Arabian Poet 7/2

I'm stretching the title of the thread here for this bet, but it's got a lot of merit.

Arabian Poet ran a very nice race at Doncaster. He travelled like the best horse in the race for most of the way. It was a nice, straightforward comeback run and there was no real panic if it didn’t happen on the day. He'd been gelded while being off for 9 months.

That they haven’t decided to take on older horses is interesting. This horse will surely end up at the horses-in-training sale, so the higher the mark, the better.

Princess Rascal looks a very flaky favourite. The whole price is based on a Windsor race on soft ground where she finished second, pulling 12l clear of the third. Now, the winner and the third from that handicap are entered in a Listed race on Thursday at Salisbury. You could look at that two ways — I’m sceptical it’s a positive. I doubt the form of that race is up to much and certainly not as good as what Arabian Poet did visually at Doncaster.

Hugh Taylor has made the case for Ivatt in his column today, which has pushed Arabian Poet out from an opening price of 5/2 to 11/4. I’d have been happy to take any of those prices when I looked at the market last night.

You can read Hugh Taylor’s opinion below, but I’d argue that Arabian Poet is the best-handicapped horse in the race. Hugh Taylor is giving us a discount on a horse that just might try to make all the running.

I’d just add that Ivatt looks a real boat — one that wants further and probably soft ground on turf. I wouldn’t argue that he’s well handicapped.

Ivatt 5/2 (bet365)
"Ivatt is a lovely big horse for whom we had very high hopes at the start of the year. Nothing has gone to plan however but I feel we are firmly back on track now and he looks in great order. Kempton suits him and he should have come on plenty for his race there the other day. He should go close."

Just thought the rationale was worth repeating.
Thanks,Slim.

There was a lot going on in that race. Most importantly going forward, no one can tell me that the Windsor race Princess Rascal was second in is good form, stopwatch be damned. It’s a perfect example of lazy clock devotees simply getting a horse wrong.

The first and third from that Windsor race are entered on Wednesday in a fillies’ Listed race. I already have a line through both runners.
