The big amateur rider handicap at Galway this evening is often targeted by trainers from a long way off and is always an interesting betting race.

The horses are handicapped based on their flat form but for many of them their flat form to date is not very irrelevant. The race often goes to a horse that has shown enough form over jumps to indicate their flat handicap mark is on the low side. A common reason for the low flat mark is that they have been running over shorter trips than tonight's 2m and the handicapper has not had a chance to get stuck into them properly, even though they may have shown over jumps that they have plenty of class.

The horse coming closest to this profile in this year's race is Oilily, who did us a favour at Leopardstown a few weeks ago over 14f when she just held on. The slightly better ground and extra distance tonight should keep her ahead of the handicapper and I suspect the hill will also help her.

It is absolutely ludicrous how Weld manages to farm that 2yo maiden. And he won the opener for good measure, too.

I fancied Oilily and Citizenship when I looked at the amateur race this morning, so I read your post and decided to go all in on the former.

You need to leave your wife Bar....

Weld wins the big one as well....His best chance of a winner is in the last according to himself.

Fascinating 2-y-o maiden fillies event at 6.10.

Forecast favourite is Big Break a full sister to Famous Name but there are other strong candidates; Magical Dream by Galileo out of Red Evie a Lockinge winner, Diamond Sky by Montjeu out of a mare that was placed in the Lowther and Cheveley Park, Fire and Flame by Henrythenavigator out of a very good American mare and her stable companion Dusty In Memphis from a very good American family.

Love the 28Carat filly - ran green last time out.

Bit of trivia-which horse trained in Ireland has been beaten at 1.01,1.03,1.05 and 1.18 in it's last 4 races.

Incorrect and incorrect. Leitir Mor has been good to me.

I was only messing, Luke.

Plate and Hurdle my first two racing bets since Aintree Hurdle......and I haven't exactly poured hours into studying either race. Still ain't got my mojo back and don't have that sense of anticipation about Chasers & Hurdlers arriving in early October.....which is seriously worrying.

You'll soon get it back when it arrives Grassy. Next season promises to be an absolute classic.

I'm looking forward to it and work and 24 hour flights won't get in the way of the Festival this season. So I'll be seeing you in the Plough for the first time in three years, assuming you finally know your way there after my wonderful directions four years ago!:D

Unsure on Luke's but I know that Blackstairmountain was a regular in the 1.01 gubbings stakes a couple of seasons back whilst this years Plate winner has been beaten at 1.02, 1.41 and 1.14 in his three most recent first (1.14 being the most recent).

Catfromtherock who touched 1.18 in the 710 last night is the horse I refer to.Only for him and Noble Mission I would be out of the game this week.

No idea why he wouldn't be qualified CL :(

16:10 Captain Luke - This horse is no 33/1 shot which is what SJ have him in at, makes his handicap debut here after some eyecatching runs over this trip (two starts back) and LTO over shorter, he's a local runner with a young conditional (who usually rides him) on board, acts well on soft ground and should go well at a huge price IMO.

I read yesterday that Torphichen was a non runner in the Plate as he wasn't qualified. Does anyone know why?

"a failure to supply Horse Racing Ireland with the correct paperwork on its return means that it will not be allowed to line out today" from todays Irish Independent
