The Road to the Queen Mother

I'm going for Tataniano. He jumps well and he's fit and in good heart. I am guilty of going for this horse again and again though. Sizing Europe has an obvious chance if all is well but I don't know what it is about this horse. I can't take to him. Finian's Rainbow needs to leave his novice...

    The King George

I think Kauto looked to have more zip on Saturday than he did this time last year. It was much more impressive than his Down Royal win. I take on board that he was more forward for this race, but I still think he can put it up to Long Run again at Kempton.

    What are you backing Today?

Haven't had a bet today but I see Henderson has already had seven winners today.

    Hennessy field.

Some nice horses in the field but it just leaves me thinking how lucky we've been to have had Denman lining up in this race in the last few years.

    Betfair Chase

To think, Long Run wasn't born when Kauto burst on to the UK scene at Newbury in December 2004.

    Betfair Chase

Never been so over the moon to be wrong. What a magnificent horse. Grade 1 wins in every year from 2005. Fabulous record.

    Betfair Chase

I'd be surprised if Long Run doesn't win tomorrow. I'm not really concerned about his fitness. This is a Grade 1.

    Cheltenham Friday

And in fairness too, Steps To Freedom has been on the go since April. Loved Grands Crus there.

Road to the Gold Cup 2012

What's Long Run likely to run in this season? The Betfair Chase, King George and Gold Cup? I think he'll win the first two but I'm a bit leery of the Gold Cup. He won comfortably last year but as admirably as Denman and Kauto ran, they weren't the horses they used to be. Edit: There's talk of...

Road to the Gold Cup 2012

Technically that's true, but Long Run would have been a 5yo winner of the King George last season if it hadn't been postponed a couple of weeks. That said, he was more experienced for his age. I think Mon Parrain's a better jumper than Long Run but LR has some engine.

    Punchestown Day 3

What will they do with Mikael D'Haguenet now?

    Kauto Star

Kauto will do for me as the best chaser of my lifetime. His consistency has been remarkable, and his versatility made him my favourite. Graded chase wins at Aintree, Cheltenham, Newbury, Haydock, Ascot, Sandown, Kempton and Down Royal, over distances from 2m to 3m2f. Great that he's stayed...

The Road to The Man who would be King

Missed most of it but I wish the happy couple all the best. I like that it's brought so many together and the flags are flying. There is so little of that in this country now, which I find sad. Sometimes I feel like we're often discouraged from celebrating our nationality for fear of offending...

    Horses We Like

Cool Roxy. He was fun to watch around Fakenham. Probably at the top of my list just now is Carole's Legacy. I love her to bits.

    Big Buck's- Staying Hurdling Arkle

I'd put Big Buck's down as the best staying hurdler I've seen. I was one who was disappointed that he didn't get another chance over fences after the Hennessy. He was only five and still ran a bloody good race first time up that season, I thought. He also had Albertas Run behind him in the...

    Aintree Hurdle

Big Buck's should have gone for this. In fact, he probably could have run in this as well as on Thursday.

The Road to the Grand National 2011

Lost confidence in all three of my antepost bets for this. Backstage now added to my selections.

    Aintree Day 1

This meeting is always one of my favourites. Big Buck's was a pleasure to watch today. Interesting to hear that both Nicholls and Dan Skelton think he's the best horse they've ever had at Ditcheat. I don't agree with them, but still. Shame about Denman. I was hoping that if they ran him again...

Not sure about Planet of Sound. Imperial Commander is a possible for Punchestown.

    Retirements & Departures 2011

The RP reports that the wonderful little Docklands Express has died, age 29. What a smashing racehorse he was. A thoroughly genuine sort.
