2022 Grand National

Eclair Surf is a laughable price. There is a big difference between an Eider and taking on proper graded horses around Aintree.

I agree. The Eider is good form in the normal scheme of things but the National is another beast altogether.

As I said earlier, I'm looking for something with 160 [on my ratings / 155+ on RPRs] either on the board or in the locker.

And the further down the handicap they are the better, natch.

Hands up, I haven't put a figure next to Eclair Surf because I don't fancy it to make the cut so will only check it if it looks like doing so.

But stablemate De Rasher Counter won a Hennessy off 149 (161 on RPRs for it), gets in here off that mark and kept tabs on G1 horses at Newbury in the Denman until fitness became an issue.

A proper longshot with a serious shout.

I'll say it again, though: if Chatham Street Lad gets round and stays he will be very difficult to beat.

Ah yes Chatham Street Lad. A horse I backed that day he hacked up at Cheltenham, think it was the Caspian Cavier something or other.

I might have to have a saver on him then, even though he puts in the odd bad jump.

I'm pretty certain Chatham Street Lad won't be declared at the 5 day stage.

I'm pretty sure the quote I read not long ago was that the horse was bang on target for the race (or words to that effect).

I might have to start looking at cashing out if the plan is to skip the race.

I agree 14's is a laughable price right now, but you can't ignore the Eider form with Win My wings if he makes the cut. Because of the weights already being framed he'll get to run off 143, so he's officially 4lbs well in. And that's before you take into account potentially just how well handicapped he is if you take the Win My Wings form on Saturday at face value. His earlier form with Corach Rambler and Gericault Roque, when he routed them in the Classic Chase at Warwick was franked at the Festival too.

If he gets a run, that form, along with the evidence he'll stay the National trip, will probably have him vying for favouritism on the day with Delta Work and Any Second Now.

The Eider is not his only piece of good form, his win at Warwick was advertised nicely in the Ultima. Delta Work is the one towards the head of the market I cannot have. 160 rated chaser on the decline? No thanks.

I wouldn’t normally consider trainer form in the National but when a yard such as Elliott’s has 1 winner from his last 72 runners you start to wonder if something is up.

Admittedly he wouldn’t be targeting much between Cheltenham and Aintree but even so.

His form is pretty solid IMO, his stamina all but assured and his prominent run style will be a positive but it’s his jumping that worries me.

He wasn’t getting very high at Bangor earlier in the season and was skewing during the air prior to falling and the same was true at Chepstow before he clouted the 5th last, which put him out of contention.

He’s looked more assured on his next two outings but at the price he currently is it’s still a risk as for all that the fences have been made easier in recent years, they still take some jumping.

Eclair Surf still needs four to come out by Thursday to make the cut after today's decs.

Jesus but Elliott alone has some still in who have no business running in a National - Mount Ida, Battleoverdoyen, Samcro ffs. Come on.

Easysland? That's an accident waiting to happen
