Thyestes Chase at Gowran Park today.

The last time I had the winner was Champagne West I believe.

Dunvegan for me today.

Fakenham, 4.05. Jones Well, dangerously well handicapped for shrewd handler Olly Murphy after some wind surgery.

The Thyestes is one of those great Irish handicap chases that I love, but have an incredibly patchy record in.

I backed Brahma Bull earlier in the week, based on his not being given remotely a hard time against Minella Indo at Naas FTO. Fell on his hoop early last time, so hoping today is the day.

I did my figures for it the other day just in case there was another 'The Jam Man' (a certainty I missed out on earlier in the season) in it. There isn't. However, I did get a wee bit keen on a couple that I expected to be putting on the longshot thread but when I checked the betting I was gobsmacked to see both at single figure odds and no fewer than 16 horses priced at 16/1 or shorter so I decided to hold off for extra places and BOGs.

It's a big race therefore targeted by several for long enough so outlay is conservative.

The three I fancy most are Coko Beach (10/1 in a place the other day, now 15/2 tops), Run Wild Fred (14/1 the other day, now 8/1 tops) and Speak Easy (16/1, now 28s in a place). The first two dutch at about 100/30 so I can let them go as I can't split them.

That just leaves Speak Easy, which I've now backed at 25/1 to six places. Just fun money, mind.

Anything running off 141 or more, ie down as far as Roaring Bull, will risk ruining any hopes for the Grand National as they're likely to be 4-6lbs higher on UK ratings before any hike for winning this or even finishing close. Some of them will be running just to make sure they fulfil the qualifying condition of running in a 3m+ chase this season.

Fvck it.

At least my figures were good

I’m sweet on Ben Case’s Fern Hill in the River Don today (12/1 B365).

He started his hurdling career with a perfectly respectable run behind the now 144-rated Third Time Lucki, over what looks very-much like an inadequate 2-miles, and he has shaped like stayer in both his subsequent winning outings.

Granted, he still needs to prove he stays 3m, but he has been going away at the end of those wins over 2m3f and 2m5f, and there are some much shorter in the betting with the same question to answer.

If he was trained by someone sexier, he’d be half the price, and he looks the value in a race which appears unlikely to contain any superstars.

I'm with you on that one. Looks all stamina.

I have backed Portstorm at 40s last night as one who might pass enough in the last half mile to nab a place.

Why would that be any more or less likely than any other horse Trefflich? I'm not sure what the point is you're making?

Sorry. I thought you were making a point that I'd missed, rather than talking about a jockey putting a horse on the deck for the sake of it.

An ew 'break the boredom' trixie today- between golf in Dubai (backed Lowry) and Golf in California (backed Homa.)

Fern Hill, (trained by the very sexy Ben Case.)
Rockys Treasure
Mercian Night

Also just had a single on Miranda, Skybet. cash back if 2nd.

I think Eye Van (Naas 1.45) should be shorter than 10/1. Ran into the 2021 Martin Pipe winner at Limerick when miles clear of everything else. Likes the ground, thorough stayer, and surprised if he isn't in the first three today. Looking at the w/o markets to see if there is any better way to play it.

Price gone. 5/1 in a place now. Don't think it's a lot of money for him more a price correction across the board.

I've backed Forza Milan in 3.15, think its a bit under the radar.

My top tracker Notice To Close I hope wins the 3.45 to put himself in with a shout of getting a Cheltenham Festival handicap chase entry.

Ilikedwayurthinking was awful in his first three starts in novice chases, but his mark won't get him in anything in March so presumably today is the day they'll want to win given there's been plenty of money for him 10/1 on opening and now as short as 9/2.

Gavin Cromwell's form is a bit of a worry, but I'm happy to risk him at 6/1 with 365.

Siglo Six 1.40W was unlucky on his last run for Hugo Palmer: hampered and behind from the start, he ran an eyecatching race to be beaten just over 2l in a better race than this. Appears to be running into form for new trainer, and just qualifies for this drop in class.
14/1 B365
