The Derby & Irish Derby 2009

Its the owners that have the colours here as well.

Partnership form has to be completed for each horse....the first named partner in the syndicate is the partner who's colours the horse must run under.

The Dark blue/pink sets of colours is fine, Magnier was obviously the first named partner in that syndicate, presumably he had another horse in the race where he was also the first named partner so he must choose which one races in the second set. In that instance Tabor could not use his colours even though he has shares in his horses. It would have to be Magniers first or second colours or a change in cap etc.

I hear what you're saying, but still can't see how that fits with a horse running in alternative colours to those appearing on the racecard - i.e. Tabor's first colours, when on the racecard it's Magnier's second colours.

...Im getting a headache now.:( this seems to have hijacked the Derby thread. I'll need to go away and study some examples before having anything more that's sensible to contribute.

The colours talk is boring. Instead, a question. Given the clip they went last week in the Dante, by how many lengths would Fame and Glory have won if he`d run in it?

So I assume that I'm banned from addressing that nice piece of personal abuse SteveM has slung at me? Fair's fair - if you're editing/deleting posts, be even handed about it.

Several times you have rubbished my opinions on equine matters in recent months, Steve, which is why I responded thus.

Remaining horses left in the race after todays stage:

Age of Aquarius
Black Bear Island
Crowded House
Debussy
Fame And Glory
Father Time
Fergus McIver
Freemantle
Gan Amhras
Golden Sword
Johann Zoffany
Kite Wood
Loch Long
Malibu Bay
Masterofthehorse
Montaff
Rip Van Winkle
Sea The Stars
South Easter
Toraidhe

Without putting the mockers on any of the fine beasts, I got 7s the other week on F&G and 16s on AofA so prob best to look elsewhere for the winner!

I think the lightly raced Montaff should still be in the equation, narrowly beaten by Age of Acquarius on only his third start, showing plenty of promise. 100 is worth a little investment.

Interesting to note F&G is pushed out (a little) in the market with Rip Van Winkle cut into 7/1 in places.

They seem really keen to run Rip. While I don't expect Murtagh to ride anything other than Fame And Glory I think Rip is going to run much better than many appear to think. Rip and Fame are the two most certain to take part in my book.

Montaff's 9/2 fourth favourite to win of the six 'British-trained'.

I'd say Montaff was flattered by his proximity to Age Of Aquarius though.

How certain are you RIP will get the trip Steve? That is my worry.

I’m not certain he’ll stay, whereas I am certain that the likes of Fame And Glory, and others, will. I am quite confident that he’ll run in preference to all but Fame and is fancied at Ballydoyle. He has a pretty good chance of staying, much better than the general consensus seem to imagine. Plus he’s relaxed and balance and doing his best work at the end of his races. There may well be others with more stamina here, but few with more class. He’d get 10 furlongs fine, the extra maybe. Overall I can see him being in the shake up behind the winner.

Sky Bet report more significant support for Rip Van Winkle in their 'What will Johnny Murtagh ride' at Epsom market with the Ballydoyle stable jockey cut for a second time on Friday.
He was initially shortened to 9/4 from 5/1 to partner the 2000 Guineas fourth at Epsom and is now 7/4 to do so.
As a result the current Derby favourite Fame And Glory is now 2/5 from 1/4 to be partnered by Murtagh.
Matt Doyle of Sky Bet said: "If Euros talk then Johnny will be staying loyal to his Guineas partner and turning down the ride on the current favourite."
Rip Van Winkle has also been very well backed in the outright Derby betting with the same firm and is 7/1 from 9/1. In contrast Fame And Glory is out to 11/4 (from 5/2).

Wow. This could mean a very tasty High Chaparral like 7/2 might be available on the day about the Ballydoyle "second string"

yum yum

Interesting... I know that rate Rip's chances highly. I'm a Fame And Glory man though and for my part I wouldn't mind one little bit if Murtagh chose Rip instead.

"Blue Square have halved him in price to 5/1, William Hill are 7s from 10s while Coral go 11/2 from 11/1.
Their spokesman Simon Clare said: "This is the most significant gamble on the Derby since we started betting 12 months ago, and it all points to Rip Van Winkle potentially being the Ballydoyle number one Derby contender.
"At the very least it suggests that Rip Van Winkle is in good shape and expected to run well, and as a result we have eased Sea The Stars and Fame And Glory to get more of them in the book".

In the Irish Times article in April, Aiden O'Brien said that Age of Aquarius had been injured.

An even greater than normal improvement might therefore be expected from his first race of the season.

Thus I can't see Montaff reversing the Lingfield placings
