The 2025 Grand National

Didn't back the winner - he was on my "long" short list but knocked him out when I saw him on the Opening Show this morning as I didn't think he looked great and you can't back them all! I was on the second so cursing and kicking the imaginary cat - had one of those days!

Ah well - you can't win 'em all....well unless you are Willie Mullins...

had 2 darts and both placed (Iroko & Meetingofthewaters) so happy enough, both did well to place really as Iroko didn't jump & travel all that well and Meetingofthewaters made a bad error 2nd time round at Bechers and still came there with a chance coming to the last

Feel a bit gutted.
On the last three Saturdays I have backed:
Leloopa took 33/1 won @ 22/1
Oliver Show took 33/1 unlucky 2nd @ 25/1
now Grangeclare West unlucky 3rd @ 33/1
Will definitely be sticking to outsiders though!!!
To make matters worse I drew the winner in the ITV7 draw and did not back it!!!

I fear for Broadway Boy . In Ruby’s fence by fence analysis Broadway Boy’s fall was not shown nor commented on. When much was being made of the facilities for post race care, electric fans, water etc I suspected that there had been a loss somewhere and they were making an anticipatory defence of the incident.

Both horses are back at the stables apparently - not sure how accurate this is? Anyone heard any more. I caught the bit about C d'A and he was back at the stables having got into the horse ambulance (Stewards enquiry as to why he wasn't pulled up earlier when out of contention - suspect Micheal Nolan will get a fine) but missed the bit about Broadway Boy.

According to the Racing Post Broadway Boy walked on to the horse ambulance and will return to the stables for further assessment.

Personally, given the nature of the modern National, I would like to see a change to conditions of race to exclude horses over 12 running. Roi Mage and Celebre D’Allen would both be ineligible if that were already the case. You could argue that Roi Mage ran perfectly well in it last year, but I think generally horses of that age are always massive outsiders, often depending on old form for their position in the race. The downside of an incident involving either of these 2 during the race would heap further scrutiny on the race (and probably hasten the end of horses older than 12 running anyway).
I hope both horses are OK and it is looking a bit more hopeful. Broadway Boy is the risk we can’t really do much about in advance, but I hope this National is the last with a 13yo in it and the risk to Celebre D’Allen was entirely predictable, especially in today’s conditions.

Micheal Nolan had a shocker there and deserves a bit more than a fine. The horse ran a great race, but once it stopped he should have. It’s a long way home from 2 out and he had no chance of getting there once he stopped.

Thoughts with the horses that got hurt. That aside I think this year has shown a couple of things. You can still get decent ground in a National. Secondly given that 4 of the first 6 had S.p's of 20/1 plus and the winner had done nothing but drift since winning the Bobby jo it goes to prove even with the changes to the race, the fences being made safer it is still is a unique test and a bit of a lottery I personally would've struggled to narrow the field down to 20 possibles and Nick Rockett wasn't amongst them even having won one of the key trials.

Whether the experts like it or not this race can still be a bit of a lottery.

National aside Deep Cave is being called some names in my house tonight. After I'd given that horses numerous chances at big prices I'm just left wondering, How the hell !

16 completed, but, of those that didn't, only three fell, one was brought down and the other unseated.

13 horses pulled up.

The race is still a tough test, but it's the 4m2f run at an end-to-end gallop, not the easier obstacles that have facilitated this, that make it tough for runners nowadays.

I like the modern Grand National.

Possibly unlike some that lament the changes, I don't yearn for the days when half the field departed on the first circuit.

The winner ran off 163, the runner up off 167 and the third off 163.

I've seen lower-rated horses make the frame in Cheltenham Gold Cups.

It's a quality race nowadays.

Roll on the 2026 renewal.

From BHA Stewards reports:

An enquiry was held to consider whether Micheal Nolan, the rider of CELEBRE D’ALLEN (FR), had continued in the race when the horse appeared to have no more to give and was clearly losing ground after the second-last fence. The rider and the Veterinary Officer were interviewed, and recordings of the incident were viewed. The rider was suspended for 10 days.
