The big amateur rider handicap at Galway this evening is often targeted by trainers from a long way off and is always an interesting betting race.
The horses are handicapped based on their flat form but for many of them their flat form to date is not very irrelevant. The race often goes to a horse that has shown enough form over jumps to indicate their flat handicap mark is on the low side. A common reason for the low flat mark is that they have been running over shorter trips than tonight's 2m and the handicapper has not had a chance to get stuck into them properly, even though they may have shown over jumps that they have plenty of class.
The horse coming closest to this profile in this year's race is Oilily, who did us a favour at Leopardstown a few weeks ago over 14f when she just held on. The slightly better ground and extra distance tonight should keep her ahead of the handicapper and I suspect the hill will also help her.
