riding

I've mentioned this on the history thread.

Anyone mad keen to back Blazer should note that Vicario Di Bray was regarded as much more leniently handicapped when sent off 4/7 fav - yes you're not seeing things - for the race but could only finish second (to Grey Salute).

And I thought I was stealing money backing him at 15/8 :(

I've just remembered another 'good thing' I backed for this that got beat. I was on Blue Bajan at fancy odds the year he was well beaten (tried to come from the back in a moderately run race but the ground might have been a bit soft for him anyway) only for him to come out and win the Swinton a few runs later by 8 lengths off 6lbs higher :(

From my archive:

I reckon Blue Bajan is a bit of a good thing here. I got on at various prices from 36 up to 50 a couple of weeks ago and laid it all off at 8.2. The horse holds entries in the Supreme Novices, for which he’s been backed this week, and Champion Hurdle, which is probably a tad ambitious for the time being. However he was a 111 horse on the Flat and coped well with the hustle and bustle of a 33-runner Cambridgeshire when second to Formal Decree. Richard Hughes revealed on TV this morning that he was asked at Christmas to ride him in this race so this isn’t an afterthought. Trainer Andy Turnell is also on record as saying this horse is better than his Squire Silk, who won it off 145 in 1996. Blue Bajan runs off 128 today. Commentators have mentioned he needs to improve his jumping but he’s already [top] rated on what he’s done and any improvement in his jumping will simply enhance his chances.

He went off at 5/1 that day and his career OR peaked at 160!

Having my first decent bet of the year on Affaire D'honneur in the Schweppes at 11/1- ran an eyecatching race at Kempton looking like going left handed would suit him better and on breeding he should handle the ground. The stable has won with its last two winners and Gavin Sheehan was the king of Newbury at the Hennessy meeting.
I also note that the stable have Nico de Boinville leaving Newbury early to ride Fatcatinthehat in the last at Warwick-currently 4/1.At best odds the double is 59/1-I am going to have a stab at that to pay for the summer holidays.
