I have just discovered why I have never found any buried treasure. I’ve always thought that a pace was a step. A step is the distance between your right foot touching the ground and your left foot doing so. A pace is the distance between your right foot touching the ground and then touching it again.
So a pace is two steps, I’m off to find X marks the spot.
