Bloodstock News

Any pics about of Black Sam since he has been in stud?

pm me, Gal, I can send you loads from his time over here in germany, though have to admit no "proper" conformation shot. he never posed for us, we just visted him a lot last year.

our mare has a lovely BSB colt in switzerland, who won a 60,000€ race in Deauville on boxing day and was 2nd in swiss derby. my partner is keen to send her again next year (assuming he does come back to germany, something the stud over here is very keen on) - they are convinced too that the best is yet to come in germany this season, with last years german st leger winner valdino sure to go on to better things (after all, not that much competition left over here) , his older filly goathemala sure to score at group level and her younger sister a strong fancy for this years german oaks.

BSB is a lovely strong good sort, clearly more NH stallion than a flat sire, and while buketts son is a bright chestnut he normally stamps his stock well and gives a lot of scope, and colour. he too has a really amazing temperament, very professional breeder too

Great news, crazyhorse. I can understand why you would be keen to send her again to BSB. Best of luck with your colt this year!

Thanks Kathy - but did not mean it that way (Bukett wasnt ours when covered by BSB anyway, but naturally I am very pleased for her) - just wanted to point out that Black Sam can get decent winners on the Flat as well, and I might add that while they clearly want a trip, the above mentioned (called Bellamy Prince) needs a trip just short of 10f to be at his best. Black Sams offspring are galoppers all, with no flashy acceleration, but a very willling attidute. Black Jacari is another example in britian, although we all would have loved to see him win at least one by now. he can gallop, but not quicken.

I love Black Sam, is a real stunner and so well bred (obviously) would certainly use him for a NH mare. With a pedigree like his you may well find that he gets decent flat performers too, if the mare was quick. Like Bellamy Prince.

Sorry Shadow Leader, had I read your post correctly (doh! :o ) I'd know it was Lucarno being naughty and not Sam! I think Lucarno was a bit of a character while racing too - but a really nice looking one.

Have only seen photos of I've Been Framed but really like the idea of getting something different. You might get a horse like Pancake with unusual markings.

Shadz, did I WAS FRAMED's blurb say whether or not he was heterozygous for the coloured gene (ie all his stock will be coloured - and didn't put that to be patronising but his stud card may have used that particular term) ?

Ahhhh... thanks for the confirmation, Crazyhorse. I get quite confused nowadays - especially remembering which foal is out of which mare/stallion combination. I don't know if you write it all down or just have a good memory. :)

I Was Framed's 'stud card' didn't really deserve that title! It was a double sided piece of cardboard with mainly pictures of his offspring on it and no mention of whether or not he was heterozygous for the coloured gene or not. However I know that he's not since I did speak to the woman with him who said that the best results they've had in terms of coloured foals were from chestnut and black mares, apparently solid bay doesn't guarantee coloured offspring. She also said that greys should not be put to overos since if they both carry the same 'white' gene (her words not mine!!) it can lead to abortion of the foetus.

On reading the blurb, they say they offer concessions for winning mares and non-TBs but the official terms are £1500 NFFR.

Oh, and yes, he is officially overo - his 2yo colt that went through the ring at Donny yesterday enjoyed the status of being the first overo registered with Weatherby's.

and for anyone who wants to know what the heck an Overo is....

"categorized by their individual coat pattern, which can be tobiano, overo or tovero. The tobiano pattern is distinguished by oval or round spots that extend down the neck and chest. White will often cross the horse’s back between its withers and tail. The tobiano’s head markings may be completely solid, or have a blaze, strip, star or snip. Generally, their legs are white, at least below the knees and hocks, and their tail is often two colours.
The overo pattern may be predominantly dark or white. Typically, the white will not cross the back of the horse between its withers and tail. Overos often have bold white head markings, such as a bald face. Generally, an overo’s body markings will be irregular and scattered, and one or all four legs will be dark. Their tail is usually one colour.
Because not all coat patterns fit neatly into these two categories, the American Paint Horse Association expanded its classifications to include the tovero pattern to describe horses that have characteristics of both the tobiano and overo patterns."

I know thats for paints - but its all the same in the coloureds world (from a registration point of view.)

If it weren't for those damn yanks, he'd be classified as skewbald. Which is pretty much what he is!!!

The woman from the stud told me the bit about not mating him with greys (unless they've been blood tested to make sure they don't have the 'white' gene as she called it) as I commented that he'd produce something pretty spectacular put to my iron grey filly. In truth she's more of a black roan (if there were such a thing!!) than a grey anyway and is officially black or grey.

For anyone interested in the horse, here are two pictures of him (one of either side)taken from the Malpas Stud website, where he stands :

Those markings are pretty stunning and even more impressive up close, as the animal himself, he's a real presence and loves to show off as well as having a great temperament. I'm sorely tempted to send one of mine to him, now, just to get a highly saleable stunning baby out of one of them!

See i just cant decide - one minute I like him, the next i look and think "yuck!!"

Ive very muched warmed to him though - and (imo!) hes beautifully put together...

I know what you mean, there is something so classically beautiful about a nice bay TB. But I like variety and like you I warm to this one. I think it helps enormously, as you mentioned too, that he is nicely put together.

Don't know about the 'skewbald' rule from America - what is this Shadz? I am American but escaped form there a good many years ago and do not know much about breeding over there.

Tobiano and overo are the way the different colour arrangements are set out - CHAPS use it over here too, to diferentiate between the two types - just confuses things (imo!) they either look like someone has dropped paint on them or sprayed it up from underneath !!!!

Be lovely to breed one from him - but its SO not the right time to just be doing it for the sake of it.

and - the more I look at him,the more he puts me in mind of Nomadic Way.... lightweight and pretty.... :)

What I meant Crucifix was in the classification of his colouring. Overo/tobiano etc are essentially new terms and were (I believe) only adopted since the US started to classify them as such.

Traditionally, a horse is piebald if it is black and white or skewbald if it is any other colour and white and spotted (or appaloosa but that's a breed in its own right) if it is spotted - the new classifications get too complicated for my liking!
