Grand National protests

Of course the vast majority of racehorses are cared for, far better than any horse left out in a field to face the elements. The issue is more that racehorses are trained to partake in a risky endeavour, to entertain and potentially profit humans. That’s the bit, to my mind, which is unsavoury.

Len, is asking an 8yo steeplechaser to jump a fence, any more risky than asking a 2yo to run on quick ground?

Perhaps it is, but both carry risk to the animal in question. That being the case, I'm not really understanding your rationale to stop betting on Jumps - the inference being that you'll continue to do so on the level.

In my view, we either accept the risks associated with horse-racing generally, or we don't. I don't see there being any middle ground, tbh.

I think it’s about the amount of risk I’m prepared to tolerate, Grass. I’m working through these decisions almost in real time on this forum!

Listened to the Jeremy Vine piece on it - fairly well balanced but I suspect that anyone who has already made their mind up about the subject isn't going to be swayed by the defence of the sport.

To be honest Grass some of the flat leg breaks look way worse than falls over the sticks. But what do we do if we listen to this ban it group? scrap the whole game? It is a game in reality as are most things we take part in hobby wise. We either accept that or get another interest. I think the gains out way the losses and I can't think of it in other way. It is like walking to the shop, one day you may get run over crossing the road. So what do you do? Never go out?

I have no doubt that owners and trainers love their horses very much, they would have to be sociapaths not do so. But all of them are being painted now like they don't care about horses, it is just so unfair isn't it?

All I hear is negative though on these shows Simmo. If I had no interest in horse racing, after listening to all these shows, it would probably sway me towards wanting it banned.

I do actually think this issue over last few days is really going to sway public opinion. I think to ignore the rhetoric these shows are throwing out is a real threat to horse racing. Yes, some will say..oooh it will blow over in a few days..it may well do...but crikey these last few days have been probably the worst I have heard against horse racing.

Unfortunately there isn’t a lot in the way of news at the moment which is why they’re running with it. The amount of misinformation I hear on other forums is astounding.

And yet when they do an hour on such as LBC, virtually every caller is anti. I know they might be skewing that but I am going to be honest, I am disappointed by the fact that people inside the industry just don't put an argument up.

It might seem like its just a radio show, but it has million of listeners. Racing people need to start voicing their opinion on such as LBC Jinny.

If they don't, I am really worried that NH racing will be squashed

Would they be doing an hour if there had been no morons in pink t shirts? If they really wanted to get in there, buy a ticket with normal dress on top. Work way out onto areas of course, jump smaller fences , take off top layer... seriously they can't even protest properly. Makes me absolute fuming. How many of those horses got over hot/revved up by hanging around? How extra tense/nervous were some of the jocks going out to run after all that as well? Absolutely outrageous. They can't even get their facts straight as shown in this thread. I have spent an absolute fortune on my animals. I've not had a holiday for 14 years. I did everything to save Molly and Rowley and the aim was not to bet on them. I failed to save Molls but it was a freak event which caused her issue. She slipped in a greasy paddock. She loved racing/jumping. She had had a great life. Rowley absolutely LOVES running and jumping. LOVES it. If didn't get out onto a racecourse would be hyper. Brodie didn't make it but had operation/MRI/enough x rays to cook steak... now crippling me financially trying to make him a riding horse all the time hoping his knee holds up. These people make me so mad. Someone ask LBC to get Kevin Blake on.

You are just as I imagine every owner to be, you care about your horses. I wish someone from the industry would ring these shows as you say. But they are probably too busy caring for their horses, or such as Kevin Blake, studying tomorrows card. I wish he would take some time out to ring LBC, who seem to be doing at least 1 hour, sometimes two, per day on this.

This is such a tough time for horse racing. I know this stuff comes up from time to time in the media but this particular episode just seems to be very serious for racing.

Some of the stuff that is spouted is so false but does not get challenged because the caller or presenter knows bugger all about horse racing.

Apparently Richard Hoiles (who is one of the best voices in Racing IMO) did go on LBC at some stage.

It isn't starting well, Ian Dale described the National as a massacre of horses ffs. Someone from the industry needs to ring in, this is going out to a lot of people

Never had so much vitriol aimed at racing on another forum I’m on. All signing the petition. It’s horrible.

I'm listening now.

Iain started off stating the amount of deaths at Cheltenham and Aintree over the years, but he doesn't quote the deaths as a percentage of overall runners, or how many horses came back safe and sound.

This is the problem, so much P**s poor analysis with no logic or proper stats. Nick Luck is just a great guy. I bet all he has said just goes over the head of most that will call in.

It is bad what is happening here isn't it? Pro's like Nick Luck need to get stuck in here on these shows or they will trash racing off the scene

We got a right prick on now. He is saying a horse got whipped 69 times..must be a sad f**k spotting that one. I think he is lying.

I think people in the racing industry are underestimating this back lash over the last few days. 30 minutes left now for someone to come on from the industry and start defending racing

Of course he’s lying! There are very strict whip rules! I think you need to turn off the station as it sounds like it is getting you very stressed.
