Jockey News

I'm fairly open-minded about jockeys in general.

Usually if I think I might end up backing a certain horse I'll check how the jockey fares for the trainer and/or at the track. If the stats are good I take it as a positive, if not I might reduce my stake or leave it be.

The only real positive for me these days is Frankie.

A few people were guilty of not reading the original tweet from the Irish PTP Twitter account. It clearly said he was retiring from point to points. He'll still ride as an amateur unfer rules a la Mr P W Mullins

A very good ride by Ben Curtis on A Pint Of Bear in the last race at Catterick.

The horse was wandering but full credit to Ben for keeping at it.

It looked a power packed ride by the business end. In fact Fallon snr would have been proud. :)

Anyone see Richard Kingscote at Salisbury today? A masterclass in an inability to get horses settled and balanced. I've no idea how long Stoute will continue using him but he's simply not good enough.

What's happened to GEORGIA COX.i see she was apprentice at gosden in December. She has no rides booked and no form,does anyone know what's happened to her?
 
Good to see Louis Steward rebuilding his career. What looked a promising future went for a ball of chalk in about 2016/7. Seems to have worked hard on the gallops (initially for Stoute) but now getting regular rides for many trainers, especially Bell and Fellowes. Double for Fellowes yesterday
 
Joe, Joe, Joe . Joe . Joe......desperately sad to just read the ban for Joe Colliver. Not saying it isn't warranted, but really upset to see him go this way. He was doing better. Really hope he can get back on track at least for his health, even if he never rides again. :(
 
Danny Cook has been forced to retire on medical grounds following issues after his eye injury according to the Racing Post (can’t read it because it’s Premium).

I first met Danny when he was a spotty 18yo who arrived at the yard where I was working in Newmarket during his summer break from Jim Olds yard. Straight away you could see he was a talented rider which considering he had only learnt to ride a couple of years before was quite something. I had a 2yo colt at the time I was training on the side and came off him breaking my nose which meant a few weeks off. So I let Danny exercise him for me. And we used to chat a lot about his future. He was determined to be a jockey and I advised him to go amateur first so he could get plenty of experience both on the Flat and Point to Pointing (he was actually champion novice rider Pointing). Anyway he took everything on board and ended up at Pipes which coincided with my return to Somerset so I saw a bit of him. He then rightly decided that he was always going to be second rank behind Timmy Murphy and Tom Scudamore so moved North eventually ending up with Sue and Harvey Smith, who let’s face it were never going to hire a dud!

I am sorry that he has retired prematurely but equally delighted that he got to live his dream even riding a Cheltenham festival winner on Great Endeavour. I wish him all the luck in the future.
 
Wednesday 15th September, 2021 Danny Cook brings curtain down on riding career

Danny Cook has been forced into retirement following the horrible fall he suffered last year that threatened his eyesight.

Cook, one of the leading riders on the northern National Hunt circuit, initially required 60 stitches in his face after the incident at Market Rasen in October.

He did return to action in November, but had a fall from one of his favourite horses, Definitly Red, in the Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle and gave up his rides the following day. Cook has not ridden since.

“I tired to give it as much time as I could, but it’s been going on a year now and it just isn’t getting any better,” said Cook.

“I’ve had to face reality and base the decision on going forward.

“The problem arises when I bend over and tilt my head back. When I rotate my eye to go horizontal, I just lose vision and can’t see.”

Regarding the immediate future, Cook is set to join up with his family in the landscaping business – but he hopes to return to the racing industry at some stage.

“My family are all landscape gardeners so I’ll probably go into that for a bit just to get some money in,” said Cook, 38.

“I would like to get back into racing, but at the moment there’s a bit more money in the landscaping game just to tide me over until I get sorted.”


Cook had some memorable days in the saddle, including a Cheltenham Festival win on Great Endeavour. But one stands out above others.

“I’d have to say my favourite was winning the Cotswold Chase at Cheltenham on Definitly Red. That was the best one for me,” said Cook.

“I got some great support when I moved up north, Brian Ellison stuck by me and then I built up a great relationship with Sue Smith.

“Things were all going well and my best years were probably still to come, so it’s a shame the injury came when it did.”

Jack Kennedy, Robbie Power and Rachael Blackmore, here's hoping you're back soon as well.
 
Still not convinced that Davy should be coming back to be honest the man has taken so much punishment, there is only so much the body can take.
