The 2022 Derby Thread

I was told years ago that the bend was very like Tattenham corner. But I suppose a lot of tracks have similar bends. I haven’t been to many flat racing tracks.

It’s always worth taking note of horses that Michael Stout starts off at Nottingham, especially as it has a Tottenham Corner type bend. Says I who never thought of backing him. Hindsight and all that.

I understand your confusion...old age doesn't come itself

Very easy to confuse Lingfield and Nottingham as they both have ING in their names:lol:

Don't see any sense in trying to rate Desert Crown. On paper he beat dross but did it in the style of a very good horse.

But if one insists on a rating give him the same as Baaeed 125

Aren't your eyes good enough? it will take a very good horse to beat him, whatever they are rated by someone else.

In that case why try to give any horse a rating?

The whole point of ratings is to try and give measurable or quantifiable evaluations of the ability of horses.

Agree completely, after RK took a pull 3 down, the rest weren't in the same race, and any rating would be pure guesswork.

I look forward to working out ratings for the race.

Runner-up rated 105.
Third rated 109.

Hmmmmm....

Just a thought... is it possible that the fireworks affected a lot of the runners and caused them not to run their race?

(I was angry at the time. All I could think of was my gallus wee Heinz who turned into a quivering wreck any time he heard fireworks and took ages to get over it.)

Yes it easily could have. There were several who looked stressed for a time. The most idiotic idea regardless of whether or not it was on a timer that was supposed to happen after the race which was late off causing them to go off race. Either way, there are still horses present. I feel the need for a very strong email to Epsom!

Same here. Thankfully my current dog doesn’t seem to be afraid of fireworks (yet) but my last dog was a quivering wreck when she heard them. And this was a result of being in the garden one night when someone let a firework off. I was worried about people letting off jubilee fireworks but couldn’t believe it when they did so at Epsom.

Stone Age for one appeared to get quite agitated at the start.

Absolutely appalling from racecourse management

I’m sorry. I don’t understand the point you’re making. Desert Crown started his racing career at Nottingham. When we used to go there we would make a note of 2 year olds that top trainers took there.

Don't let him wind you up, Moe. :)

I think Tanlic must have just about got over arguing with Grasshopper about verbal abuse directed towards female jockeys throughout the winter.

Looks like its onwards and upwards now eh. :)

... and yesterday, with a view to trying to sneak some value, I took El Bodegon (66/1) and Magisterial (100/1) in the belief that if they get there they won't be those prices.

I think those latter prices are gross ever-reactions to performances behind Desert Crown and for which connections were quick to make official excuses. Let's not forget that Workforce was beaten in the Dante before storming home in his Derby.

El Bodegon was second in the French Derby today. El Bastardon.

I wasn't winding him up it was a joke which probabkly went straight over the top of your head

I've been to Nottigham once, the day Gay Brief had his warm up for the Champion Hurdle. We were there to back a horse of Mick Lamberts called Tepylon who beat Nicky Henderson's Destiny Bay in a Haig Whiskey Qualifier so I know the course.
It is as flat as a pancake with normal turns and it does not have a corner that remotely resembles Tattenham Corner..

Now he says he used to go there to note how 2 year olds ran which dumfounds me..I can only assume he's never been to Epsom,

In case you don't know one course that does resemble Epsom is Lingfield and many trainer will take horses they expect to run at Epsom to Lingfield to help educate them.

If you are going to make outlandish statements that are totally off the wall like Nottingham has a bedn like Tattenham corner then someone is going to think you are a ..you tell me

I do agree re the track at Nottingham. Ran several horses there. I guess you could say that Brighton has similarities too in its undulations but can’t see many risking a good horse there!

I have emailed Epsom about the fireworks and as promised the wording was strong....polite but strong!

I was in the Grandstand on the top step when the fireworks went off so was right over our heads

Could barely see the winning post for about a minute but there was a strong wing and cleared pretty quickly, the fireworks stunk as well

Obviously they won't do it again:D

The "Jolly Good Show Old Chap" must have put their heads together to think that crazy one up.

To be fair it took only 5 seconds and the horses were well away and none of them seemed to even notice.

I doubt if the Queen being a horse lover thought much of it
