TV coverage

Hats off to ITV for using Francesca in the only possible way she could add anything to the programme. McCoy addressing her and educating her in the very basics of the sport. Less annoying than last year.

Chapman and Gleeson are awkward viewing

Chapman is bad enough but Gleeson, as I recall, was much more calm and measured when he did the occasional BBC slot. Somebody has told him we 'need' another Big-Mac type.

Which is actually the last thing we need with Chapman on the scene.

Ah well, hopefully Charlotte will put in an appearance at some point...

Brough Scott said last years Gold Cup was the best Gold Cup he'd ever seen, now he says yesterday's Ryanair is the best race he's ever seen.

A poor attempt at justifying his position and his hefty salary.

A good presenter in his day but brings very little to the table these days and should be put out to grass but then again so should a few of the other younger ones.

Fair play to ITV yesterday. They played their part in making a wonderful day's racing wonderful.

Mrs O mentioned as she distracted me from the form for a moment around lunchtime that she'd seen on the News that a blind man had a horse in a big race. I explained that the horse was favourite, was a certainty and that it would make a brilliant news story. When I told her it had won she rushed to watch the aftermath of the race on TV. In nearly 40 years of wedded bliss (for every man in the world bar me) that's a first.

It was that kind of day.

What were people's views on that Chris Hughes yesterday?

Not keen on reality stars as such, but he had his own views, tried justifying them, and actually tried rather than stand and pose. Seems passionate enough about racing as well, surprised me.

They don't show the horses, and when they do it's with inane comments such as 'the browband is the colour of the netball team they play for" Really? That's the best you can come up with? As for Ollie.......three rimes he asked Bryony Frist the same question in the space of 90 seconds and then, when telling Hadden to go and have his picture taken, pushes in the way to ask Bryony the same question again! No excuse when the only meeting of the day they are covering not to show and say something meaningful about each horse.

That's the norm and we're in danger of becoming inured to it but these moments of buffoonery were completely overwhelmed by the overall coverage.

I could write a long list of things they don't do well and things they don't do at all but yesterday was riveting viewing thanks to the racing itself. I'm happy to let the bad bits slip off the desk for now.

They really give the handicaps no time at all, particularly if directly before or after a feature race.

A show of betting and seeing the mill around the start is all you get. First year I haven't gone to Cheltenham in ages and have been dissapointed with ITV coverage. Then again they are apparently doing well ratings wise so someone must like it!!

Some halfwit has decided it's a good idea to play loud muzak while the Chapman is going through the betting.

I was struggling to make out what Chapman was saying.

But maybe I'm just in a mood because that t1t Persad is heavily involved today.

Ed Chamberlain just said “Good afternoon and congratulations, Your Majesty” after Forth Bridge went in.

What a fu*cking co*ck.

Brough was superb back in the day but in my opinion he comes across as pompous these days.

I had this typed out twice already and chose better of it, cos of its minor nature. However, its all I can hear.

Kate Harrington's most annoying tic. Co-presenting with Kevin O'Ryan again today. Everytime he hands over to her, she begins with 'it certainly has' 'it certainly did' 'he certainly cant' before effectively repeating the point that was made. She certainly is nervous and she certainly will improve but she certainty sounds like the weak link in RTVs roster. Noticed it first last time i had the displeasure of watching RTV with the pair and just cant ignore it today.

Anyway, best of luck to Kate.
